Sharon and I are breathing a sigh of relief this week as our second set of intensive language evaluations drew to a close yesterday. Virtually all we’ve done for the past two weeks since Sharon’s family left was prepare for the evaluation by doubling our language sessions, spending hours reviewing and answering in-depth culture questions that our consultant reviewed before our language check.
It’s good news. We’re both on track to achieve our goal of reaching a “highly capable” language level by the end of our second year of study (a year from now). We feel grateful to our consultant for conducting a thorough check and spending days processing the raw data we’ve provided her into a set of recommendations to help streamline our study time. I can’t imagine doing this alone.
You can help by praying for us as we study this difficult language and learn more about this complex culture. (more…)

Every day my knee feels stronger and the joint gets tighter as my quad muscles learn how to do their job again. Unfortunately we’re not out of the woods yet on this one though. I’ve got a mix of good and bad news for you and I could still use your prayers for a full recovery so I can use my knees to build closer relationships with guys who play soccer every day near our house.
Since my ACL/meniscus repair surgery in October last year we’ve kept a membership at a local gym and Sharon and I work out (more…)

We thought it may be helpful to provide you with a short paragraph updating you about our financial situation here in Thailand. As has always been the case, we rely on donations from you, our partners in this work, to continue ministering and serving here in Thailand.
After ten months of partnership development in the US we arrived here in Thailand with more than enough to cover our initial moving expenses and to keep us going here. Over fifty individuals, churches and foundations have chosen to support this ministry through regular monthly giving totaling 74% of our NTM recommended support level. Fortunately many generous people have chosen to give special gifts to our ministry allowing us to continue the work God has called us to here. Our one ongoing need from our partnership development time is money for a car. So far we’ve received $3,000 dollars for this $10,000 project. If you’d like to be a part of the team providing for this need financially please visit our give page here. God bless and thank-you.

You know that feeling you get the first day you’re out exercising? You’re like, “Oh man I’ve totally got this.”
Then the second day you’re like, “Man that was hard but now I feel good.”
Then the third day you want to die. Today I went to my third day of physical therapy. I’m starting to feel the burn but it’s awesome to see big gains in just the first few days. I’ve pretty much regained full mobility in my knee through squats, leg press exercises and biking. The therapist is really excited about my progress and has told me to start doing the therapy at home or in a gym closer to where we live. It will be nice to have that extra hour or two every day. We’ll update again on Monday after my next appointment with the Doctor. Thanks for praying!

The biggest update on my knee is that tomorrow evening I will see the doctor for the first time since surgery. It feels fine although the regular post-surgical nuisances apply: atrophy of the muscles in my leg, bruising, soreness, numbness, etc. I am anticipating the doctor will remove my stitches tomorrow and get me on a therapy regimen at the hospital where the operation took place. We will update again with more details tomorrow night. In the meantime if you enjoy pictures of gross, atrophied knees or are curious about how it looks check out the pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/ricandsharon/ChangingTheBandages#

We received word from our field leadership at 3:30 AM this morning that our “authorization letters” have arrived from Bangkok. Now we’re playing another waiting game for a little number- called a telex number- that we’re praying will arrive early next week. We will keep you posted. Our visas really haven’t “arrived” until that number comes in and we take the next step – a trip to Chicago.
After the final piece of paperwork comes in we’ll take a road trip to the embassy in Chicago and spend the night while they process our paperwork and stamp our passports. We will THEN buy tickets. Quite a process! We appreciate your prayers that nothing will go wrong with this final step and that we’ll have a departure date soon.

It’s amazing how God works. Our May update included a list of special gifts that would be a blessing as we move to Thailand this fall. One important item was a work computer to house our many recordings, pictures, and video we’ll be taking during language learning.
A great friend and supporter answered the call giving us her old computer, a docking station, and a wonderful laptop case. The computer is a Dell Latitude D610 with a 1.88 Ghz processor, 1 Gb of RAM, an 80 Gb hard drive and the very latest Windows and Office suite installed on it. For those who don’t speak computer: it’s a great work horse. We’ll use it until it falls apart.

Life has been hectic here. The day after we got back to Michigan was my sister’s graduation, then over memorial day weekend we roofed my parent’s house. This past week I have been working down in Jackson and Sharon has been working on getting us settled into our new home. Look for new updates at our blog and here on our website soon! -Ric
