What do you call 21 mattresses, 8 bunk-beds?

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

We called it home for the last 7 weeks.  Our family stayed in one of the rooms in the building that had 8 bunk beds in it and 16 mattresses.  We borrowed some from other rooms in order to complete “construction” of our home.  It is amazing all the ways a bunk and a mattress can be used.

I thought I would share a short video of the camp where we stayed in Oklahoma for the Cherokee Practicum.  Check out our video of where we were staying.  Hopefully it gives you a little better idea of what life was like in Tahlequah, OK.  We are in Missouri now for a week and then we spend two weeks in North Carolina during which Jenny will be working on the write up of her findings.

Parent’s Night Out in Tahlequah

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

We are so blessed by the team that we are with here in Oklahoma for the Cherokee Practicum.  This last Thursday night the singles and marrieds without children sent all of us parents WITH children on a date night.  What a great time.  The kids were well cared for and had a great time while Jenny and I had a chance to get out JUST THE TWO OF US.  We went to the East Buffet and to see a movie.  It was AWESOME!  Here is a pic of us before going out and the nice surprise we came home to.

Why am I always so surprised

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Praise the Lord, He has blessed us with a WONDERFUL place to stay when we move to Wisconsin in early November.  This is obviously one of the things that we are concerned about as a family thinking about moving… a place to move into. :) He continues to provide for us, and come through over and over again…and yet so many times we are surprised when He does.  Like our housing situation for Wisconsin: we were unsure of how it would all work out, and the Lord allowed us to rent a place in the SAME neighborhood where we lived before leaving for training with New Tribes.  We will actually be like 3 blocks from where we used to live.  What a treat for us as a family experiencing so much transition and new living situations to be able to move somewhere familiar.  On top of that the Lord worked it out so we are blessed with AMAZING rent for the area, a lower security deposit, flexible term on the lease so that we can move on to French study as soon as we are ready, 3 bedrooms, and the list goes on.

I will post some pictures of our new place when we get settled.

Lego People…. a valuable Language Learning Tool

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Saturday, September 19th, 2009

We thought you might enjoy a sneak peak into one of our language helper sessions that we go to as part of our Cherokee Practicum.  We spend 2 hours a day with our language helper learning more about the Cherokee language.

One of the important facets of analyzing a language is the ability to determine how verbs or action words are constructed.  In some languages the word for “we” that excludes the person listening to the conversation is different from the word for “we” that includes the listener.  Using Lego People can be a big help in setting up these scenarios so that Jenny and I as well as Ord (our language helper) understand what we are looking for.

Please pray that we will be able to make the most of our language helper sessions and that the Lord would keep the lines of communication open.

Cherokee Nation Celebration

Chrokee Nation Celebration Powwow

We attended a part of a powwow, a cornstalk shoot, and an ani Keetoowah dance this weekend.  There annual celebration of the Cherokee nation was this weekend and so we were able to join in and get to learn a little bit more about their culture.

We ended up learning that the Cherokee don’t have much to do with Powwow’s that is more to do with the plains Indians…but we did have an “Indian taco” that night which was served on Cherokee Fry bread…  It was still a neat experience for us to be able to attend the Powwow.

This morning the boys and I went to a cornstalk shoot together.  They shoot at a stack of cornstalks and you get points based on the number of stalks you penetrate with your arrow.  For the younger ages there is a time limit, and for the older groups were games to 50 points.

We were able to attend the Ani Keetowah dance with our language helper and his wife.  That was a good time to be with our helper and develop our relationship with him.  After the festivities we went out to dinner with him and his wife.

Getting to know our Language Helper

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

This was our first week of the Cherokee practicum and we feel like it has gone well.  The goals for this week were to get to know our language helper, warm up our ears and pencils to the sounds of the Cherokee language, do some TPR (total physical response) exercises to learn some words in Cherokee, get some practical expressions in Cherokee that we can use on a regular basis in our language helper sessions.

First of all, praise the Lord we have a wonderful language helper and he only lives 4 minutes away.  You can hardly beat that.  :)

Our schedule this last week:

  • Breakfast at 7:30
  • Language helper session 9-11 AM, leaving our kids with the Whites
  • 11-12:30 Jonathan processing the audio recordings and pictures and Jenny watching the kids
  • 12:30 Lunch and then lunch cleanup crew for either Jenny or I (White’s leave for language session before lunch so we have 8 kids for lunch )
  • One of us processes data from our session and the other one watches the 8 kids until 3:30 or 4 PM
  • 5:30 is dinner and then one of us is on dinner cleanup

We have been asking for prayer for the kids to adjust well to our time here in Oklahoma. Thank you for praying. There is so much to be thankful for in this area.

  • The place we are staying has a wonderful cement slab that the kids REALLY enjoy playing on and riding their bikes on.
  • There is another family here with 4 children close to our kids ages and they are getting along wonderfully
  • We were able to coordinate our language helper sessions with the other large family and so we take turns watching all 8 kids
  • Did I mention the 8 kids are getting along remarkably well
  • The kids have built a “fort” outside that they are REALLY enjoying

Setting up “house” in Oklahoma

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Sunday, September 6th, 2009

We arrived in Oklahoma and started setting up our “house” here for the next 7 weeks.  Hope you enjoy the pictures of us setting up our house here.  We told the kids we would be living in a “fort” for the next 7 weeks.  They really like their room a lot.

We are pretty well settled in now and getting into our routine here more and more each day.  Thank you so much for praying for us.

Cherokee Starts Tomorrow

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Sunday, August 30th, 2009

We are settled into our little room for our time here in Oklahoma.  We went to church today at a Cherokee church and were going to eet our language helpers for the next 7 weeks.  Things did not go exactly according to plan, but it looks like we have a language helper for Tuesday lined up.

Tomorrow we spend the day reviewing Phonetics and going over what we will be up to for the next 7 weeks.

Next time I get online I will be prepared to upload photos of our “fort” as we are calling it, built out of matresses and bunk bed frames.

Please pray for us as we jump into this totally new schedule with our family.  Trading childcare with another family, language helper sessions, cleaning crews, cooking crews, team meetings, data entry and so much more.  Thank you for standing with us in prayer.

On the Road to OK

Loaded to up to our eyeballs on the way to Oklahoma

Loaded to up to our eyeballs on the way to Oklahoma

We had an awesome time at the MTC and now we head off tomorrow morning to see some friends in Oklahoma before going to Tahlequah on Friday.  It is hard to believe we are already on our way to Ling Practicum in Oklahoma.

We had so much stuff to take with us so that we can completely setup house when we arrive in Oklahoma to 4 bare walls. :)  We never thought it would all fit. We even had some willing volunteers to take some things down for us…but Jenny worked her magic and got it all in.

Prayer

Please pray for the kids – this is yet another transition for them…and for us.

Praise

We had such a great time here in Missouri reconnecting with friends from our time here in the training.  We all wish we could move back in. :)

Moving, traveling, and quality education …

Jenny Teaching Emmanuel and Elena in the "Garage School House"

Not only will our children need quality education and care during the next few months and years of transition, they will need the same quality education while we are engaged in tribal ministry.

What a blessing that the MK Care and Education Department, located right here on campus in Missouri, provides home school support as well as international/MK school information and resources. Just last week I was able to attend a home school workshop held here, in order to gain more home school tips & resources. I browsed curriculum, learned tips & tools, and gained valuable insight from parents who have already successfully home schooled their children while ministering overseas.

Please thank the Lord with us for this support the Lord has provided, and be in prayer as we prepare to home school Emmanuel and Elena during the 2009/2010 school year during travel and transition.

Practical Skills Training

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Thursday, November 20th, 2008

We thoroughly enjoyed our class in Practical skills. It is amazing how a few adjustments in how you live can change your entire schedule and perspective on how to do “life.” During the entire 2 weeks of the course we practiced Simple Living, which basically meant simulating what it might be like to live in a remote location where all the conveniences we enjoy here are not available. It is amazing for what lights out at 9:00 PM does for your sleep schedule. :) We actually enjoyed doing dishes by “hand” and found that our kitchen was actually cleaner than usual. Some of the other guidelines were:

  • No Internet Access except for homework assignments and financial matters
  • Trips off campus limited to class assignments, emergencies, or doing ministry (outreach)
  • No microwaves, dishwashers or Televisions
  • Limit access to email to 1/2 hour per day per family

    Ordering Supplies By Two-Way Radio
As part of practical skills we had to plan a menu for the two weeks in order to compile a supply list. A few days into the class, groups were paired up to take each other’s supply orders for the entire time of practical skills. Using two-way radios to communicate, our groups exchanged orders then elected 2 brave souls from each group to do the shopping for the other team. The purpose of this was to help prepare us for living in remote locations when this will be the main way we receive our supplies. It also helps us learn how to communicate clearly to the supply buyer who has to try to buy what we are asking for. It is clear to us…but maybe not so clear to him. Our order turned out well, and it was great preparation for what may well be necessary on the mission field.
    Scratch Cooking and Meal Planning
As part of the scratch cooking time the husbands had to prepare two of the meals from scratch. I made Granola for breakfasts and Cincinnati Chili and some biscuits. During one of our classes I, Jonathan, made two loaves of bread from scratch and they actually turned out.
Jenny is already very skilled in cooking and even cooking from scratch, but they had asked us to stretch ourselves during this week of scratch cooking. Jenny made pasta, which she used in a YUMMY pumpkin ravioli. She also made Enchilada’s from scratch meaning she made the Tortillas from scratch.
    Weekend “Camping” without a Tent
The adventure got into full swing over the weekend while living in a shelter made from a tarp. Living in a tent as a family for a few weeks at a time is still a reality in some areas NTM serves.
We received a healthy does of reality complete with bugs to simulate a jungle-like experience. The area that we along with another family chose to setup our shelters in abounded with ticks and chiggers.
    Some other things we covered

  • Compass and GPS Exercises during our Weekend outing
  • Learning to use a Pressure Cooker
  • Small Engine Theory
  • Chain Saw maintenance and falling trees
  • Hair cutting
  • Plumbing basics
  • Building skills
  • Boats and outboard motors
  • Basic motorcycle maintenance

New Outreach Team… Same God at Work

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Tomorrow our team will be headed out to the jail again, but this time with our new team. Dave and Jared graduated towards the end of last year and one of our team members has a brand new baby. The Lord has blessed us with Joel and Evie who have joined our team. I am looking forward to what the Lord will do tomorrow.

It has been good to get back to the county jail this semester of training. I always feel nervous and inadequate for the task, but it is comforting to know that God has a plan for the men and women in the county jail and He is allowing us to be a part of His plan.

Last week I was able to spend some time with a man who I will call “Joe” who has been at the county jail since I started going there for outreach last fall. In the past Joe has not been that interested in talking at all. This week the Lord really opened the door for us to spend some time talking. The Lord seems to be working on drawing Joe to Himself. Please pray for Joe that he would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. God is working through you here in the county jail. Thank you for being a part of the team.
