Rees Family Update November- Bush Orientation Follow Up

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry, Uncategorized on Dec 2nd, 2011 | Discuss This Post

We completed our Bush Orientation!!! We spent the past two months in the Jungles of the East Sepik of Papua New Guinea. Veteran missionaries Brooks and Nina Buser hosted us and oriented us as we cotinued our Tok Pisin study, learned the life and the work of men and women in the bush, saw a new healthy functioning tribal church, learned about bringing literacy to a tribal group, saw the translation process and how the Tribal men or women actually gets the Bible in their own heart language, and so so so much more. The Leaders of the Church were amazing, men and women who all their lives had been in utter darkness and within the past 7 years had come to know Jesus from a foundational understanding. Their stories of orgin and life and customs had been displaced by the Truth of Jesus and God’s Word to them. Their own testimony was that they were able to weigh out the stories of the past that were empty and vague and continually changing in detail to the written word of God, newly translated into their heart language. They were able to present this even as they taught their own people in their own churches in their own context. They were able to impress on me some ideas that had not yet impacted my thinking … they knew that their sancutary didnt need, chairs or carpeting or a sound system or A/C or even walls that went all the way up to the ceilings. They knew this church was theirs to maintain, and if the missionaries had started with all that there would be no way to maintain it simply because that is not what they do. So the wisdom in the thatch roof, four post cornered, dirt floored, half walled worship center was pricisley the thing that fit the culture of these people! The teachers were so humble and although the role could produce the idea of a ‘Big Man’ they constantly downed themselves and upped Christ. This was no pomp or pride simply humble men teaching Gods word in their heart language. These believers also took on the role of discipling our family in a physical way to. They taught us what is takes for the average family to survive in the jungle. And the work is hard. I kept thinking (especially after the guy’s axe skipped off the tree and cracked his shin to the bone, then tied a shirt around it and kept chopping) the work that these people encounter on a day to day show the curse that God pronounced on mankind ‘by the sweat of your brow’….
Yet as believers now they took it all in stride. To the point they even took out of their days of finding and harvesting food to help us with Tok Pisin, trusting that God would provide as the work of teaching us language and sendig us out to another tribe was a task on them that was more important than even their ‘daily bread’. The time wasn’t always encuraging especially as we encountered jungle rashes, surgery on Lauren’s leg, swollen eyes, Cellulitis, Infections, hard work, long hikes, no facebook and a combined hundreds of mosquito bites. Yet the Lord was always there to come alongside us and point to the craziest testimonies of men and women of the Jungle experiencing Grace simply because some people responded in obedience to the call of all Christians to ‘Go and make disciples!’. All of it came into perspective in those moments, the ones where we seemed furthest from anything or anyone familiar and comfortable. The result total trust that this is completely worth it. And, as we daily consider the cost we are humbled to be here doing this type of a work!
Thank you for sending us.
In Christ,
Justin for the Rees Family

Going to the Jungle

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry on Oct 2nd, 2011 | Discuss This Post

We arrived in YY (I can only give initials for the safety of the missionaries here) to the reception of a few dozen believers greeting us in (from what I hear) a very toned down culturally appropriate greeting. They gave us all flower necklaces kind of like a lea that would get in Hawaii. Anyway the ladies went right for the kids and Lauren and the guys helped us unload the stuff we brought in for the next 2 months. We got a tour of the village and it was pretty overwhelming. The people are amazingly friendly and seem to want to help us in our orientation. The houses the people live in vary in size but are all essentially the same design and materials used. They are houses built on a post platform with 100% bush materials… A bark floor called limbum, walls made kind of with a log cabin feel, a leaf roof, and even doors and cut out windows. Although it is definitely jungle here the community seems to do a great job keeping living areas and footpaths clear of the overgrowing bush. We cannot wait to post more pictures and stories of our experiences so keep watching!!!

Going Tribal

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry on Sep 27th, 2011 | Discuss This Post

We are preparing to leave to go live in the Jungles of Papua New Guinea. We will be there for 7 weeks, which consequently is the time we’ve been been in PNG thus far. We hope to finish our study if the Tok Pisin Language, get an accurate picture of tribal life, and hopefully encourage a missionary team and the Tribal Believers they have led to the Lord as this location has an established and growing Church. This Church Planting process in this location started about 8 years ago and the Church was born only a few years ago as the first believers came to know Jesus. They have been met with intense persecution but have decided to tak on the task of orienting us to the bush! Isn’t that crazy to think that there are Tribal Brothers and Sisters who will help us as we continue our training? Please pray for our time and follow our updates!

Tribal Tour- Muldoon, Texas

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry on May 1st, 2011 | Discuss This Post

Because of the shenaniganz of the mechanic and those lead-on conversations regarding our car we were delayed and had to cancel preaching in Muldoon on Easter. But we were still determined to see the folks there at one of our sending churches, Muldoon Baptist Church. When we arrived we were so full of joy to see our friends Will and Megan Martin and their kids Eli and Liela. This family is amazing and their faithfulness to the Lord and what He has called them to spurs us on to obedience. We got some sweet time of fellowship with them, and Will asked if we would like to share with the youth there on Wednesday evening. We love every aspect of that Church and were stoked to get a shot at talking to their kids about taking Jesus’ love, mercy and salvation to those who’ve never heard because of no witness in their language. So the next night we got to show a very cool video from some friends, Brian Holmquist and Mark Woodard in PNG. The kids love it and they even spent some time asking really cool questions. After hanging out we all went out and played soccer. Knowing we had a long drive ahead of us we started for our car saying goodbye to all the folks in between. One man came up to me and asked us to follow him to his house a few miles away. There we saw his wife and met his brand new baby boy. He shared it was his wife and his desire to be a part of tribal church planting. As they had supported us in the past we thanked them for their faithfulness. In his humble way he threw and envelope at me and said “this is for you guys, do what you might need to, by a steak dinner or something!”. After giving them hugs and saying goodbye we headed for the Dallas area. On the drive, feeling overwhelmed at the task that lay before us and a moment of unbelief I was doubting whether we were going to get our recommended support level up and be ready to go to the field, Lauren opened the envelop only to start crying. This family had made up the 50% of our support we were missing that month in a single gift. It rocked us hard. And, spoke directly to our hearts at that moment. God knowing our frailty even this far in the game brought the encouragement we needed in this small way. Erin and Kelsey, thank you. You truly will be in the Jungle loving on people and you will do it from the front porch of your home. We cannot wait to introduce you to the hearts of Tribal men, women and children one day. Thank you for you prayers and your sacrificial giving. We love you all.

Tribal Tour- Las Crucas, New Mexico

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry on Apr 30th, 2011 | Discuss This Post

Last night we found ourselves in light of God’s crazy love and Grace as intimately as He could have revealed it. As if our time leading up to getting a vehicle to use wasn’t enough our Faithful Father yet again blew away our expectations and encouraged our hearts simultaneously.

Let’s back up a night. Our first night on the road, deep into the evening we realized we weren’t going to be able to charge through, like trips in the past. We had two kids now and the restlessness they experienced each night would translate to rough days for us. So we stopped in Blythe, CA. We stayed in a hotel and let the kids sprawl out on a bed, have a continental breakfast, and swim in the morning. It made for an easy day of travel later.

Back to New Mexico story. Knowing we needed to give our kids a restful evening we made the decision to stop yet again. Rolling into the hotel drive way a few minutes to midnight I went to book a room. As Joe, the attendant was asking for my info: a Simi Valley, Ca address and a Texas id. I found I was the perfect candidate for his next comment and question. “You must travel a lot, what do you do?”. Normally jumping at the chance to answer this comment, I paused wrestling in my own mind. Knowing Lauren and two fussy kids were in the car and thinking he just wanted to sell me a choice hotels credit card I hesitated to answer. But a witness in my own conscience testifying ‘be faithful’…
I laid it it out the whole bit, Bible translator, church planter, learn an unwritten language, work with and indigenous people group in a remote rain forrest, language analysis, medical work, make an alphabet, do a community development project, teach them how to read and write their own language, teach how to teach each other to read and write, teach foundationally through the Bible, present Christ for the first time ever in History to them, translate scripture, disciple them and see a healthy mature church raised up among them for the next 30 years of our lives…
His response floored me. “No way” he said, “wait right here I am going to get my manager.”
So here comes David the manager and Joe says tell him what you told me. Not knowing what God was doing I started yet again. When I finished, he said, “do you have a card?” I ran to the car to get a prayer card and ministry portfolio, only to have an anxious Lauren say, “what it going on?”
My response was as honest as could be, “I have no idea, just hold on a minute longer”. Returning back inside David explained to me that he wanted to be a part of our ministry and he wanted to give us his friends and family rate on hotels rooms this night and for the duration of the trip! He hooked us up intending to provide a break on rooms saving us hundreds of dollars during this trip. To Joe and David, love you guys. Thanks for your desire to be in the jungle and be there by sending us. The body of Christ is a cool organism that enables just that type of partnership.

We Had No Car!

Posted by Justin Rees in Ministry on Apr 28th, 2011 | Discuss This Post

Our departure was scheduled and our speaking engagements set. We had spent the required $1600 to our super reliable Saturn Vue ready for our upcoming long road trip. The day after receiving it from the mechanic we had a complete Transmission failure. After getting the preliminary diagnoses and the cost of repair somewhere in the ballpark of $5000 we realized the Lord was gearing us up for an interesting next few months. With about 9 days till our leaving we began to seek the Lord’s wisdom on what we should do. After deciding against spending the money to fix the car, the mechanic giving us ‘his cost’ to fix it and then deciding again to fix it for the $2000 he said he could do it for, so we waited. And, waited. And, waited. Until he finally told us he couldn’t find a part. So our planned date came and went. As we were beginning to feel bummed, a quote from a teacher of ours came to mind. “Man devises a way and God guides his steps”- R.Bruce. So our plan led us to facebook, text messaging, and lots of emails. And, you know what the Lord provided a car. In fact it was a Saturn Vue. It had all the room we needed for packing for the long (now) 6-7 week long road trip, we were calling our Tribal Tour. A big thanks to David and Crystal for their hearts for the lost Tribal groups of this world. We love you guys!
