Translation Team at the Yagaria NT Dedication 2007

The Yagaria believers are passionate about getting God’s message to those who’ve not yet heard or understood it, because God has used His message to change their lives, and they want to share the blessings they’re enjoying, with others.

To facilitate this, the church leaders have planned to teach two courses in the capitol city, with representatives from 16 of the Yagaria churches. The first course is to build up God’s people and equip them to do God’s work; and the second course is to share the Good News about Jesus Christ with those who have not yet understood that Jesus died for them, or why

Sept 1 Update

We now believe that the Maleu people who were missing at sea since July 13 have died. I emailed Matt and Angie Hall, and Aaron Weatherl, for an update and what follows is their reply to me.  Aaron’s reply includes a note from Maleu elder, Kewaka. which was written in Tok Pisin, the trade language of PNG. I have translated it into English for you.

What does it take to reach tribal people with the gospel?  On July 5, the missionaries in the Siar tribe began teaching the Creation to Christ lessons to the Siar people. What are some of the things that they have done do arrive at this place?  It was over 10 years ago that the missionaries started their missionary training. After 4 years of training, they spent 1 year raising financial and prayer support.

God at work through NTM in Papua New Guinea

We are excited about what the Lord is doing through New Tribes Mission in Papua New Guinea.  Missionaries are working in forty different tribes.  Nine of these tribes first heard the gospel from 1975 to 1999.  Twenty-four of these tribes heard the gospel from 2001 through 2011, and one more tribe is due to hear it later this year for a total of 25 tribes in 11 years.  Missionaries have moved into the other 6 tribes more recently, and are working on learning their culture and language.  They plan to begin teaching sometime between 2012 and 2015.

Bible Seminar in September – July 2011

I recently received an email from my friend Tama – a member of the Yagaria tribe.  Tama came to know the Lord while attending the Bible Class I taught at Bena High School. After high school he worked for my dad, who discipled him, and later on, I mentored him when he came to work in the NTM office.

Many Yagarians have moved to the capitol city of Port Moresby, so the Yagarian elders started a church there. The elders of the church in the capitol, along with the elders of the churches in Tama’s home area are planning a Bible seminar in capitol city in September, and have asked him and another man to be co-chairmen.  Please pray for the Yagarian elders as they prepare for the meetings, and for finances and safety for those who will be traveling to the event. Pray that those who attend will apply God’s truth to their lives.

Travel Plans – June 2011

Asia-Pacific by apwriters.org

Lately we have been looking into purchasing our airline tickets so that we can return to our ministries in Papua New Guinea.  I will be returning to the Office, and Gay will be returning to the Numonohi Christian Academy.

Our current plan is to depart from the States Dec 28, and to arrive in PNG the first week in January.  There are a number of different ways to go to PNG, (none of them very direct) and the most direct route is not always the least expensive.  At times it’s been just as cheap to go by way of New Zealand so we’ve been looking into going that way, so that we could spend time with our New Zealand friends who served with us as missionaries in PNG.  This time however, it looks like it will be more expensive to go via New Zealand, so we will probably go through Hong Kong.  Thanks for praying with us about this.

What Is NTM Communications All About – Apr 2011

For the past few years I’ve been working with New Tribes Mission Communications, as Photo Editor. My job entailed finding and editing photos for the NTM website, and also collecting photos from our missionaries’ emails. We put these photos online, so that they’re available for use by all of our members to help tell the story of what God is doing around the world through the various ministries of NTM.

PNG_INB_Akolet_2011-04-16-42_Liklikme wife of Sapu_Martin N 336-448One of our recent news items was that the Akolet people heard the gospel for the first time. Adam and Julie Martin started teaching the Chronological lessons (Creation to Christ) in January, and culminated in April.  One of the key quotes was by a woman named Liklikme, who said, “All along (in my life) I’ve tried and tried and tried so hard.  But there wasn’t anything I could do!  But now you’ve explained to me that it’s Jesus’ work on the cross.  I believe that!  I feel so happy! I’ve always felt this weight, like in my stomach, and now it’s gone and I feel light and fresh and free!” For more:  http://usa.ntm.org/field-news/akolets-testify-to-gods-saving-grace

Gay’s Future Ministry at the MK School – Dec 2010

Gay teaching English class.

Gay teaching English class.

Several months ago the Papua New Guinea branch of New Tribes Mission asked me to return to a full time position in the office which handles matters  for all of the missionaries and departments of New Tribes Mission in PNG.  We figured that Gay would either assist me, or work at our school for missionary children (NCA), but did not have anything specific lined up.

We recently received another email asking Gay to teach 7th and 8th grade English as well as the typing/keyboarding class at NCA, which she has happily agreed to do for the 2011-2012 school year. (We have since delayed our departure until the end of December 2011)

Cherie Is With The Lord – June 2010

My beloved sister Cherie

My beloved sister Cherie Ramos

Thank-you so much for your regular support of our ministry financially, by praying and by words of encouragement.  I’m glad to have this opportunity to share with you some of the things that the Lord has been doing in and through our lives.

On May 9th I flew from Portland to Birmingham to be with my youngest sister Cherie, who was born April 3rd 1964, who had been fighting cancer.  I had asked her a couple weeks earlier how long the doctors thought she would live, but at that time she told me that they never really talked about that.  Cherie had been admitted to the hospital on May 2nd, and on the 4th my parents had traveled up from Florida, and through them I learned that Cherie’s cancer was terminal.  When I arrived, Cherie recognized me, and said, “Hi Steve.” but that was the extent of our communication.  I was glad to be there for the end of her life, and also to be with the rest of the family at that time.

Josh Gay Tim Steve Nate

We’ve got some good news to share with you.  Last week we received the following message from the Papua New Guinea branch of New Tribes Mission

“We would like you to return to a full time position in our office.  The two main responsibilities would be 1) Office Manager, that is, overseeing the citizen employees and 2) Human Resources Manager.  The two responsibilities go hand in hand.

We have checked with (the NTM US Communications Department) and you can see that you are very welcome to stay in the communications area with NTM USA.  However, you are very needed here as well.  We have lost a lot of experienced people lately, some to going finish and some to other ministries.  Honestly, your history with PNG and cultural understanding would play a significant part in your responsibilities in the office.”
