Thank you for praying for my trip by land into one of our tribal locations this past week. I needed to go in by land because this airstrip has been damaged because of really heavy rains and earthquakes in the past few years. Our missionaries are coming back from furlough and they need to repair it so that they can live in the village and I can serve them with the airplane. I went to see it to get an idea of how bad the damage was – and talk over how to repair it with our missionary on the ground there.

Getting ready for the motorcycle part of our trip. In the end, we had 4 adults on this one bike. You can see a picture of that on our previous blog post.
It took me and a friend 4 days of travel round trip to get to the village and back home again, and it only would have been a 40 minute round trip flight! It was a good reminder that what we do with the airplane is vital to the health and safety of our missionaries, not to mention how much time and effort it saves them in the long haul. I got to see first hand how long and hard the travel can be into these villages in the mountains and it made me appreciate the airplane so much more.

This is the road into the village! This is the driest it ever gets. We had to get off the motorcycle about 30 times so the driver could get through areas like this.
On our first day of travel, we drove to a city near our home- about 3 hours away. Early the next morning, we drove an additional 3 hours by land to the end of the road. Then I saddled up with a local guy for a 4 hour trip by motorcycle the remainder of the way in.
It didn’t rain the day before we went in, and that is why it only took 4 hours on the motorcycle. My guide said that it almost always rains and it usually takes anywhere from 7-12 hours… so I got the best case scenario and it still made me hurt all over. It rained for about 20 minutes of my trip in and I got to see how slippery and nasty it can be. I totally understand why rain can double or triple the amount of time it takes to get in.
I had a great time with our missionary looking over the airstrip and talking about the repairs that are necessary. It looks like it will be a lot of work but it definitely looks repairable. When I showed up in the village there was a bulldozer and huge truck sitting there! I couldn’t believe my eyes because I couldn’t imagine how they got into the village after seeing how bad the trail was. It turns out that a logging company got them in there back when the trail was better and there they sit. I believe it is providence from the Lord because they will need the truck to go the 1 kilometer down the hill to get gravel and put it on the airstrip.

This is a picture of the airstrip after they stripped the grass off the top in order to lay down gravel. They had 200 people show up and they did this in one day. Amazing!
Please pray for our missionary and his 200+ tribal friends as they work hard over the month of April to get the airstrip repaired. They have a lot of work yet to go but I have full confidence that God will continue to go before them and provide what they need to get the job accomplished.
