This year marks the worst flooding Thailand has experienced since 1942. Though our yard flooded for a few days we actually got off a lot easier than many people in Thailand who lost businesses, vehicles, homes, and even loved ones. Please pray for Thailand and for the ongoing flooding in Bangkok and the surrounding areas and check www.bangkokpost.com for more details. We are praying this will be an opportunity for God’s church in Thailand to rise to the occasion and make a real difference in people’s lives. Through this difficult time we hope to continue deepening our existing friendships and model lives of faith.

Tribal missions
Sharon and I are reaching unreached tribes with the gospel!
Actually we’ve learned that ministry is all about is relationships. We’ve been humbled by the welcome our Thai friends have given us. The time we spend with our friends here in the culture has continued to increase as our language ability increases and our level of comfort grows. Please continue to pray these relationships would continue to grow and blossom. They are not only crucial for an understanding of language and culture they will be the foundation of our work for years to come.

This week is one of refreshment, encouragement and strategic planning with other members of our organization serving in this region. We’re thankful for this time, these friends and the clarity the first few days have given us so far. This marks the first week since our arrival that we’ve taken done virtually no language and culture study. Instead our days consist of hearing ministry reports from our various tribal teams, business meetings, praying for Thailand and encouraging our fellow workers. Pray this week will be profitable, encouraging, fun and safe. Thanks!

A vehicle we're borrowing.
During this first year in Thailand we’ve been using public transportation and a scooter to get around. That’s been working out well with one big catch: it’s not very safe. We didn’t really realize just how unsafe the motorcycle was until we borrowed the truck in the picture above for a few months. The owners are fellow missionaries currently on “home assignment” in the US. To buy a good, used vehicle like the one above will cost around $10,000 US dollars.
Please be praying with us about this need. When we first arrived in Thailand we had 3,100 dollars in our “vehicle fund.” We spent the majority of this on the scooter and we currently have $1,200 to put toward a car. Our leadership team in the US has agreed with us that this is a need and is praying with us that we will be able to raise the rest of the funds before the end of September. Please visit our Give Page to see more information on how you can help with this special project. Thanks!

Friday afternoon we napped on and off during the bus ride back to Chiang Mai. It had been a long week and we were looking forward to getting back home and sleeping in our own bed. A slow drizzle soaked the road and sheets of lightning over the mountains provided occasional glimpses of the winding road ahead. I jerked my head up when the screams started and saw two dim objects lying in the road a few hundred yards ahead. The brakes slammed and we flew forward but it seemed to make no difference on our speed. As we skidded along the wet road in the dark the bus’s back end began to swing slowly around to the left. A split second later we hit something. Or maybe a couple things. Hard. (more…)

Several friends in the past year have mentioned they sponsored or are currently sponsoring a child through Compassion International in Thailand. We don’t know all 32,700 children Compassion sponsors are involved in helping but we’ve met a few dozen at least. Yesterday we went to a graduation ceremony for an elite group of Compassion kids: those that went through the grueling five year Leadership Development Program for college students. Pictures (more…)

Most weekends we go out with our friends from church. Primary activities include: visiting sick people in the hospital, going to weddings, spending six hours praying, boiling eggs at hot springs, going to a revival or riding a hot bus for hours and hours. Not exactly the way we would have spent our weekends back home.
Here’s what we’re learning though: it doesn’t really matter what you’re doing. The most important thing is that you’re doing it together with friends. That’s certainly a strong value we’ve observed playing itself out over and over again in the six months since we’ve been here. Embedded on our website are some pictures from this weekend illustrating my point: (more…)

Michigan, here we come. We leave in six hours and will drive for 18 hours through snow, ice, and maybe even some rain. Please pray for us as we finish the final leg of our trip! We can’t wait to be in one place for a while after our massive trips lately.
