Months of grueling training on the local hills had prepared Sharon for the worst the St. Louis course could throw at her. Reviews of the course spoke of big hills so she and the other girls readied themselves for it by running up and down steep Ozark hills.
As it turns out, their training was more than enough. They easily overcame inclines and downhills that daunted and even stopped other runners. Here is a picture of Sharon, Mel, and Neena at about the half mile mark.
The weather was perfect for a half-marathon. The day broke on clear skies and a beautiful view of the arch from the starting line. This is a picture at about half-way, near a water and Gatorade station.
Sharon said afterward that all the people on the course excited her, and she had a great race because she liked being among so many people. They only stopped once in the race, but tried to make it up the next mile.
After the race finding the girls in the throngs of runners was pretty tough. 13,000 people participated in the event. The girl’s final time was about 2 hours and 19 minutes. They had and excellent day!
