Wed. June 22, 2011

Just wanted to send a short note to let you guys know what our plans are. We are rushing around trying to get things done so we can leave Florida this Saturday, June 25th. I am helping with VBS this week and trying to finish up last minute things that need to be done before our trip out west. This time Haley will be the only one of our children traveling with us – it will seem strange not to travel looking like the Beverly Hillbillies! (more…)

| Dear Praying Friends, January, 2011
It’s Exciting!! Another tribe hears the Bible taught for the first time! Bible teaching began this week among the Akolet people of Papua New Guinea.
“Adults and children gathered together under the shade of the large blue tarp as we prepared for the lesson to begin,” wrote missionaries Adam and Julie Martin. “Adam’s ‘podium’ was an empty 55-gallon drum. The seating was planks or mats the people brought with them. The ‘sound system’ was as loud as Adam could talk.”
The first lessons are introductory. Adam started by explaining that this teaching is different from anything they’ve ever heard. “It is God’s message for all mankind and each and every one of us needs to hear and understand it,” the Martins wrote. A large inflatable globe helped Adam explain where the people of Israel lived and how God’s message spread. (more…)

Christmas Greetings! Dec., 2010
It is hard to believe another year is fast grinding itself into the dust called history. As we look back on the past 11 months we see times when we doubted God, or our trust wavered, but in every case God was faithful, and He has brought us through another year. We do want to express our thankfulness to you, also, for standing with us by your prayers and through your sacrificial support to our lives and ministry. May God bless you richly this Christmas season!
Remembering Christ’s birthday at this time of year is so important – where would we be without the grace and salvation that He brought! However, all that food and all those sweets from the parties make it very hard to maintain healthy eating habits. We skipped our mission party a few days ago, choosing instead to spend those hours freezing in a cold wind as we watched our daughter, Haley, playing soccer. (more…)

Sept./Oct., 2010
Dear Friends,
We send you warm greetings from Florida, once again. We are enjoying the weather here for the time being. Our highs are in the mid eighties and our lows in the low sixties, and the humidity has dropped way down. It’s great! It is supposed to stay nice like this through Friday, so we shall see which way it goes after that.
We went to our mission’s beach retreat last weekend. It was a good time for all who attended, with a pizza night and an ice cream social the next. However, it ended with sadness. (more…)

It’s already the end of June and we are already wondering where the summer has gone! I am sure you agree that time just flies by too quickly!
Phil is keeping busy in the carpenter shop making window trim for some of the mission apartments. He built some kitchen cabinets on the side for an acquaintance and hopes to make another set in a couple of months – these extra jobs always help out with monthly expenses!
Of course, Jackie is out of school now but still works some in the NTM office. She recently spent a few weeks helping with the U.S. census but that work is over now. She, also, just finished helping with Vacation Bible School a
t our church. We had a fun week with about 50-60 kids. Jackie helped teach the Bible lessons to all the different age groups who rotated through the Bible class. We had a Montana cowboy theme, so that was a lot of fun! There were several unchurched kids attending so we pray that they will trust Christ if they didn’t during their time in VBS. (more…)

Late February News from the Burns:
Greetings from Florida. It has been so cold this year with temperatures below normal. We are still having lows in the thirties. Our snowbirds have to remember that, yes, this is cold for Florida, but it is still a lot warmer than where they come from.
It has been great having our volunteers here again this winter. The time has gone quickly and in a month all will be headed north, usually around the first of April. I was pleased that Doc Wally was able to be here again. He is 88 years old, but was stronger this year than last. I had a lot of wood ready for him and he has already turned most of it into beautiful cabinets. The kitchen we are working on right now is that of our main tax man and his wife. Brain and his crew are very busy this time of year filling out 1040 forms and filing them for many of our missionaries, both here and abroad. You can imagine what a blessing this service is to our tribal missionaries who already have much to trust the Lord for without
having the IRS being another worry.
Thank you for all of your prayers while Phil was sick. He spent five days in the hospital, and at last the chills stopped. He had a serious infection that went to the blood. He just completed two weeks of antibiotic and is again at work, full time. God is good! (more…)

Phil continues to recover at home. He has felt pretty tired and weak this week but seems to be improving. He still has one more week of antibiotics and he says he will be really glad when he is finished with the medicine.
Thank you all so much for your prayers. It was a little scary when I realized how serious his infection was. I am so thankful that the Lord gave the doctors wisdom to find the right antibiotic to quickly get the infection under control. God is good!

Phil came home from the hospital last night (Friday 2/12). He doesn’t seem to have a fever but is a little tired and weak. We had to go today to get his antibiotic which has to be injected into a port that they put in a vein. I will administer it 3 times a day for 14 days! That seems like a lot but I guess it was a bad infection. At least we can do it from home which is a blessing.
Thank all of you who prayed. Our God is good and is taking good care of us! We had so many call and visit and send emails. It is great to be a part of the family of God!! Thank you and God bless!

Hi! Just a quick note to ask you to pray for Phil. He started
feeling bad on Saturday (about 10 days ago). At first we thought he
had the flu and he just stayed home in bed. Later he developed
symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Then that went away and he
thought he was a little better, just to end up with a high fever
again. We finally started getting suspicious that it might be a
kidney infection but it was the weekend so we decided to wait until
Monday to see a doctor. We thought that the doctor would just give us an
antibiotic and send us home but instead he sent him straight to the
hospital! After 2 days in the hospital, Phil is still having high
fevers (up to 103.6) and chills. They know he has a urinary tract
infection but I think are trying to find the cause of it and trying to
find out if the infection got into the blood stream (sepsis) which can
be more serious. They have already tried two antibiotics which did
not help and hope the third one they started today will be the right one
to knock the infection out. Please pray with us for wisdom for the
doctors and that the infection will soon be cleared up. Thank you so
much for your prayers.

Cody logging in a few flight hours during his high school years.
Please pray for Cody as he checks out several schools in the area in preparation for getting his aircraft mechanics certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings. I think this just means that he will be qualified to work on airplane engines. He hopes to be a missionary pilot someday and this is the first step toward reaching that goal. After he gets his AP certification, then he hopes to get a job in airplane mechanics so he can finance the next step – getting his private and commercial pilot’s certificate and then airplane instrument rating.
