Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. Benjamin Franklin
Even though we are now done with our training, one of the lessons we learned during classes is that we will be continuous learners. Of course this seems obvious for most people, but I guess it is a good reminder for us as we just finished “studying” for the past years. It is easy to fall into the habit to think that we have arrived and do not have knowledge to acquire no more. One thing is certain: God is not done with us and He is continually teaching us like a father.

Our life will be a never ending process of transformation. With only a few weeks done with schooling, we are able to see how much is yet to be learned.
So, here are four essentials a learner needs to acquire:
- Humility: Always willing to learn from others, from the circumstances of life that God allowed us to go through. Having the attitude that we can continue to learn even when we are expert at something. The willingness to let God bring us closer to the image of Jesus. Not thinking we have it together because of the immense knowledge that we have acquired.
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29
- Patience: Beside the marvelous blink-of-an-eye metamorphosis that God does in one heart, everything about learning takes time. For some, it takes longer than others, and it depends of which subject it is. But we have to be willing to endure the long wait sometimes hardship that some concepts of life take to be understood. One step at a time!
- Curiosity: Asking questions is a good way to learn. The wisdom of God and the counsel of others are excellent input to have. When we do not understand something making searches allowed us to gain more information. The Bible is a great library to gain knowledge and wisdom – be curious to look into the mind of God.
- Teachable: Having knowledge just to have knowledge is a danger in itself. In other to be able to excel more and more, we have to be willing to apply the truth we have acquired to our own life. The step does not need to be enormous but the progression has to be forward. Our heart has to be willing to receive instructions from God and wise people.
This is just a quick list but…
Do you know of other essentials to be a learner?
