Happy People

We wanted to update you during this time that Laura is in the US to let you know how things are going…

Laura reports cold weather, snow, snow and more snow but LOTS of lovin’ on the grandkids. The picture with this update was taken by the webcam just after Laura arrived. She said that Nicole has mentioned over and over just how grateful she is to have her mom there while Justin is away. We’re glad that Laura could be there to be a blessing to her during this time. (She even got out one day and shoveled snow!)

Psalms, Proverbs and Pogong…

Pogong and his family

Thank you so much for praying for Lance’s work on the Psalms. He’s really been enjoying recording each chapter with Pogong, his translation helper. However, last week and this week he’s had to lay that aside as Pogong is away on a ministry trip.

Pogong has lived with his family in a village for a number of years where He has been teaching God’s Word to about 100 people. Last year he started living here more often then there handing over the responsibility to the people there. As Pogong and his wife phase out of that village, they will visit from time to time to check on the church’s progress. Their heart’s desire is to move to another village that needs the gospel. kids singing in evening meeting

Higaunon Children singing to their hearts content!

And the angel said unto them, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10,11

Amy Carmichael said, “When you are facing the impossible, you can count on the God of the impossible.”

Thinking about all those years ago when Mary was going through the “impossible” in her life and all the things that passed through her mind – and in the end, what do we learn? We learn that with God, “All things are possible!” We are so grateful to the God of the impossible for the incredible things He has done and is doing in our lives.

an outreach with bones!

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

This week the Higaunon church is hosting a seminar for the Bible teachers. They have come from several outreach villages.

This picture has several stories behind it that we want to share with you.

Starting from the right –

Langan Langan and Iyicame here in the late 80’s because he had heard that the “message of life” had come to our village. He wanted to be taught so he could be saved and take the message back to his village so that others could hear and be saved. It happened just the way he wanted (and more so since he married Iyi, our neighbor’s daughter). Today there is a church in their village with about 100 men women and children in regular attendance. Langan and Iyi sat on our porch yesterday sharing how God has blessed the ministry. Unbelievers in their village are surprised at how well things are going for them, especially since they don’t get a salary; they live on the little the church gives them and what they get selling produce from their garden.

It’s Harvest Time!

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Rice-harvest-015It’s harvest time here in the mountains and people are busy bringing rice in from their fields!

This year has been a particularly good harvest for which they are all very thankful. They have had just the right amount of rain and sunshine at the right times to ripen it. The village is often empty during this time of year because people are working to get the harvest in before it rots with the oncoming rains or the rats get it. It’s important to get it in while the getting is good. (Speaking of good – it is delicious! Wish you could be here to enjoy it with us!)

Young lady with childTwo Visitors

We had two visitors at the house the other day. The first one was all about “everyone is persecuting me!” Our neighbor was rather upset by the way he perceived people were treating him. We told him he needed to go see the church leadership. It has been many years since we have taken any kind of teaching/leadership role amongst the Higaunon. Our job is to provide teaching materials and translation of scripture. Not that we mind hearing what people have to say… not at all… like Alice who came later in the day. (more…)

trip home September 20 ’10

Safely home…

We spent this last week making purchases and preparing to head into the village while fighting jet lag. Lance caught Laura’s cold and discovered the one good thing about having a cold and jet lag at the same time is that you sleep well at night when you take night time cold medication! :)

Since the plane is down for repair, we got to go in overland. Brian Pruett, the pilot, was kind enough to offer to take us and our things in his 4-wheel drive vehicle. We left at 4a.m. and arrived at “the end of the road” at 10:00. There were quite a number of people there to help carry our cargo. What a blessing that was! We started hiking at 10:30 and arrived in the valley at 11:15. Praise God for clear weather and a safe arrival! We know many are praying for us!

Jennings had us over for lunch and this afternoon found us unpacking and putting things away. It’s after 5pm as we type this, evening is fast approaching and we’ll be ready for bed early – WE’RE BEAT! But before we sign off we have…

An urgent prayer request!!

We have received an urgent request from one of the church elders here in our village. His name is Sansuwa and it seems that his 16 year old daughter Dina has been abducted by a group under the guise of working. According to Dina in a phone conversation with her parents, she is just continually taken around by these people from city to city with a group of girls and lots of men look at them. It sounds very much like she is being used for striptease and possibly other things that she was too embarrassed to mention.

Apparently she was staying with a relative on the coast as a house help watching the kids and a man came in the night and she was told to go with him. The relatives say she just ran away which is very much out of character and she has pleaded with her parents on the phone to pray for her and help her get away from the people who have her.
It seems that the way they keep the girls trapped is to not give them any money or opportunity to get away. Being a tribal girl too she does not know her way around even the smallest coastal town let alone the cities where she is being taken.

Sansuwa has asked us to pray for him. He left for town today to meet with officials who have said they will help try and locate her. It sounds very much like the relative she was staying with actually arranged for her to join this group, so Sansuwa is going to first demand that the relatives help get her back and if not, then they will go to the authorities.

Please pray with us that the Lord will work this out for Dina to be freed from this situation and returned to her parents.

Thank you so much for your prayers for us and the Higaunon.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura

Family Timefamily picture

We have been enjoying a visit from Justin, Nicole and children since August 21st. They had several meetings on their way south and here in Florida. Please continue to pray for the support they lack so they can get to East Asia, next year, as He wills.

During our visit together, we enjoyed a lovely quiet two days at the beach thanks to some friends.  Then, other friends of ours from church heard that family was coming and arranged for us to go to Disney. The best part of that was watching the grand-kid’s reaction to everything. We arrived home late that night weary and worn but having enjoyed every moment!!

We told him, “God will have His way”

BikbikA number of years ago an old man showed up in the village and left a few days later with Tahak’s daughter.

Bikbik was gone and everyone was sad, especially Tahak. Bikbik was upset that her dad didn’t do anything to try and keep her! God only knew when or if we’d see her again.

God’s Appointments!

God’s appointments

What an awesome journey we’ve had since leaving Justin & Nicole! Thank you so much for taking the time to pray for us. God has given us safety and allowed us to experience some unexpected visits. As an example, we were in North Carolina when we decided to take a couple of days and sight see. We ended up staying at a lodge where we met a couple from Canada and come to find out, we have friends in common! Each “appointment” has been just one more confirmation from God that we are exactly where He wants us to be.

One treat (of many!!) was being able to see Lance’s uncle and aunt who are 88 and 86. It has been great connecting with them again and other family members.

We are in Wisconsin and will be heading south to be with our son Robert and grandson Ean. We’ll be there for a couple of weeks before seeing more family and finally arriving back in Florida the second week of July.

Update

Thanks for praying for Elias. He and his family are heading to their home country of Germany this month for further treatment. Please pray for them as they adjust to this change and look to the Lord for their future!

Our co-workers, Ron & Michelle produced a DVD on the Higaunon New Testament. We have handed out many copies already and if you would like to receive one, please let us know.

Thanks for praying for us as we travel and thanks for praying for the Higaunon.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura
