Davis Photo Journal

Take a trip to the Philippines with us through our Photo Journal emails.

——————————————————-

Joel had his check ride – and now has his official Philippines pilot’s license!!

Now he can start learning NTM’s tribal airstrips. In just a few weeks we will have taken over the flight program on Mindanao – doing all the flying, flight following, flight scheduling, and some bookkeeping.

My (Missy’s) job on the HF radio has been taken to new levels this week… normally I am only on there when the guys are flying. But now our missionaries’ internet satellite has floated off into outer space (literally), which means they have NO internet in their tribal areas anymore.

This has drastically changed communication with them- normally they can schedule flights and ask for supplies via email, but not anymore!  It’s all through me on the radio. You can pray for me as I do this new job- that we will have CLEAR communication through the static :) and that I will keep all the messages and lists straight, passing them on to the right people.

Family update… we had an eventful few weeks. First, both of our girls got sick with some kind of flu/fever. Ryley’s went away after a few days, but Camryn’s fever continued on and on- for almost 2 weeks. Long story short… the Lord led us to a great doctor and it turned out that Camryn was fighting pneumonia and a UTI. Poor baby! Once we got the correct antibiotics, she improved quickly.

This picture was taken BEFORE the antibiotics kicked in… can you believe it? Does she look sick to you??  She had lots of times where she played and laughed and we would never have known she was sick if we didn’t feel her forehead!

On a recent weekend away, we got visit a zoo. I was definitely a little nervous about this crazy-eyed monkey….I think he was a few fries short of a Happy Meal. He kept this overly-enthusiastic grin the whole time we looked at him.  I was glad for the glass between us!

Next family news… Ryley graduated from Kindergarten!  Here she is in her construction paper graduation hat. We finished a bit late since we had a furlough in the middle of the school year (which I think included 6 pack & moves, but who’s counting??)… so now we’ll take a few weeks off before we tackle 1st grade. She also officially just lost her first tooth! Where did our baby go??

We are really excited to be helping out here on Mindanao with the aviation program.  Please keep praying for our family as we keep settling in to our new home, and as we learn new aspects of our jobs here every day. We feel blessed to be here. Thank you for being on our team!

Missy eating an Elephant Ear

Missy eating an Elephant Ear

I took missy to our county fair here in Sarasota the other night just the two of us for a “romantic date”.  I know….I go a little over the top sometimes but she is worth every penny =)  Anyhow, we were just sitting there enjoying some nice greasy food and we spotted a friend from church so we said hey, and it had been a long time since we had seen each other so we caught up a bit and at the end she reaches in her pocket and pulls out a little white card and says, “my husband runs the fair so we get some extra perks and I think you missionaries should benefit from this as well.” She gave us a free pass to ride any and all the rides there at the fair!  We were so excited because we probably wouldn’t have paid to do any rides just because we knew they could get a bit expensive even though I really enjoy that “stomach in your throat feeling”.  (I guess that’s why I”m a pilot right?)  We were walking away from her and I turned to Missy and said, “wow, God blesses us in so many ways even riding rides at the fair”.  Anyhow, we had a blast riding whatever we wanted and after a couple hours we looked at the ticket prices for riding the rides we had just ridden and we realized that we rode about $70 worth of rides FOR FREE!  We just want to say thanks to all of you that bless us in so many ways…(supporting us regularly, sending us encouraging emails, telling us that you pray for us daily, and giving us free rides at the fair!) You are truly displaying love to us in so many creative ways and because of that love we feel blessed, encouraged, and supported so that we can stay in the Philippines doing what God has called us to do.  Thank you so much,   Joel for all of us

Bit Off More Than I Could Chew!

Posted by Joel and Missy Davis on Friday, April 30th, 2010

I played hookie last week from school to go with a friend of mine (Sonny) and his Filipino family to a popular volcano here.  What I didn’t realize was that I would get more than I bargained for with the cultural experiences that would follow.

This is one of the most interesting volcanoes I’ve ever seen, and as an missionary kid growing up, I’ve seen quite a few. This one is called Taal volcano, and it is a crater with a lake inside of it, with an island in the middle of the lake, with another crater inside the island, with a lake inside the crater, with an island in the middle of the lake.  Crazy to explain and even crazier to see with your own eyes! It is still an active volcano with geisers that spew hot air out along the 2 mile hike up the mountain. We had a great time boating across to the island, hiking up, and looking into the crater. Little did I know that the day of language and culture exposure was just beginning.

After we hiked up to the top of the volcano, we decided to go back to my friends house and hang out until his family and friends had a despedida (going away party) for him. He was leaving the next day to go back to the States, and it is Philippine tradition to throw a despedida party for him.  Little did I know that I would be trying those crazy types of food that you see on the show “Fear Factor”, but that was my fate.

Somehow Sonny talked me into trying “balut” which according to Wikipedia (which always has “stellar” information) means it is: a fertilized chicken egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that is boiled and eaten in the shell. CLICK HERE to watch our balut eating video.

You can tell by my face what I thought (actually, believe it or not, it wasn't that bad)

Trying Bagoong Alamang for first time (shrimp paste on unripe mango)

Before the night was through, I had eaten one balut, some unripe mango dipped in shrimp paste, and numerous other Filipino delicacies.  I also took place in the greatest Philippine pasttime……that’s right, Karaoke!  All in all, it was the best culture and language exposure time I’ve had since I’ve been here and it was so much fun to spend it with my good friend, Sonny and his family.  We had tons of fun, laughed a lot, and I kept all my food down, so it was quite a successful day =)

Davis Vehicle Project

Posted by Joel and Missy Davis on Thursday, November 26th, 2009

We have been here in the Philippines for almost 6 months already!  Can you believe it?

NTM asks that we use public transportation for our first 6 months here.

But now we are nearing the time that we can purchase our own vehicle for our family! We are excited to have our “own wheels” again not only to get us around in Manila, but also out of the city every once in a while!  We are excited to bless others with the use of it as well.

We are interested in purchasing a vehicle similar to this one. This one belongs to our friends here, and we have seen it be such a help and blessing to many missionaries here!
