The Next Generation

Posted by Macon and Katy Hare on Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

image001[1]Enoch was no different than many Piapoco teens, drinking and disrespectful, but all that changed the week his mother took him to visit missionaries Wayne and Patsy Gibson.   God did a work in Enoch’s heart right there in Wayne and Patsy’s home, and he accepted Christ as his Savior. When Enoch returned to his tribal village, people began to notice a marked change in him. On his next visit with the missionaries, Enoch received more teaching and showed obvious evidence that his faith in Christ was real.

While visiting Enoch’s village a few months later, Wayne encouraged him again to pursue the sincere knowledge of God’s Word. Now, Pablo, an older Piapoco Bible teacher is discipling Enoch 3 times a week.  Pray this young man will be strengthened and mature in his walk with the Lord. Pray that Enoch, and others like him, might become the next generation of leaders for the Piapoco Church.

The Translation Team

COL_Piapoco_348-595x300This is a first! The Piapoco New Testament is being Revised, not by foreign missionaries, but by three godly Piapoco Bible teachers.  Reinaldo, Walter and Silvio are now working in the book of Mark. Pray for wisdom and discernment as they put in long hours going over each verse.  Pray for Wayne Gibson as he checks their work, sent to him  via e-mail.

Another first, this summer Reinaldo, Walter and Silvio will be attending a translation seminar in Guatemala. Pray that they might receive their passports and visas without problems.

God is raising up the next generation of Bible translators and they are tribal believers! They have the tools, they have the knowledge, and they have the passion to see that God’s Word speak to the hearts of their people.

Are you as excited as I am?

The Children Shall Hear

image002[1]In the jungle town where Piapoco Bible translator, Reinaldo lives with his wife, Susana and their daughters, a group of Piapocos are hearing God’s Word taught in their own language. Tribal  teachers, Reinaldo, Silvio and Walter are giving them the Biblical foundation they need to place their faith in the true God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Pray many will put their faith in Christ.

Something new has been added.  While the men teach the adults and teens, Susana is taking the children aside and teaching them the Bible lessons that missionary Wayne Gibson adapted from the adult foundational lessons. Susana is the first Piapoco teacher to use the children’s material. Missionaries, Wayne and Patsy Gibson, hope to encourage and train other Christian teachers to use the lessons, so that the Piapoco children will hear what the parents are hearing in  a way they can understand and believe.

A Village Comes to Us

Piapoco Church leader, Pablo, cherishes the Word of God

Piapoco Church leader, Pablo, cherishes the Word of God

As we flew into the small river town and landed on the tarmac, worry lined my face. I wondered how effective this trip would be.  Plans changed so often before we arrived that I was not sure we would be able to get the photos we needed, or keep professional photographer, Dale Stroud busy.  Now we were not permitted to go upriver to the area we had originally aimed and that was a disappointment.

When the plane screeched down on the hot tarmac, I noticed a group holding banners along side the airstrip.  Some tourist agency, I imagined, advertising a wildlife adventure.  Boy was I wrong!  It was the tribal people who had come into town to meet us and greet the missionary who was our guide on this venture.  Hand made signs in English, Spanish and the tribal language welcomed us along with wide grins and excited chatter.  Dale and I were awed by the esteem and affection with which they greeted missionary, Wayne Gibson, who has given his life to reaching these people.

While we are taking photos, Wayne will be giving a seminar to three church leaders on Bible Translation.  They will be responsible for the updated version of the Bible in their tribal language.  Many more believers joined these leaders when they heard Wayne would be here and another tribal group has offered their meeting place for Wayne to teach the people each night.  Even though we could not go into their village, the village came to us.

I wish you were here with me to witness the passion these tribal believers have for God’s Word and their genuine hunger to learn and grow in the faith.  Thank you, Lord, for people like Wayne and Patsy Gibson, who are reaching those in far away places. Dale and I feel privileged to witness what God is doing here and share some of it with you who pray and give.

Your prayers are not in vain. Thank you.  Macon
