At the rivers edge

Getting ready to take the plunge

Getting ready to take the plunge

A few weeks ago we were able to be a part of something really great.  The local church in town had 15 people who were ready to be baptized.  This is a very big deal in Guinea.  I know, it’s a big deal everywhere – but here, being so public about your life puts you at great risk and can have severe consequences.  For most of us, we’re familiar with baptisms within the safety of our own church walls.  Here, it’s a trip to the river and you stand before everyone and tell them that you’ve put your faith in Christ.  Not an easy thing to do in a country like this.  And we sure made a lot of noise as we went in a caravan of vehicles from the church to the river.  In pure Guinea style, all the teens packed into the back of pick-up trucks and sang, clapped and yes, even danced as we drove down the road.  Everyone gathered at the rivers edge as the pastor shared from the Bible and prayed for each one being baptized.  Micah’s drum teacher, Samuel, was the first one to go and had asked us to take lots of pictures.  Each one came into the water, shared a brief testimony (which was being translated into a few languages for everyone else) and then they were baptized.  Every one on shore sang, clapped and ran to hug each one as they came out of the water.  It was a really great thing to be a part of.  Sometimes I get bogged down in the thoughts of how things aren’t moving fast enough, but then there these moments that remind me that God is in control and at work here…even when it’s not on in our time frame!

Thanksgiving…

Malachi with Uncle Matt

Malachi with Uncle Matt

We spent Thanksgiving at our church helping with the free meal for the community.  Well, actually, we spent most of the time keeping our boys entertained while my parents helped with things.  Thankfully, we had Uncle Matt to help keep them occupied.  Then we headed to the home of some dear friends for some fun and more food.  Our boys were thrilled to be able to watch the football game on TV and an even bigger highlight that was Mr Greg and Miss Cindy had a hot tub off their bedroom.  What better way to spend Thanksgiving than in a hot tub!

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!

A few weeks ago we sent out an email update asking our team to be praying with us about our return to Guinea.  We asked for prayer for the funds needed for a vehicle and to see a dramatic increase in our monthly support.  We feel privileged to be able to go to our team and ask for their prayers knowing that they will be speaking to God on our behalf.

It’s also a privilege to be able to write them all again and have them rejoice with us over seeing God at work.  Since we wrote to them a few weeks ago and asked for their prayers we have seen some great things happening.  First we received the amazing news that one of our supporters was donating $15,000 for a vehicle.  You can imagine how overwhelmed we were!  It’s a blessing beyond belief and we pray that this vehicle will be a blessing for those in our village as well.  Steve has been looking into the best choice for us and we’re hoping to find something here and ship it over before we leave.

We have also received another large gift towards our one time needs.  We’ve been able to pay off our return flights and are now able to start setting aside funds for all the things we need to purchase before we go back.

We’ve also seen a few new supporters come on board this month!  It’s exciting to see people getting excited about what we’re doing and wanting to be a part of it!  Keep praying for an increase in our monthly support!  We so appreciate all the prayers!

Soccer Match

The pre-game lineup for prayer

The pre-game lineup for prayer

The youth from the church in town asked if they could get a soccer game going with the missionary kids we have scattered around the area.  We thought it was an awesome idea and another way to try and bridge that cultural gap for our kids.  So, we hosted a big game here on the mission center and invited all the kids from the church to come on out.  We were told to expect about 30 people to come and play – which would already quite outnumber our 15 missionary kids that we had come from the different villages that their families are working in.  However, when drivers arrived at the church to pick up the kids – there was more like 60 of them all eager and ready to come – along with lots of adults who wanted in on the action. Thankfully, lots of ladies helped me make cookies and refreshments to feed all those hungry athletes!  It was really exciting for me – what an amazing opportunity for our kids to build friendships, for us to show the love of Christ in a simple way, and for us to be a testimony as believers.

Micah and his drum

Micah with his drum

Micah with his drum

I’m an introvert.  I’m one of those people who would prefer just about anything to walking into a room of a people I don’t know.  It takes a long time before I feel comfortable around people.  So, to see Micah walk BY HIMSELF up to the front of our church on Sunday mornings carrying his drum to play, I get a little choked up.  It’s something that I would absolutely be terrified to do.  But, here’s my 8 year old lugging that big heavy drum in front of everyone because he LOVES it with a passion.  It doesn’t matter that he can’t understand 90% of what’s being sung – he just plays his heart out right beside his drum teacher.  I’m so proud of him.

Keeping Ephraim entertained

Ephraim and his camera

Ephraim and his camera

I have had to become creative to keep Ephraim entertained during our very long church services.  No matter how many “activities” I plan to keep him busy – he usually goes through them all in a matter of minutes.  His backpack just isn’t big enough to bring all the things he plays with in the course of a morning.  But, one thing that does seem to hold his attention pretty well is the camera.  He loves to walk around shooting photos of just about everyone and everything.  Thankfully, we live in a place where getting your picture taken is the highlight of the month, so no one gets offended when there’s a five year old with a camera in their face.  Now, I think it’s actually become a challenge for him to see if he can get a photograph of everyone at church.

Being willing to be the chauffeur opens the door for better relationships

Twice a week Steve has the opportunity to drive the young believers from our church here to the mission center where they study about evangelism and have some great discussions. It’s been really encouraging for him to see these new Christians asking tough questions and really thinking through how they can reach the people around them. (more…)
