Apparently a Party is in Order

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Yesterday when I arrived home,  Jada came to the front door when I rang the door bell.  I did not have my keys with me and needed to have someone unlock the door.  Jada didn’t have any keys, but she had some exciting news.  Our front door has steel bars over a glass window that swings open.  She opened the glass and told me that we need to have a party because she had a loose tooth.  Later in the afternoon she was doing some artwork and brought me some scraps of paper she had cut off of her artwork.  Apparently tickets are required to get into this exclusive event to celebrate the fact that she has a loose tooth.  Tonight she could not handle it any longer and had Mom “help” the tooth out so the tooth fairy could come.  If you are on Facebook already you may have seen these photos, but I will put the album here as well to go along with the post.  If you click on the pictures they will get bigger and you can use your arrow keys to look through the photos in the album.

Celebrating Elena’s 8th Birthday

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

We really enjoyed celebrating Elena’s 8th Birthday last month. I shot a few pictures of her opening some of her presents on her actual Birthday. A school day/night is not the best time for a party, so we waited on the celebration with friends until this weekend. We hope you enjoy the photos we took of our celebration!

While our fall festivities didn’t include our usual trip to the pumpkin farm or romp in the leaves, they did include a lot of fun! At Emmanuel & Elena’s school, the senior class put on an evening of fun events and good food!

Getting ready to blow out the candles

With all of our different moves, it seems that we make them before August when Emmanuel’s birthday is, so he usually gets to be the first one to celebrate another year of life in our new context.

Thank you so much all of you who have been and are praying for our family.  Part of adjusting to our life here in Senegal is to build new friendships.  Emmanuel having friends to invite to his birthday is a direct answer to your prayers for friends for each of us.  Please continue to pray for us as we build relationships here in Senegal.

Since we have been here, apparently certain little eyes have been watching what is going on with life and how things work here in Senegal.  I thought you would enjoy this picture of our girls integrating in the culture!

Time with Family before Departing for Senegal

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

We were so blessed to be able to have time with our families before departing for Africa.  We spend some precious time with the our family, Jenny’s side, in North Carolina after leaving Quebec.  We enjoyed so much being together and it was incredibly difficult to leave.

God allowed us to coordinate a reunion with the Roundy side of our family in northern Wisconsin from 3 different continents (including the us in the US of course).  It was so great to be together as family and catch up before our departure for Africa.  We all enjoyed driving the ATV’s, swimming in the lake and just plain being together as family.   The Jones were kind enough to let us stay in their place in Northern Wisconsin.

Kids club our first Saturday here

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Thursday, August 11th, 2011

We had the privilege of going to a kids club with our family at one of the churches here in the area. Thought you might enjoy some pictures of the kids enjoying kids club here in Senegal!  The kids broke up into three groups.  Two of the groups were taught in Wolof, a language of wider communication that kids know before going to school and learning French.

Yellow Fever Vaccine

James, Jada and Mom at the Hospital

As we get closer and closer to our departure date, we are making our most valiant attempt at crossing all of our T’s and dotting all of our I’s.  One of the items on the list is to get properly vaccinated against whatever diseases may await our family upon arrival in Senegal.  One of the “biggies” in Africa to be concerned about is Yellow Fever. In fact, depending on what country it is in Africa, if you arrive at the port of entry and do not have your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certification card showing you have been vaccinated, you may be ushered into a vaccination area and receive the vaccine on the spot. Wohoo! A Package in the mail

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Sunday, October 24th, 2010

A few weeks ago we were so excited when we checked our mail and saw that we had a package waiting for us at the Boni Soir (Canada Post outlet near us). We got coats on the family after the kids got home from school and picked up our package.  Below you can see some pictures of the kids and us opening up the package.  We are so thankful for the wonderful team of partners the Lord has put together to pray for, support and encourage us.  Thank you LORD!  (just recognizing now that my pictures are out of order, but…hey that will make it more exciting.  It is like a puzzle. :)

First Day of School

First Day of School

First Day of School

Thank you so much for your prayers for our family and all the adjustments we have been making.  Today the kids had a good first day at school and made it onto the right bus to get back home!  They actually have a French speaking (bi-lingual) home room teachers so that should help them with learning French.  I will bet they are going to learn French way sooner than we will.  They were excited about their lunch boxes and packing a lunch today.  James and Jada were picked up in time for lunch with us, so they were kinda bummed that they did not have the chance to “pack a lunch”.

Please continue to pray for us as we adjust and as Jenny and I dive into our French Studies!

Pics of Emmanuel’s 8th Birthday

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Emmanuel celebrated his 8th birthday here in Quebec at a beautiful park.  We had such a great time and were able to invite our new neighbors who are also here to study French with us.  They have two boys who are 7 and 6 years old.  They have all really enjoyed having each other to hang out with and play with.

We are so blessed to have Emmanuel as part of our family and it was GREAT to celebrate his big day together.  Please pray for wisdom for Jenny and I as we are blessed with the opportunity to parent our 4 children.

Tears are “floating”

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

This last weekend we had the priviledge of celebrating the wedding of Misty ( Jenny’s Sister),  and Andy.  Our daughter spent the first several minutes of the wedding ceremony crying because she was going to miss her “mia moo”, Aunt Misty.  It is going to be hard to be away from the family, but it was so awesome to be a part of their special day, to have family in town as well.  Sunday we said our goodbyes, which was hard.  We have noticed that the kids have been crying a good bit, which is healthy but also a sign of the sadness that we all feel as we prepare to leave our friends and family behind.

We recently have had a lot of rain, which has resulted in flooding in some areas.  Earlier today I was going to take the kids to a park while we waited for  the rest of the family that were at some appointments.  We had to make a u-turn in the parking lot because the park was flooded.   Later on in the day I had to run some errands and took Jada with me.  We were driving in the car and we passed a Park.  Jada said that park isn’t floating, translation = flooded.  I told her that the park we had tried to visit was the one that had flooded, not all parks.  She said that it was the one we had been to one time, literally it was one time.  Anyhow…as I was driving I looked back at her to see tears rolling down her cheeks.  When I asked why she was crying she said it was because the park was “floated”.  These days we find ourselves crying without always knowing the real reason we are crying.  It did earn her a hot “choco” chocolate and a sticker at the coffee shop afterwards. :)

Caterpillar to moth project

Posted by Jonathan and Jenny on Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Below are some pictures of the process of watching some “cute” caterpillars becoming moths.  This is the first time that we have been through the whole process with the kids.  We went camping in late may and Jenny took the opportunity to collect some caterpillars off our our tent and bring them home for this fun project with the kids.  Enjoy the pictures below.  You can use the arrows below the pictures to take a look, or you can click on the link at the top of the page to go to our photos page. We even borrowed a caterpillar field guide from the library and found out that we had Eastern Tent Caterpillars. It was hard to identify the caterpillars but a slam-dunk to identify the moths. Seven Eastern Tent Caterpillars “hatched” from their cocoons into little brown moths.

We thank the Lord for His creation and getting to share in the wonder of transformation!
