John & Margaret entered training with NTM in 1977. They subsequently served on staff at the New Tribes Language Institute, in Camdenton, MO, John as an instructor and Margaret as camp hostess and then camp printer from 1981 to 1986.
In 1986 they joined two other families to open up a new field for NTM in Guinea, West Africa. They ministered in Guinea until 1995 with John as field chairman and Margaret in a number of support roles.
1997 found the Birkemos back at the New Tribes Language Institute. Initially they both served as instructors in the area of language and culture acquisition. Margaret continued in that capacity until 2006. John joined the NTLI administration team in 1998, became chairman of the Insitute in 2000 and held that position until 2005.
They are currently serving on the development team of the Missionary Training Center at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Their ministry involves public relations and partnership development on behalf of the Missionary Training Center.
John & Margaret spend 4 months of each year working with church and mission organizations in Ghana and Nigeria, West Africa, training church planters and missionary candidates. They also are involved in mobilizing Christians there to get involved in missions.
