Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

Living here in Guinea, Christmas could really come and go and you wouldn’t really notice.  There are no lights on houses, no TV specials, no stores full of gift giving ideas, no signs of Christmas anywhere.  It can be difficult to think of all the traditions happening without us back home.  It can be difficult to read how everyone is celebrating the season…BUT, there are also great things about having Christmas over here.  It’s much easier to focus on the real meaning of Christmas when you take away all the hype and commercialism.  There was no mention of Santa Claus at all.

We read from the book of Luke several times and talked about how amazing it was that God would choose to send His Son as a baby in a manger.  Luke 2:10-11, “Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all the people.  For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

When we read that I asked the boys why is it good tidings with great joy?  They knew it was because Jesus would save us all from our sins.  Then we started talking about all the people in our village.  I asked if their religion is full of good tidings and great joy?  They knew too that it is not.  All the people around us are just trying to do enough good things to make up for the bad things in the hope that their god will let them into paradise.  That can’t bring joy to a soul.  I just kept reading that passage and thinking how much I long for my friends and neighbors to know true joy.  To no longer strive to be good enough, but to rest in the fact that God already did everything for them.

Of course, with three boys, we did celebrate Christmas with a few traditions.  We made Christmas cookies (even as our frosting was melting :) And we sang Christmas carols and had some presents for them.  We asked our guard to give us a few hours as a family on Christmas morning without people needing us.  They think it is so incredibly odd that we would want to be alone for ANY reason!

We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day visiting with our friends and family in the village – giving out gifts and offering our holiday greetings.  It’s a bit hard for them to offer those greetings back to us since it is rejoicing in the birth of Jesus, but we appreciate their efforts.  It was such a wonderful time giving gifts to others.  I had a great time of choosing clothes, toys, and candies for each family.  Our boys loved being a part of it and helping kids with their gifts.  I love that we could share our holiday with our friends this way.  I love that we can bring some of our world into theirs and let them know how much we care about them.  I have tons of pictures, but here are some of my favorites…

Our family at our Christmas dinner during conference

Our family at our Christmas dinner during conference

School is out for a few weeks…I’ve been looking forward to this little break from the busy routine.  It’s nice to have time to visit with the people coming to the house because I’m not trying to teach the kids at the same time.  Although, now that they know I’m on a break, it seems that EVERYONE needs to come and ask me something.  I had big plans that I was going to make the kids do more schoolwork during this break so it all stayed “fresh” in their minds, but it just isn’t happening – not that the boys mind too much!

We had our annual field conference all last week.  A guest speaker and his family came over from the States to encourage us during morning meetings.  It was nice to hear a hear someone new share things from a new perspective.  It was a very full week of meetings and events, but our kids loved the non-stop action of being with their friends.  Here’s a few photos from the week…

I had been planning this photo session for months – I was so thrilled to get my whole family together for these pictures.  They all thought I was a little crazy that I wanted them to get out there in the snow, but the pictures turned out so great!

Santa even makes house calls

Santa even makes house calls

This was a big holiday season for us!  I tried to pack in as much holiday events as I could.  I wanted to make this a very special Christmas for the boys after being away for the past two.  I was so thankful that all my siblings were able to come home for at least a few days.  The boys were able to get lots of attention from their aunts and uncles.

Here’s some photos of our very special Christmas…

A night of singing and dancing

I absolutely loved watching our boys perform in their school Christmas program the other night.  They had been practicing for months and they did such a great job.  The program was about following Santa around the earth and the ways that other countries celebrate Christmas.  It meant a lot to me that my family could be there to see the boys perform too.

Even though Malachi had spent weeks trying to get me to say that he didn’t have to be a part of it – he was up there singing and dancing his heart out with a huge grin on his face the whole time!

Micah’s class was singing Christmas songs from Africa and he played his African drum with the class.  Then at the end he did a little drum solo in front of everyone.  He is so much braver than I am!  He was so worried about messing up, but we kept telling him that no one else knows how to play the drum so he would be fine.

Ephraim was so excited that he got to be the Santa for his class.  He talked of nothing else but that suit for two weeks.  He couldn’t wait to get it on.  He practiced his song every day – over and over again!

I love that they got to have this experience!  They had so much fun!

We were able to have a great time celebrating Micah’s birthday!  Hard to believe that I am the mother of a nine year old!

Awesome friends, the Latka’s, hosted a party for Micah’s birthday and it was the perfect day for a pool party.  We had to drag them out of the water at the end of the day.  Friends and family joined us for a day filled with swimming, great food and fellowship.  The boys absolutely loved every minute of it.  Micah and Malachi have been asking for skateboards since we got home and so they were thrilled to both get a skateboard – with lots of pads and helmets thanks to a very nervous Gramma!  They were spoiled with lots of other fun gifts too.  It was just a really great day!

Yeah for a skateboard!

Celebrating Steve's birthday with the Bryants

Celebrating Steve's birthday with the Bryants

Our boys have loved to joke about the fact that I am SO much older than Steve.  To them that four month difference has seemed like a lifetime and they love to remind me that I’m the oldest one in our family.  Thankfully, Steve’s birthday has come and now we can be the “same number” as Ephraim says.
Our trip to Conakry was in part celebrating Steve’s birthday and the splurges of eating out was a treat we don’t get very often.  Our friends, the Bryants, wanted to celebrate the day with our family and so the morning after we got home we headed out to their village.  We had a really relaxing time and spent the afternoon chatting and catching up on life.  Ginny made a great dinner for all of us and then brought out a delicious chocoate cake.  Even with severely limited ingredients it was wonderful and we so appreciate the gift of friends who would do so much for us.  The kids and I brought Steve pancakes in bed on the morning of his birthday.  Not sure if 3 excited boys jumping on you is the best way to start your birthday, but they were pretty excited to give him the cards that they had made him.  He had his birthday request meal for lunch, we celebrated with another chocolate cake in the evening and hopefully made the day a special one for Steve.  I know what he’d really love is a trip through Home Depot for his birthday, but just a few more months and he can go there everyday!

New Years Eve

Moustapha with some of holiday gifts The coming of the New Year is a big deal no matter where you live – even if it’s a small village in Guinea!  All our friends here had been telling us their big plans for special meals, new outfits and visiting with family.  For us, we spent the afternoon with our co-workers – snacking, visiting and playing a few games.  In the evening we headed into the village to visit friends and give some gifts.  They don’t celebrate Christmas with gifts as we do, but New Years is a different story.  I had picked up several little gifts for all the children of “our family” in the village.  It was so great to see our boys so excited to give gifts away and it was equally great to see the faces of the kids as they received their small gifts. Bringing in the New Year!

Enjoying New Years EveOur friends told us that only Christians celebrate on the 24th and 25th, but that everyone else here celebrates on the 31st. So, we decided to have friends over for New Years Eve to take a moment to let them know that they are special to us. We made a big dinner for everyone and knowing how much can be piled on a plate over here – we made A LOT of spaghetti. I forgot that there are still a lot of people who aren’t used to using silverware! It was an interesting dinner and I just sat back and thought how different this New Years Eve is from one that we would be having in the States. (more…)
