Classes Begin
Well, our first week of classes consisted of “Dobu” (our Culture & Language learning class) and Phonemics. Phonemics is where we take an unwritten language and put an alphabet to it so that we can use this as a foundation for literacy. This includes trying to use characters that are used in their trade language so if they ever go out and learn to read the trade language, it won’t be too difficult. This class built off of our Phonetics class from last semester. In this class we begin with a phonetic alphabet that uses distinct characters for each sound, then we “crunch” it into the phonemic alphabet that will be used for literacy (their actual alphabet).
Some of the classes are done in small groups

and others are with our entire class (about 45).
