3,000 New Testaments reach the Yagaria tribe!

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

newsAP(8406)_img-595x300The last 2 weeks have been rather nuts with all of the travel and training – Kansas City to San Diego to Orlando to Kansas City. The thing that motivates and excites me is when I read and see stories like the following. All the hard work is definitely worth it!

Recently missionaries Carol and Chuck Kaptain traveled back to Papua New Guinea to attend the presentation ceremony for the revised Bible translation Carol worked so hard to complete. She was to be honored for her many years of service and work on the translation. They were celebrating the arrival of 3,000 copies of the newly revised New Testament in the Yagaria language. Believers from more than 70 churches……

Diagnosis: Spirits

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

“The diagnosis and prescription were not what you would have heard in most hospitals.” A Prai couple’s 9-month-old baby became seriously ill. He was listless and would not eat. So they took him to the hospital. There, the doctor examined him and could not find the cause of the baby’s illness. “It must be….

As I flipped through the New Tribes website, I am struck by how much I take the light we live in for granted. Let me explain. While there are some in our country that focus heavily on spirits and their control, the majority of us do not think or dwell on their affect on a daily bases. We go about our lives looking at events logically, some more so than others, not because we are smarter but because we have been blesses to live in a country that has progresses more rapidly than others. This is primarily due to the grip that evil and Satan has had on these people groups for such a long time. Not only does this grip affect their economic status but it affects their moment by moment outlook on life. Their life is griped by fear of the consequences if they do not obey the Spirits. In spite of this these people are still coming to faith in Christ. Lets commit to pray for these new believers as they wrestle with these new truths.

Refreshed Vision…

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Friday, July 8th, 2011

Yesterday I drove down to our Campus to run a few errands, when I paused for a moment to look out over the property. This odd sense of disconnection came over me and I had to stop and wonder why we had chosen to live here. I looked over the new construction projects, the old housing with no showers, the gravel roads, and the hod-podge of other buildings that were scattered over the campus. What is our purpose, what are we hoping to accomplish? It is so easy to put our head down and plow through the daily tasks that we become disconnected from the bigger picture of why we are here.  Here is a good example of why we (and you) are pressing forward to see this task of world evangelism accomplished.

Noel’s head dropped to his chest and his body hung limp.

What was the Uriay man thinking as he portrayed Christ’s death on the cross? “I almost cried,” Noel said. “Before you all started this teaching, I was in Satan’s canoe. I said bad things about other people … and as I hung there I kept thinking about how Christ bore all this pain and punishment for my sins. He died and His blood was poured out to cover my sins.”

Giving in more ways than one…

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

The last month of training for the Planned Giving course I am taking, has been rather tedious since it has mainly been about charitable tax law. The thought has crossed my mind as to why I am doing all this studying – is it all worth it – but then I read a story like the one below. For the work to continue overseas there MUST be funding! Right now our organization is primarily receiving cash gifts. The average person has only 9% of their net worth in liquid assets while the other 91% is tied up in non-liquid assets.

By completing this program and implementing this service, people will be able to give far more than they ever could have previously. This can done through setting up a charitable annuity, charitable remanded trust, will or many other tax -advantage giving tools. I am excited to see how this program will launch the work of the gospel even further through the enabling of believers. Please pray for me as I continue to study through this material. This is how I’m reminded that our hard work must continue!

As he finished, Wadamena, a mother of five spoke up with laughter in her voice, saying, “That was a true talk Eve said when she spoke out that it was ‘with the Lord’s help’ that she had given birth, wasn’t it? That is something that we women could never do alone. It is God that gives life and causes our children to be born and live, isn’t it!”  Mothers and fathers in the room chimed in with laughter saying, “That’s true. That’s true!” As the lesson progressed however, the story turned from one of lightheartedness and joy to a tale of darkness and deceit click here to read more

First Week of Estate/Gift Design Classes Begin!

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Saturday, April 9th, 2011

mentortopThe first week of brain stretching has begun! Wow! What a challenge to my personal beliefs and views on stewardship. I spent hours a day working on different passages of the Bible on what it means to be a STEWARD of God’s resources. We say that God is the owner of everything and yet we split off a % of what we designate to Him and the rest is ours. Is this really a Biblical view of God’s ownership of everything? Are we being the kind of steward that God is asking us to be according to His word?

This has been a personally challenging time for me as I process through just the first week of the estate gift and design classes in Carlsbad, CA taught by none other than Ray Lyne. This first week included topics such as communication in all different settings, personality profiling, Biblical foundation for planned giving, and marketing. I have a ton of studying to do between now and the next training in August in preparation for a one week in-depth study on charitable tax law. Please pray the God continues to guide me and my family to be able to help serve with New Tribes Mission in this capacity and thank you for your continual support.

Witch Doctor Screams for Freedom

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Freedom. The desire is so God-given, it literally screams from within our souls to be satisfied. And to taste its peace, most will gladly sacrifice the dearest thing they have to find it. Even life itself.

Hours before dawn, the tortured Baniua chief stood at the river’s edge, trembling. The battle for his soul raged on in his heart. He had to make it stop.

“I want to be free!” he cried out desperately across the water. The empty echo didn’t bring any answers and only increased his agitation. “I have to be free,” he hissed the words frantically to himself — then stepped into the water.

The Baniua chief was a witchdoctor. He had everything he could ever wish or hope for. He had respect, wealth and power. No one ever made a move without consulting him. He had free reign over his village and people.

Yet he wasn’t free. He knew it. He was a slave to all the dead spirits and all the rituals needed to appease all the dead spirits. It was an endless game of manipulation — with the spirits ready to pounce at his first unguarded moment. And the constant, fearful waiting for what the spirits might do, ate around his heart like cancer.

Then a missionary came to his village offering education. He welcomed that. He wanted his people to learn to read and write and strongly encouraged them to listen to her. He even allowed them to listen when she taught about God and the Bible.

But he wouldn’t listen, of course. As chief, he wanted his people to learn what they could, so he could show off his newly literate society. But he was above the learning himself. As witchdoctor, he had the responsibility to protect the old and deeply entrenched way of life — not to mention maintaining his power and control over the spirits and his village.

But something unexpected began to happen.

One by one, the Baniua people were changing. Lights were springing into eyes. Faces were brightened with smiles. People were helping one another. Families were loving each other. But most of all, something old and familiar had suddenly vanished from their lives. Their fear was gone.

His people were … free.

And then the battle ensued in the Baniua witchdoctor’s heart. Should he keep to the old ways or reach for the new? If he let go of his power and control and manipulation of the spirits, would he be free too? Or would the spirits just swallow him up in sickness and death? Were they even trying to trick him now?

Sensing his spiritual turmoil, the missionary approached him many times and asked him to turn to Jesus, but he refused. He was a witchdoctor! He didn’t need anything else! Or did he?

newsAP(10327)_imgFinally, he couldn’t sleep — at all. Every night became an excruciating inner war. Old or new? And the spirits began calling his name louder and louder.

One night in desperation, he ran to the spot behind his house where he had hidden his witchcraft articles, passed down from his father. He madly clawed up the earth, hoping for answers.

But the little pouch of feathers, crushed bones, teeth from dead ancestors, pieces of dried pig’s heart and poison herbs, just lay there silently in the dust. No answers. He snatched up the pouch and ran for the river. He must end this.

Now torn and weary at the river’s edge, he clutched his father’s pouch to his chest and stepped into the water. He had to be free. He waded out deeper and deeper and then stopped. He hesitated for a moment — then made his decision.

He must throw the articles, entrusted to him by his father, back to the devil. He must throw away generations of witchcraft and life as he knew it.

But as he tried to raise his arm, it wouldn’t move. It seemed tied to his side by an invisible force. So he offered his first prayer to the God of the Bible and asked for help.

Strength and power surged back into his arm and he heaved the little bag far out into the water and watched it splash down and disappear. The Baniua chief stretched his arms to the now rising sun — and placed his trust in Christ. He was finally free.

Prayer Request for Dear Friend and Arrival in Florida

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Friday, November 12th, 2010

We safely arrived in Florida today for the next three weeks – THANK YOU for your prayers. We are doing fundraising for our ministry and are so excited to share about tribal missions with our friends and family in this warm southern state! If you are in a Bible study group or attend a church that might be interested and open in letting us share about missions, please email us @ luke_griffin@ntm.org or call us @ 920-544-1380. We are very flexible for the month of November.

We also would love to have you pray for our dear friend Marti. We saw her in Maryland when Tina was speaking at a youth convention back in July. She thought she had perfect health over the summer. However, in the past two weeks, she’s been diagnosed with Leukemia AND breast cancer. She can only have one disease treated at a time. Praise God she has the type of Leukemia where there’s a 70% chance of a FULL recovery! Thank you for your prayers in advance!

Hope to see you Floridians soon :-)

Luke Attends Financial Conference in Colorado Springs…

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Opinions and strategies were flying as we poured over the data. I was seated at a table with 20 other people from the McConkey/Johnston financial conference I am attending here in Colorado Springs. We are working on a case study with three other groups on how we can improve the funding for specific non profits. As we came to the end of our discussion, I was elected as the spokesperson for presenting our strategy to the rest of the conference attendees. I felt a little out of place, being the youngest person here, but learned a lot from the men I’ve met the past several days.

I came out here three days ago with three other members of our development team from the Missionary Training Center to further our education on how to fundraise for New Tribes Mission. God has used this time to unify our vision to further His Kingdom. Many good plans in the near future…stay tuned.

Tina and Levi head to Eldon High for Hollywood Exposed presentation…

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Thursday, October 7th, 2010

I had a great time speaking to high school students from Eldon, Versailles and other surrounding schools today. Levi had the chance to be at his 4th school presentation since birth 5 weeks ago. Luckily the girls love him :D

I have to say that these two packed crowds were VERY attentive but so serious. I know this message sometimes takes a couple days to sink in, but some teens spoke to me afterwards and shared how the message helped. So many of our young people are hurting in ways I never knew teens would even have to deal with. One young guy was sad that his father never seen him grow up. His dad is in prison in California and wants to meet him this Feb for the first time in MANY YEARS. I pray that somehow these teens will be challenged to live counter-culturally to what they are being bombarded with on a daily basis.

Thank you everyone for your prayers, financial support and most of all your LOVE and ENCOURAGEMENT! We love serving God through the ministry He’s given us.

The Edge

Posted by Luke and Tina Griffin on Sunday, September 19th, 2010

Shrieks of fear and terror rang out across the meadow as one after another, the girls got strapped onto the 60+ foot tall zip line and pushed over the edge of the tower. I worked yesterday at the christian camp down the road from our house that had several hundred girl scouts taking a teamwork/leadership course. Part of that course included a high ropes challenge course. I manned the bottom of the zip line which included getting them unhooked and down to the ground safely. It was a new way of ministry for me but God’s probably preparing me for a possible daughter someday.
