We’ve spent the last two Thanksgiving days in Arizona with Ric’s grandparents. This year we knew we’d be on our own and we expected to eat burgers instead of turkey with our friends Kevin and Emily. If we couldn’t have turkey we’d at least enjoy American food.
At least that’s what we thought. When we walked into the burger joint Thanksgiving night we were told by the owner they were only serving Thanksgiving dinner. He asked if we’d made reservations. We said no. Fortunately just as we came a table cleared and the owner was able to seat us for the all you can eat turkey and ham dinner. Amazing.

Here are a few pictures of a church barbecue we went to tonight. Quite delicious! Here we eat pretty much every piece of the cow so if you think you’re seeing a cut of meat you wouldn’t get at the grocery store back home you’re probably right. Check out all the pictures here. These are just samples:

What is this mess of wires? Well, that’s our new home phone from Vonage! Some of you may have heard of this service and some haven’t.
It’s great: Free calls. To Thailand. To us. From you. OR Free calls. From Thailand. From us. To you.
It will be a great way to keep in touch, share our lives and keep you involved. The best part: It will be Ric’s cell phone number. Just keep it in your cell phone or address book and call us when you get the urge to hear our voices. Keep in mind that Thailand is exactly 12 hours from Eastern Standard time most of the year and that we won’t be answering during the middle of the night. Leave us a voice mail anytime, however, and we’ll be happy to call you back.
If you need our number send us an email at ricandsharon@gmail.com

Well, Ric’s joined the club… the four eyes club. He’s always been on the edge but finally took the plunge last week after an eye exam. The doctor took him outside in his prescription and Ric was sold. Since he’s been wearing them his headaches have disappeared and he doesn’t need to strain to see distant things. Thought you’d enjoy a picture of him with his new equipment. -Sharon

While this isn’t near as funny as other videos we’ve watched after surgery if you know Ric there’s definitely something different about how he’s processing things and he takes a long time answering most of the questions. Check it out:

Here’s a photo we snapped this morning at beautiful Higgins Lake, Michigan. We spent the weekend relaxing with good friends, eating amazing food, and roasting marshmallows over our campfire. I really enjoyed exploring the lake. As you can see, the water is crystal clear so swimming was a lot of fun! We also enjoyed kayaking, walking, and flying styrofoam airplanes. We’ll post video on facebook.

For my birthday I got a new video camera. Thought we’d throw a test video up of what we did today. May not seem extraordinary but whatever. You should see more updates like this one periodically with our new Flip camera.

This past weekend Sharon enjoyed a girl’s getaway weekend with my sister Sarah and several of her friends. Sarah is getting married this weekend to a very cool guy from Ohio so it was great to send her off in style. The ladies camped minutes from the lake and enjoyed running down the steep sand dunes, canoeing on the glassy lake, and tasting local cuisine. I’ve been trying to convince Sharon to write an article about her experience and fill you in on the details. If you’d like her to say so in the comments.

Sharon had a great 5 kilometer race today even though it rained a bit before and after the race. It was a great almost spring day in Michigan 35 degrees, wet and cloudy. She came in 22nd in her age group out of 97. A total of 1500 people ran in the event.

Last night we went to the beach to celebrate Sharon finishing her Cherokee analysis. It was great to walk along the boardwalk, splash in the waves, and feel free at last. Here are some pictures:

Sharon is done with her paper!
On the road finding internet is always a problem and when we do get it we snatch every precious second of it we can get. I’m in the process of adding pictures to our online albums, checking our email, updating our website, downloading important files and updates for my computer, and managing our contact lists from the churches we’ve visited. The most important thing I’m doing, though, is sending Sharons paper off to the grader’s. Here’s how it came in:
Pages: 115
Hours: 100+
Sharon is SOOO happy to be done. Now we party. We’re going to the beach and then shopping. Wednesday we will go to the aquarium here in town.

Sharon made some delicious indian tacos on Saturday with her language helper (Bobbie) and some of her friends who are also in the linguistics course. The time Sharon has spent with the Cherokee friends she has met here in Tahlequah has been priceless, but we are ready to move on and be completely done studying. Sharon still has a lot of work to do! Breaks like this one are much-needed and well-deserved.

Sharon attended a Powwow on Saturday and had a great time watching the dances and seeing the costumes. She was able to try Indian Tacos and even some of the dance moves. Cherokee culture is rich and intricate, so Sharon went to the powwow to learn some important culture that will help her with her analysis of the language and understanding her language helper. I will be posting some video of the event tomorrow.

Seeing a professional baseball game is amazing on any day, but today was exceptional. The tickets were gifts from a missions-minded couple at our church, the weather was great, the Tigers won via a grand slam in the eighth inning, and I got some decent pictures. Thanks Ben and Jen!

On top of her incredible linguistics workload this semester, Sharon has spent hours training for a race. It all paid off as she crossed the finish line of her 10k (6.2 miles) in one hour, three minutes, and fifty seven seconds.
For her full race results, please visit this link and type Sharon Bruce in the appropriate boxes.
