The Book of Acts available in the Mengen language.
In recent days, we as a team were able to put printed copies of the book of Acts into the hands of our believers . We gave copies to them during the time that they were being persecuted and it was great to see that they sat down just right where they were and started to read. One believer told me recently that he just took the book and read it all in one sitting. Others went straight to chapter 4 to read about how the early church handled persecution.
It was amazing timing that we were able to get Acts into the believers’ hands the same week that they went through the worst period of persecution to date.
Thanks for your support in seeing the Mengen people reached with God’s Word!
Love in Christ.

Instead of fear there is joy and peace!
As you might know by now, the Mengen people know how to use social pressure to help get what they want. They have frequently threatened the believers and us missionaries in order to force us to comply with what they want.
On Easter Sunday, as you know, we had a great service with 20 believers taking part in reading through the story of Christ’s last days on earth. As we finished our service the local cult leader came threatening the believers. Eventually more unbelievers joined in and soon people were being attacked and property damaged. Later, rumours came to us that other villages were coming to attack the believers. Some village elders requested that the police be flown in to help sort out the problems. In the following days, the guys who caused the trouble hid out in the jungle; the police made every effort to find them but they were unable to. Our village grew quite empty during this time as many went and hid in the jungle or slept in their gardens
for fear of further trouble.
We are happy to tell you that last Sunday the community came together as a whole, the culprits came out of the jungle and, with the help of the police, they held a village court and sought a resolution. It seems that the situation is resolved for now and it looks like things are getting back to normal.
It was good to see the Mengen church growing in this time. The church came together on Thursday night like never before. They sang, prayed and shared, encouraging their hearts in the Lord. It was amazing hearing even the unbelievers speaking amongst themselves about the joy and peace which are evident amongst the believers. One unbelieving man said, “It is not good that the believers are happy in this difficult time. How can they sing and eat and be happy? They must be sad and scared and hide.”
Praise the Lord that he has removed the fear and is giving us boldness!
Thanks for your prayers in this time,
Lourens for the Mengen Church.

Praise the Lord for our Co workers
Many of you guys have been praying with us foer my Co Workers Simon and Annika Flanagan. They have been a great blessing to us and we are very exited that Simon has completed his lannguage studies and is now helping with the work load.
It’s the week that Simon finished up his language and culture study. His final test covered a wide variety of subjects. He writes, “The test lasted for three days …. I had to explain how paper is made, how the rain works from evaporation onward …”
Though he is excited to have reached this milestone, there’s no time to sit back and rest. Simon urges, “Get out your knee pads, as we need your prayers.” He will be starting to teach the Firm Foundations Bible lessons, as well as writing lessons to be translated back into English.
Simon shares further, “These lessons will be used by consultants to check that my lessons are communicating well.” Eventually the lessons will be checked by native Mengen speakers. He explains that this is to assure that he is communicating well and that the content is all there.
Simon’s listeners are not just passive language critics. One teacher’s home where Simon will be teaching lessons includes a cult member whose family exerts much pressure for her to not listen to gospel teaching. Others who are listening to these lessons are Mengen believers experiencing adversity. Simon urges, “Pray that God would help me to be clear as I teach the gospel lessons and that I would have freedom in the Mengen language.”
Please pray for Annika as she completes her culture and language studies. Pray for Mengen believers and their families who work with Simon and Annika that they will grow in their understanding of God’s Word. Pray that God will open the hearts of this cult member and her friends who are hearing the message of the Gospel taught. And pray for this village where the seed of the Gospel is being planted daily, for God’s mighty work in watering and increasing the harvest for His glory

Persecution in the Mengen church
“Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.” — Jesus
As some of you might know, the Mengen believers have been suffering some persecution recently.
On Sunday 8thApril the Mengen believers in our village where just fininshing up their time of worship as they celeberated easter. Then as they were dispersing an unbeliever came and accused us that what we were doing here in the village is false and untrue and as a result a fight broke out during which one of the believers’ houses where damagaed and he was assaulted severely.
Then other unbelievers of whom one is called Merengi under the influence of home brew confronted the other people in the village who were attending church and threatened them. The violance escalated so much so that we needed our wifes and children removed from the village and the security personall were flown in to stabalise the sitauation.
Right now the situation is quiet but not stable back in the village because there were fear being felt by mothers, girls and small school children that after we returned the suspect will come out from his hide out and terrorized them. He had made threats earlier towards the NTM workers and other villagers who support their work here.
Please keep on praying for the Mengen believers as they learn to stand even in times of persecution.
“This temporal and brief suffering, how shall it be exchanged for the reward of a bright and eternal honor!” — St. Cyprian of Carthage
Its raining and raining and raining!!!!
Hi friends
Thanks for keeping us and espesially the Mengens in prayer! Our team are having really rainy weather, it’s is black skies, rain and even fog in the house! We are walking through swamp now for the most part and it is hard to get cloths dry just now! That is jungle life for you:)
Things are ticking on as far as teaching goes, I am now teaching through more practicall lessons in Romans 12 and my co worker is teaching evenagelicall lessons on the the fulfillment of Gods promise of the world flood and then next week we will be teaching on the tower of Babel. Please pray that people will see clearly again that we are all sinners, because of the sin in Adam and that we are in need of a redeemer. Pray that teaching through the story of Noah will show that we are just like those people who died outside of the boat. Pray that they will see that God keeps his promises and that there is only one door and one way to eternal life and peace with God.
Some general prayer point: -
1) Pray for simon as he would like to start and teach two new lessons per week in a while and that he and the hearers would be ready for the increase in information. Pray for the trainee teachers as this will increase their workload also. Pray for us for wisdom as we evaluate the hearers.
2) Pray for this new discipleship opportunity at our local high-school. Pray that the believing children will be strengthened in their faith and that teachers and other students may be challenged and see their need of the teaching.
3) Pray for our co workers wife Annika as she continues to learn Mengen that she would keep encouraged and progress well.
4) We have had some opportunities again with our local leader, pray God would save his soul. Also pray for the opposition we have been experiencing from the local Kivung group that God will turn this around to His glory.
5) Our tractor shed and tractor at the airstrip are being damaged on a reasonably regular basis pray that we can find a solution.
6) Simon is developing bible studies for our trainee teachers on being a disciple, bible studies on marriage and child training. Please pray for wisdom as we teach through the basics of these topics.
7) Pray for longer periods of health, we seem to be down with illness on a regular basis.
Pray for us as we are reevaluating the schooling of our kids and espesailly of our oldest daught
er Madeleen. It seems that Marie and Madeleen will be going home for som tests to be done and it might be that we all go home for a short time to get her checked out.
9) Pray that our regular monthly needs will be met in line with the economy and expenses in PNG.
Thanks so much for your prayers and partnership in the gospel, and remember that this is not possible if it is not for you guys!
Lourens for the Mengen church
He is standing at my back.
The Mengens use the phrase, ‘Ore maisi nga gigu’. It means he is stannding at my back. And it means that some one is supporting you!
The dictionary says as follow.

Now today I would like to say thanks to Simon and Annika Flanagan! They are our co workers in the bush where we are working and they support us.
