Life’s adventures…

1 Thessalonians 5:24 – Faithful is He who calls you who also will do it!

Some of you remember that this is what we looked like thirty years ago – the rest of you are probably laughing! :) Who would have guessed then that we’d be looking back from this vantage point having experienced so much in life!? God is faithful – that’s for sure!

Thirty years ago on Super Bowl Sunday we boarded a plane in Chicago for Manila, Philippines. Maybe you can imagine how much reminiscing we’ve been doing, as our daughter and her family have now begun their own “adventure” on the other side of the world! (they arrived safely Feb 3rd)

Ostman Update…

Our life verse is 1 Thessalonians 5:24 “He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” (referring to the previous verses that promises He will preserve us unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.) 2 Thessalonians 3:3 says that “…the Lord is faithful; He will make you strong and guard you from the evil one.” Indeed, God is faithful and He is conforming us to the image of His Son, so much so that we can say that “All things work together for good to those who love God…” (Romans 8:28,29) It is exciting to see God at work in and through our lives and the lives of people around us.

We are writing this from near Syracuse, NY. with our daughter and son-in-law who will be attending their field prep seminar and they asked us if we would come up and watch their children for the ten days they will be in meetings. Of course we said “yes” and they graciously offered that I use their office at their church. Praise the Lord with us that their support is coming in.

I continue working on Old Testament translation. I just finished Deuteronomy 20 and yes, I continue to enjoy it!

We did have a week off from translation as we attended a workshop called, “Strengthening Your Interpersonal Skills.” We really enjoyed that and ask that you pray for us to put into practice the things we learned.

Sansuwa teaching

As we type this, Romans 8:28 is fresh on our minds!
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

Thank you for praying for Lance this week. He and our son-in-law had a great three days in Indianapolis at the North American Missions Conference. They met many people and enjoyed hearing how God is at work around the world.

In our last update, we asked for prayer for the tuberculosis crisis in the village.  The first few days following that update, we anticipated word of Sansuwà’s home going. He had told his family to prepare themselves for the very strong probability of him dying. However, God had other plans and on top of that, something else happened…

Returns and Rejoicings…

Returns and Rejoicings

I had a wonderful time with Nicole, Olivia, Jacob and Owen. Being there with them for those weeks met the desires of my “mother’s and grandmother’s heart.” Thanks again for praying for us both, especially during the time I was away, through my sickness, and for my return to the Philippines.Nana & Livy

Our son-in-law Justin returned from his trip to Asia before I left their home. He came back excited about the work that is going on and which they hope to join by early next year, the Lord willing. Justin & Nicole continue to do pre-field ministry and their support level is now at 72%! This is cause for rejoicing. Please join us in prayer for the remainder of their support, for the contacts and meetings to see more partners in their ministry. We rejoice in those who have already joined their “team.”

Reporting from two sides of the world REVISITED!

nana & kids

Please pray for Laura.

She was scheduled to return home to the Philippines earlier this week. However, last week she came down with the flu and developed pneumonia. Consequently, she had to cancel her return flight. She saw the doctor at the urgent care clinic twice and after two prescriptions, one for flu and one for pneumonia, she is finally improving, albeit slowly. Because she was traveling alone, I thought it best to get her trip insurance. Praise the Lord with us for that! Please pray she gets well so she can return home! In the mean time, she is enjoying the grandkids and Nicole isn’t disappointed to have her mom there a bit longer! :)

Happy People

We wanted to update you during this time that Laura is in the US to let you know how things are going…

Laura reports cold weather, snow, snow and more snow but LOTS of lovin’ on the grandkids. The picture with this update was taken by the webcam just after Laura arrived. She said that Nicole has mentioned over and over just how grateful she is to have her mom there while Justin is away. We’re glad that Laura could be there to be a blessing to her during this time. (She even got out one day and shoveled snow!)

It’s Harvest Time!

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Rice-harvest-015It’s harvest time here in the mountains and people are busy bringing rice in from their fields!

This year has been a particularly good harvest for which they are all very thankful. They have had just the right amount of rain and sunshine at the right times to ripen it. The village is often empty during this time of year because people are working to get the harvest in before it rots with the oncoming rains or the rats get it. It’s important to get it in while the getting is good. (Speaking of good – it is delicious! Wish you could be here to enjoy it with us!)

trip home September 20 ’10

Safely home…

We spent this last week making purchases and preparing to head into the village while fighting jet lag. Lance caught Laura’s cold and discovered the one good thing about having a cold and jet lag at the same time is that you sleep well at night when you take night time cold medication! :)

Since the plane is down for repair, we got to go in overland. Brian Pruett, the pilot, was kind enough to offer to take us and our things in his 4-wheel drive vehicle. We left at 4a.m. and arrived at “the end of the road” at 10:00. There were quite a number of people there to help carry our cargo. What a blessing that was! We started hiking at 10:30 and arrived in the valley at 11:15. Praise God for clear weather and a safe arrival! We know many are praying for us!

Jennings had us over for lunch and this afternoon found us unpacking and putting things away. It’s after 5pm as we type this, evening is fast approaching and we’ll be ready for bed early – WE’RE BEAT! But before we sign off we have…

An urgent prayer request!!

We have received an urgent request from one of the church elders here in our village. His name is Sansuwa and it seems that his 16 year old daughter Dina has been abducted by a group under the guise of working. According to Dina in a phone conversation with her parents, she is just continually taken around by these people from city to city with a group of girls and lots of men look at them. It sounds very much like she is being used for striptease and possibly other things that she was too embarrassed to mention.

Apparently she was staying with a relative on the coast as a house help watching the kids and a man came in the night and she was told to go with him. The relatives say she just ran away which is very much out of character and she has pleaded with her parents on the phone to pray for her and help her get away from the people who have her.
It seems that the way they keep the girls trapped is to not give them any money or opportunity to get away. Being a tribal girl too she does not know her way around even the smallest coastal town let alone the cities where she is being taken.

Sansuwa has asked us to pray for him. He left for town today to meet with officials who have said they will help try and locate her. It sounds very much like the relative she was staying with actually arranged for her to join this group, so Sansuwa is going to first demand that the relatives help get her back and if not, then they will go to the authorities.

Please pray with us that the Lord will work this out for Dina to be freed from this situation and returned to her parents.

Thank you so much for your prayers for us and the Higaunon.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura

Good-byes!

No one likes saying goodbye, especially to grandchildren who have done an unbelievable job of wrapping their grandparent’s hearts around their fingers! We praise God for the time He has graciously given us to be here with Justin & Nicole and their kids. Please pray for us as we say goodbye to them at the end of this week.
