Gracia Burnham Visits our Mission School

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Our mission school just had Gracia Burnham speak in a chapel for the school kids.  You may remember that in May of 2001 Martin and Gracia were kidnapped from an island in the Philippines.  They had served as missionaries with New Tribes in the Philippines for 17 years.  Martin was a missionary pilot, flying missionaries, supplies, mail, and the sick and wounded and also encouraging those he came in contact with.  On May 27, they were kidnapped by a militant group.  Martin and Gracia were with the group for over a year when a firefight broke out. Martin was killed in the crossfire. Gracia was wounded, but was freed and returned to the States.  As Gracia shared her testimony and told what  happened to a few of the group who had been her captors, the kids were mesmerized. After answering many of their questions she challenged them to use their God-given abilities to serve the Lord.

teaching

Just wanted to send a short note to let you guys know what our plans are.  We are rushing around trying to get things done so we can leave Florida this Saturday, June 25th.    I am helping with VBS this week and trying to finish up last minute things that need to be done before our trip out west. This time Haley will be the only one of our children traveling with us – it will seem strange not to travel looking like the Beverly Hillbillies! (more…)

A New Year to Serve!

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Thursday, January 13th, 2011
Dear Praying Friends,                                                                   January, 2011

It’s Exciting!! Another tribe hears the Bible taught for the first time!  Bible teaching began this week among the Akolet people of Papua New Guinea.Adam Martin teaching akolet jan 2011

“Adults and children gathered together under the shade of the large blue tarp as we prepared for the lesson to begin,” wrote missionaries Adam and Julie Martin. “Adam’s ‘podium’ was an empty 55-gallon drum. The seating was planks or mats the people brought with them. The ‘sound system’ was as loud as Adam could talk.”

adam talking with akolet menThe first lessons are introductory. Adam started by explaining that this teaching is different from anything they’ve ever heard. “It is God’s message for all mankind and each and every one of us needs to hear and understand it,” the Martins wrote. A large inflatable globe helped Adam explain where the people of Israel lived and how God’s message spread. (more…)

Merry Christmas to You All!!

Christmas Greetings!                                                                      Dec., 2010

It is hard to believe another year is fast grinding itself into the dust called history.  As we look back on the past 11 months we see times when we doubted God, or our trust wavered, but in every case God was faithful, and He has brought us through another year.  We do want to express our thankfulness to you, also, for standing with us by your prayers and through your sacrificial support to our lives and ministry.  May God bless you richly this Christmas season!

haley running fall 2010Remembering Christ’s birthday at this time of year is so important – where would we be without the grace and salvation that He brought!  However, all that food and all those sweets from the parties make it very hard to maintain healthy eating habits. We skipped our mission party a few days ago, choosing instead to spend those hours freezing in a cold wind as we watched our daughter, Haley, playing soccer.  (more…)

News Flash!

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

We recently enjoyed a visit from the pastor of oneP7159986 of our supporting churches in Grants Pass, Oregon.  Pastor Guy Shields and his family spent a day boating with us on the St. John’s River.  We enjoyed having them in our home and just getting to know them a little better.  I think the boys especially enjoyed playing with Cody’s snake!

June News from Us Burns

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

It’s already the end of June and we are already wondering where the summer has gone!  I am sure you agree that time just flies by too quickly!

Phil is keeping busy in the carpenter shop making window trim for some of the mission apartments.  He built some kitchen cabinets on the side for an acquaintance and hopes to make another set in a couple of months – these extra jobs always help out with monthly expenses!P6259759

Of course, Jackie is out of school now but still works some in the NTM office.  She recently spent a few weeks helping with the U.S. census but that work is over now. She, also,  just finished helping with Vacation Bible School aP6239738t our church.  We had a fun week with about 50-60 kids.  Jackie helped teach the Bible lessons to all the different age groups who rotated through the Bible class.  We had a Montana cowboy theme, so that was a lot of fun!  There were several unchurched kids attending so we pray that they will trust Christ if they didn’t during their time in VBS. Burns May Update

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Dear Folks,                                                                  May 30, 2010

Greetings.  It is hot here and already feels like summertime.  It makes me think that our snowbird volunteers are on to something.  They come down here when the weather up north is cold and the weather here is, at last, pleasant, then they go home when northern temperatures are warming up to escape the heat that is quickly arriving here.

P4179336I am slowly catching up with my work- I’ve installed some utility cabinets in a staff apartment,  finished six tables for the Executive Committee conference room, made beds for the guest facility and made window trim- we are replacing 106 windows this year.  They are old and don’t keep the water out when it rains.  Our son, Cody has been hired as a part time worker to help with that.  I have enjoyed having him work with us and it lets him earn some experience and some cash for college and other needs.  I recently  finished a counter in our media room where visitors to our USA headquarters are taken for a video tour of the mission’s work around the world.  New projects never seem to be lacking around here. Our Colorado Visit to See Our Grandson – October, 2009

Posted by Phil and Jackie on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

We feel so blessed that an anonymous person offered to give us their air miles so we could fly out and see our grandson, Jaxon.  Well, here we are in Colorado having a great time with Jaxon (with Jason and Tiffany, too) and of course taking lots of pictures.  Just thought we’d share a few videos with you and you can check out a few of the pictures in our photo section, also.  We will be back home in Florida after November 2.
