Police, a dead pig and a growing family

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Monday, April 16th, 2012

Eph 2:19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family.

In general PNG culture and particularly the Mengen culture family ties are very important. If you are in a good family, you will gain a good name, you will always receive help in times of trouble; if your gardens fail, if your children need a babysitter, if you get in a fight, if you are making a garden or building a house, if you need to borrow tools, if your are short on money for school fees, your family will help you out, they’ve got your back. Now if you behave badly or step out of line, your family will threaten to remove all of that help and will turn their back on you in order to force you back into line.

These family pressures have been wearing hard on some of our believing families; we believe the story of the, “police, a dead and a growing family” have helped the family of God in our Mengen village to come together like never before. (more…)

Translation workshop and more…

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Thursday, January 26th, 2012

A year and a half living amongst the Mengen people, about 520 days of language and culture study, ten days of a translation workshop at our support center and I have been able to translate the first chapter of the book of Ruth. These are exciting and encouraging day and I thank God for allowing me to be able to go and complete the translation workshop. We take eight steps to ensure that our translations communicate the original meaning of the source text whilst striving to stay true to the word of God.

Some work I have on my plate as we return to the bush is to translate some literacy materials into Mengen and then the rest of the book of Ruth. (more…)

Pray for Masta and family

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

P1020400Hi,

This second week we would like to ask you to pray for Masta and Lilpage. They are both very involved in the Kevung cult that is strong in our area. However recently Masta has been coming to literacy class and doing very well, even though he got much family pressure not to come; he has relished learning to read and right and is a smart guy, he can now read and right well.  His wife Lilpage not supportive but pray that the Lord would save her also, they have 1 boy who is older but we dont know him as he is very shy – pray for him also. Masta has started to come to Sunday meeting, but we are sure these make little sense to him as they are in Romans and he doesn’t understand the truths of the gospel yet. Masta has been asking lots of questions recently and is seeing that the path he is on is not the true one. He is seeking for the truth; pray he and his wife will find the truth in Christ when we start our new phase 1 (gospel presentation) in Aug of this year.

Thanks for your prayers for the lost and the church amongst the Mengen people!

Because of our Savior,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

Nya & Noah update

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Hi praying friends,

Both kids are now doing fine and are over their virus! Thanks so much for praying.

Nya is still ill with fever and just not being herself. She vomited a bit tonight but is sleeping better. More and more it is looking like some type of virus that is also upseting her tummy. Noah is also unsettled with a slight fever and has been up quite often at night not giving us much sleep. Simon leaves tomorrow for Mengen to start the first stage of building. They guys will be preparing the ground and cementing the posts for the house; they hope to put on the bearers and continue prep work.
Pray the kids will get better soon and energy for Annika as she looks after them whilst Simon is gone bush. Please pray for safety for Simon and the other two guys as they travel and work.

Thanks for your prayers,

Simon, Annika, Nya and Noah

work trip, Mengen news and more…

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Hi Friends,

It’s been a busy period of time for us as a family; Nya is potty training, Noah is on his third tooth we have had a bush trip, and we are Laureti's house before..packing in preparation for our move to live amongst the Mengen people.

As you know I flew into our work a few weeks ago to renovate the Laureti’s into a smaller house; the purpose of this was to get us some materials to kick start our  house off and save us some money so we could move in quicker. You can see the picture (more…)

Getting bigger

Getting bigger

Christmas, days of wonder, days of snow, eating good food, family, presents, laughter and maybe superman 3 in the afternoon, if you can stay awake long enough to make it through. Well Christmas this year wasn’t particularly that kind of Christmas for the Flanagan family. (more…)

Safe in Tokyo but need your prayers

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Friday, December 18th, 2009

Hi all, we have had a pretty good flight and had answers to prayer already. We got out on an earlier than expected flight from Dublin to London, which meant we missed the snow and delays! If our flight had been delayed and a missed connection had happened in London we would have been paying for all our tickets from there on. God is good. Quick sorry security have told us the place the planes fly out of closes in 5 mins and we have to go; strange rules in Tokyo! We need your prayer for flights from Port Moresby, there are two day back-ups there of over 400 people as one of the Volcanoes is erupting on our Island and stoping flights. Please pray that we can get through to our flight and that if we dont we can get the airline to pay for a hotel for us as they are so expensive in the Capital city. We would also not like to be stuck in Port Moresby as it is quite a dangerous city and we would like to be settled for Christmas day as a family. The kids are good and have slept reasonably well. Thanks for your prayers we must run. Sorry for any spelling mistakes this is very quick and we must run! Love in Christ. The Flanagan’s

leaving on a jet plane

Posted by Simon and Annika Flanagan on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Hi friends, thanks so much for praying for us! It’s getting late now on Wednesday night, the packing is done, kids and the wife are all in bed. Please forgive any garbled language or spelling mistakes as I’m pretty tired. Tired but very content; content in the Lord which feels great. Content even though we are fearful, knowing that tomorrows 03:30 departure for PNG will bring (more…)
