Further Training for Mission Agencies

Every year the personnel department from NTM travels to Virginia to get training for mission related business. There were many representatives of mission agencies and churches. It is a great time to share ideas on how to handle personnel issues. I was encouraged after talking with other candidate coaches and found that we all face the same issues. We found that we have similar processes for evaluating potential candidates. Another benefit for attending the seminars given was to learn how to better connect with the sending churches of our candidates. One pastor was particularly helpful by sending materials on how to best serve a missionary from selection all the way to retirement. They have a great program. If you are interested I have permission to send the manual to other interested pastors or missions leaders in your church.

How You Can Pray

  • Pray for wisdom in implementing some of the things learned in Virginia.
  • Pray for a refreshing time with family in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
  • Continue to pray for my brother Arnie, he is continuing to battle cancer. In talking with him today he understands that term better. The battle is between the cancer and the drugs and the body is the battleground. He is in quite a bit of pain.
  • In 2008 we put our retirement money into purchasing a house in northern Georgia. Our son is no longer in the house and we do not want to maintain this house from Florida. We discovered when we prepared to put the house on the market there was a “break in the chain” of title. This means that the paperwork from 3 owners ago has to be found and properly logged at the County to fix the break in chain of title.  Pray that this can be fixed in a timely manner. We would love to sell this house and put it back into our retirement account.

Foundational Teaching Training for National Church

Foundational Teaching Seminar

We received this update from Greg and Jim two of NTM’s missionaries in Papua New Guinea. It is so encouraging to hear of how the Word of God being taught is changing people’s lives in PNG. Each of you play a part of this kind of outreach around the world. I trust this gives you a better understanding of how teaching the Bible chronologically is helping the national church in Papua New Guinea.

“Pastors from 7 church denominations in the Eastern Islands gathered this week for 5 days of introduction to the Chronological Bible lessons we call “Planim Pos”.  Planim Pos is pidgin language for ‘setting house posts in the ground’.  It illustrates the objective of the 68 lesson series, to establish a clear understanding of the foundational truths of Christianity through a survey of the Old Testament and life of Christ.  Jim and I set aside the last hour on Friday for feedback, and this was their response:

Elder - This is going to change the way we teach.  I want to hear all of it.  We need to pick another time and study the rest of the lessons together.

Bible School Instructor – This foundational teaching is essential.  We need to hear all 68 lessons.

Elder – The chronological style helps me understand the Bible so much better.  I need this resource for my teaching and very much want to hear the rest of it.

Pastor – I love the depth and expository style – I want the rest.

Pastor – This pieces the Bible’s story together for me.  It’s changed me.  My daughter and I go home talking about it every day.

Women’s leader – I plan on taking this tool with me everywhere I travel.

Pastor, Chairman of Goroka Pastor’s fraternal– This is better than Bible school because it’s understandable to the layman and it’s targeted to our PNG culture.  Our spiritual maturity level shows poorly for the 100 years of having the gospel in PNG.  We are blown around by all kinds of new movements, but this is different.  This curriculum is different and can bring real help to our churches because it’s JUST GOD’S TALK: it doesn’t change or disappoint.  We pastors need to finish learning this so we can pass it on to our congregations.

Pastor, Secretary for Pastors Fraternal – This is better than my seminary experience because of its simple chronological approach.  Timing wise, I think the churches of PNG are ready for this.  Before you can “Planim Pos” you have to clear the ground, and I believe that PNG is a prepared place and it’s time for this tool to be used.

Jim and I are already committed for the rest of November, and the pastors get really busy in December, but early next year we hope to gather them again to finish the lessons.

These encouraging words make us realize just how important the national churches are in Papua New Guinea.

Personal Update

  • Please continue to pray for more students desiring to get cross-cultural training with NTM. We know that the economy is affecting how many students are coming. Many are delaying coming until the finances are in place to join the training.
  • Pray for us as we travel to Tennessee for the Christmas holiday. It will be fun to spend some time with Brock, Heidi & Ryley.
  • Pray for us as we work on the house in Flintstone, GA and get it ready to be sold.

The 1942 Pledge

The 1942 Pledge

Just over 70 years ago 3 men signed a pledge to each other that an organization called New Tribes Mission would work toward reaching the last evangelized tribe. This plaque is on the wall outside my office here in Sanford. I was reminded of “The Pledge” by a visiting missionary from Japan. He said I need to take a picture of that! It does embody the heart of what NTM does. This got me thinking about the people I work with and how I can challenge them to fulfill this pledge. I read an article (by Susan M. Heathfield at About.com) about the “Millennials” (those born between 1980 and 2000) to help me understand those that I work with. This is a list of what describes the best way to work with them:

  • Provide Structure
  • Provide Leadership and Guidance
  • Encourage “Can Do” Attitude
  • Like to work with teams
  • Need to be listened to
  • Up for the challenge
  • Multi-taskers
  • Electronically literate
  • Networkers
  • Life and Work well balanced
  • Employee Centered work place

What better people to become missionaries! If we challenge the “Millennials” to what needs to be done, maybe we can see God raising up a generation that can finish the pledge made by these men.

Mat 9:37-38  Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

(If you cannot read the pledge in this post email me at phil_sutton@ntm.org and I can send a larger copy of the text.)

Update on Janelle’s Surgery

We are encouraged that Janelle is doing well after the surgery. She is up, out and about. She started working in the afternoons about a week ago. No lifting is allowed until after 12 weeks of recovery. She cannot push, pull or bend. We go back for her 8 week check up in the first week of October. Thank you for all the encouraging notes that were sent to us. Keep praying for continued recovery.

Janelle is having Surgery August 8

Posted by Phil and Janelle on Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Janelle is having surgery August 8!

Despite her operation in Singapore 2 ½ years ago, Janelle has not been completely helped. There were 2 issues that needed to be dealt with: one a prolapsed bladder and the other a prolapsed uterus. The first issue was dealt with somewhat successfully, but the prolapsed uterus was not taken care of. This has caused some major discomfort and has become a health issue that can no longer be ignored.

For the past several months Janelle has gone through many tests to determine what should be done, and surgery was recommended. There will be a 12 week recovery time which will limit her to light work.

How can you help?

Continue to pray for us as we go through this time of medical issues.

  • Click here: Prayer if you will commit to doing so.

If you are a woman, and desire to encourage and receive more details than what we desire to share publically,

  • Click here: janelle_sutton@ntm.org and Janelle will send you more information on how to pray specifically for her situation.
  • Click here: Donate to make a donation to help cover the extra costs of tests and surgery.

Thank you, in advance, for coming alongside us in this critical time. We so appreciate each of you who have stood with us through our many years of ministry.

Phil’s Ministry

It has been such an encouraging time for the past couple of months working with people who are wanting to follow the Lord’s leading to get cross-cultural training. I have been working with 50 plus people who have committed their lives to reaching the unreached. They will be leaving their homes and family to start a journey that will take them to places where missionaries are desperately needed to fill in gaps to see more people come to Christ. Pray for them as they make the transition.

 Janelle’s Ministry

Janelle continues to work with Member Services which involves keeping a data base system updated with current information. Each missionary has a file where prayer letters can be stored so that NTM’s representatives can use this information to be better informed about the missionaries they serve. Janelle loads all this information into the computer and informs the correct departments about vital changes in ministry, new babies and ministry changes.

Ministry Partner’s Needed

Since coming home from Papua New Guinea we have seen the effects a ministry change has had on our financial support level. (Our current support level is 55% of our recommended support) We have those that have and continue to faithfully give to our ministry. We thank God for those that stand behind us. Our prayers are for adding ministry partners that would be willing to pray and financially give to us as we minister in the personnel department as the Candidate Coach and serving in Member Services. If you are led to do this, we can send additional information to you on what is involved in becoming a ministry partner with us.

“What is the Missionary Training Center?”

The Missionary Training Center prepares you for career ministry with New Tribes Mission. Think about it: If you were given the opportunity today to plant a church in an unreached tribe, would you know where to start? Missionary training teaches you about the complex concepts involved in tribal church planting, such as understanding culture and learning language, so you can effectively communicate cross-culturally. We’re also vitally concerned about your walk with God, so that in an isolated, high-pressure environment, your relationship with God can survive and even thrive.

2012 May – Grandparents for the First Time

We got a chance to visit Brock & Heidi just after our first grandson was born. Ryley Josiah Sutton, (6 pound 12.3 oz. and 19 inches long), was born April 7, 2012. We arrived the day of his birth and immediately went to the hospital. It was so fun to pick up this small bundle of joy.

Later in the week he was introduced to Penny. It was fun seeing the dogs’ reaction. While in Chattanooga, I got a chance to build some shelves for Brock’s Lego business. (A belated Christmas & birthday present.) We were able to spend a few days with them and then returned to Florida by Saturday.

Brock & Heidi & Ryley are doing fine. They are adjusting to a change in schedule and having someone with a good set of lungs let them know he is hungry. Although they are working on getting that schedule set so feeding time works out best for a tired mom.

2012 The Search for Commitment

The Search for Commitment

In my current ministry, I am helping new candidates through the process of acceptance to NTM’s training in Missouri. As I am talking with potential candidates, I am constantly seeking guidance in what to look for in deciding whether a person is “ready” for training and moving on overseas to fill the many needs around the world. It got me to thinking about what made the members of Janelle’s and my families choose a ministry and stick with it for so many years. Janelle’s brother, living in South East Asia for 27 years with another brother, Ken & Sue serving in the Philippines for 12 years. My brothers, Ron & Verna serving in Central Europe for the past 21 years, Arnie & Cathy serving in Brazil, Mexico & the USA for 36 years. Clyde & Diane served in Brazil & the USA for 25 years. We have served for 29 years in the USA & Papua New Guinea. What a great family heritage to be a part of.

So I look at those who went out before us and ask “Will the new candidates make that same commitment?” We have one of the largest groups of long veteran missionaries who are year by year going into retirement. They have faithfully served for years and now need to be replaced. So when I look at the new candidates my challenge is that they can make the same commitment to serve for 20 plus years. That is difficult to ask in today’s world. “You want me to commit to WHAT? 20 plus years! You have got to be kidding!”

What kept those people in my family continuing to serve for so many years? I think it boils down to one thing, God keeps us serving and He needs to be first in our lives.

So you might wonder how can I ask for that same commitment of the candidates of today? God does. He also says that “the laborers a few, but the harvest is great” So in short, we need committed people, because the work of planting churches in a tribal or under developed country is hard and time consuming. It does take people to commit to serving 20 plus years. Will you go or find someone to challenge to go? Go on the Journey

2011 Christmas Greetings

Merry Christmas from Phil and Janelle Sutton

We would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas. We will be spending Christmas day with our new upcoming family. Janelle and I, and Kyla, Chad and Brittany (our future daughter-in-law) will be joining her parent and grandparents who live here in Central Florida. It will be fun to get together with our new expanded family. I trust you all will have a blessed Christmas with your family.

We are in the New House

We are so thankful to all the guys that helped us move. We are thankful to God for providing a nice place for us to live.  The first project was to paint the kitchen prior to moving in. There is still much to unpack and do on the house. Shelves were made by the fire place in Kyla’s room, new mechanisms’ for the toilet, installed a new used stove and a dryer, etc… It is slowly coming together and we hope to be done with it enough to have Chad and his fiancé here for Christmas.

Harold, one of my co-workers, came by last Saturday and power washed the deck out back and the house. That was a huge blessing. The house has been sitting empty and the deck was black and grimy after being neglected for over 2 years. It brightened up the house too.

It has been a pleasure to work with all the New Tribes Bible Institute graduates that are headed to Camdenton, Mo to the Missionary Training. The current count for the January class is 35. This number of students is higher than resent January classes. God is raising up laborers in spite of troubled economic times. There is much to be done around the world. God is able.

Thanks for praying.

2011 PFO

NTM has a training program called Pre Field Orientation (PFO) that prepares missionaries for service with New Tribes Mission. This past week I had the privilege along with the rest of our Connection Center team to help train 4 associates and 1 career missionary with NTM. It is a time where missionaries learn various aspects of what to expect when serving here at Sanford and abroad. Many of the staff here at the NTM home office does each class session. Some of the departments represented are the; leadership, communications, child protection, medical and taxes, etc… The list goes on, but you get the idea. Janelle and I had many opportunities to help those that were heading for Papua New Guinea.
