Happy People

We wanted to update you during this time that Laura is in the US to let you know how things are going…

Laura reports cold weather, snow, snow and more snow but LOTS of lovin’ on the grandkids. The picture with this update was taken by the webcam just after Laura arrived. She said that Nicole has mentioned over and over just how grateful she is to have her mom there while Justin is away. We’re glad that Laura could be there to be a blessing to her during this time. (She even got out one day and shoveled snow!)

It’s Harvest Time!

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Rice-harvest-015It’s harvest time here in the mountains and people are busy bringing rice in from their fields!

This year has been a particularly good harvest for which they are all very thankful. They have had just the right amount of rain and sunshine at the right times to ripen it. The village is often empty during this time of year because people are working to get the harvest in before it rots with the oncoming rains or the rats get it. It’s important to get it in while the getting is good. (Speaking of good – it is delicious! Wish you could be here to enjoy it with us!)

trip home September 20 ’10

Safely home…

We spent this last week making purchases and preparing to head into the village while fighting jet lag. Lance caught Laura’s cold and discovered the one good thing about having a cold and jet lag at the same time is that you sleep well at night when you take night time cold medication! :)

Since the plane is down for repair, we got to go in overland. Brian Pruett, the pilot, was kind enough to offer to take us and our things in his 4-wheel drive vehicle. We left at 4a.m. and arrived at “the end of the road” at 10:00. There were quite a number of people there to help carry our cargo. What a blessing that was! We started hiking at 10:30 and arrived in the valley at 11:15. Praise God for clear weather and a safe arrival! We know many are praying for us!

Jennings had us over for lunch and this afternoon found us unpacking and putting things away. It’s after 5pm as we type this, evening is fast approaching and we’ll be ready for bed early – WE’RE BEAT! But before we sign off we have…

An urgent prayer request!!

We have received an urgent request from one of the church elders here in our village. His name is Sansuwa and it seems that his 16 year old daughter Dina has been abducted by a group under the guise of working. According to Dina in a phone conversation with her parents, she is just continually taken around by these people from city to city with a group of girls and lots of men look at them. It sounds very much like she is being used for striptease and possibly other things that she was too embarrassed to mention.

Apparently she was staying with a relative on the coast as a house help watching the kids and a man came in the night and she was told to go with him. The relatives say she just ran away which is very much out of character and she has pleaded with her parents on the phone to pray for her and help her get away from the people who have her.
It seems that the way they keep the girls trapped is to not give them any money or opportunity to get away. Being a tribal girl too she does not know her way around even the smallest coastal town let alone the cities where she is being taken.

Sansuwa has asked us to pray for him. He left for town today to meet with officials who have said they will help try and locate her. It sounds very much like the relative she was staying with actually arranged for her to join this group, so Sansuwa is going to first demand that the relatives help get her back and if not, then they will go to the authorities.

Please pray with us that the Lord will work this out for Dina to be freed from this situation and returned to her parents.

Thank you so much for your prayers for us and the Higaunon.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura

Good-byes!

No one likes saying goodbye, especially to grandchildren who have done an unbelievable job of wrapping their grandparent’s hearts around their fingers! We praise God for the time He has graciously given us to be here with Justin & Nicole and their kids. Please pray for us as we say goodbye to them at the end of this week.

Who messed with the thermostat?

Thank you for praying

Okay, who messed with the thermostat? Isn’t Florida supposed to be warm? :) But then, anything below 70 degrees (f) is cold to us! We stopped off in Hawaii to visit good friends and it was even unseasonably cool there! All joking aside, we praise God for a safe trip and for exit row seats all the way! For those of you who may not realize, that means extra leg room and a more comfortable trip.

Back to work after a wonderful vacation!

Jason and Lance watching the printer as the 1st copy of the Tala-Andig New Testament is printed!

The Lord brought us safely back “home” to our village on Thursday.

We had a good time with our friends who were visiting from Hawaii, plus we got to surprise our coworkers, the Harts, when they got back into the country at the end of March!

We visited three islands that we’d never been to before and enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation anew. Thank you for praying for us over the past couple of weeks while we traveled.

Lance was able to finish up his part of the last check through the Higaunon New Testament.  Our coworker Ron wasn’t able to finish up his part yet, due to a previous commitment to help a fellow missionary who is here for a few days to get his own New Testament ready for print.

We are going to do the printing of Jason & Shirley Birkin’s Tala-Andig New Testament here with our big printer, God willing!  They want 100 copies initially. Upon printing the first copy this morning of the Tala-Andig New Testament Jason said, “It will be such a blessing to have the New Testament in one book for the Tala-Andig Church to study from!”

We would appreciate prayer for this project to go smoothly, as well as the finishing up of the Higaunon Scriptures so it can get sent to the printer soon. We appreciate your part in our lives and the ministry to the Higaunon people.

Have a blessed Resurrection Day!

Ostman Update

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Bible teachers share God`s word in individual homes.

Exciting news was shared with us recently from one of the Higaunon Bible teachers.

Over the past few years, Muyiku has been teaching his family group in a village down river from us. Since 1984 this group has outright refused to listen to God’s Word! Now, however, his father, brothers, sisters and spouses are listening and have believed the Gospel message! They are now challenging others to listen to the teaching as well. Praise the Lord with us for this wonderful news!

A CLOSED DOOR

We mentioned in our last update that we were praying about making a “quick” visit to the US. Thank you to all of you who prayed for us in this.

We spent hours trying to figure out a way to use our miles to make this trip but have gotten nowhere. We also checked on purchasing tickets, but the cost is too much for just a one month trip. We and our children are disappointed, but we trust God’s hand.

The Higaunon New Testament

Work continues on preparing the Higaunon New Testament for print. Thanks for your prayers! We hope to see this finished up soon and on its way to the printer in the US!

Thank you for your partnership in this ministry! Thank you for continuing to PRAY.

Secure in Christ alone,
Lance & Laura
