The Law for the Israelites, not for the Siar
Last week’s teaching focused on Exodus 19 and 20, starting with the fact that the Law was God’s covenant requirement for his chosen people – the Israelites. The Siar were blown away to realize that A- they aren’t Israelites, and B- the Law was not intended for them as a rule of life nor as the means for salvation. It was the first time they had ever realized that the Israelites were indeed the literal offspring of Abraham and were an actual distinct ethnic group apart from all others. It was the first time that the Siar saw clearly, through genealogical evidence, that they were not a part of the nation of Israel, and it was the first time for them to understand the true intent and purpose of the Law. Understanding that the Law was given as a means to show man’s sinfulness for what it truly is in the light of God’s holiness, was indeed a massive shift from the worldview assumptions that the Siar had been living by for decades.
The team used a number of skits and illustrations to try to make these distinctions clear and understandable for them and they seemed to work well. One skit showed the faultiness of misinterpreting God’s word and misapplying texts that are not intended for you. Another was examples from the village life there to illustrate how effective the Law is at showing the sinfulness of man. We used a number of everyday examples of “bearing false witness” to try to clearly outline the fundamental principle of honesty and truth in all areas of life. This definitely hit the right chord with the Siar and they got a good laugh out of us missionaries acting out their lives in such great detail.
Our “Oscar Worthy” skits weren’t the greatest thing about this week though. The exciting thing was watching the overwhelming majority of the people completely embrace this new perspective on the Law. The real encouraging thing was listening to them recount what they had already learned and testify that God had already shown them so clearly that “law-living” and self effort would never restore them to God. They had already seen God make that point so clearly and they were already convinced that it could only be faith on God’s Promised One that would restore them back to God. They are already convinced that it MUST be God’s work and NOT their own that will redeem them back to God. Most are now waiting somewhat impatiently now for the revelation of this “Promised One”, and they are very excited to understand who He is and what He did to save them.
All of this sounds so good, but don’t be fooled; this teaching on the Law was not without incident. Some, who have been taught differently had difficulty with what was being taught, and publicly voiced their disapproval. As hard as it is to see those choosing to remain confident in the flesh to make them right before God, it did provide an opportunity for us to be gracious yet purposeful in our standing up against false teaching and heresy. We still pray that many of them will see the truth and allow God to expose their faulty thinking and believe in Him.

· Exodus 16, 17:1-6 – Israelities complaing once again, God providing food and water despite the Israelities.
· Exodus 19 – Preparation for God giving His law. God’s law is commonly misunderstood as something that we are to keep and the Siar struggle with this belief…please be praying.
· Exodus 20:1-11 – God giving His first four commandments to Israel.
· Exodos 20:12-17 – God giving commandments 5-10 to Israel.

Siar Prayer Requests
· Pray that the Siar would internalize the truth of God’s word. It is one thing to listen to God’s word but quite another to believe it to be true. Pray that they would believe in the character and nature of God and in His revealed Word.
· Pray that we would be allowing God’s love to shine through the Siar team to their Siar friends; that their lives would be a vivid example of God’s eternal love.
· Pray that the team would continue to depend on the Lord, as the danger of familiarity can at times breed a dependence on self. Now that they have been teaching for over a month and a half, some things have become routine, so please pray that they do not rest on themselves but find our source of life, strength, and clarity of mind in the Lord.
· Please also pray that the team would be sensitive and good listeners to their Siar friends. Pray that they would listen to what they are saying and believing, and from there graciously bring them back to God’s word.

This week’s teaching in Siar
This week’s teaching is Jacob and Esau, the life of Joseph, and God’s calling Moses. Please be praying that God would continue to show himself to the Siar people through these lessons, and that they would thereby see that they fall short of God’s standard of perfection and need the Redeemer.

Two Siar Believers!
Two of the Siar folk who help prepare the Bible lessons gave clear testimonies of faith in Christ alone as their Redeemer this week. Both of these guys, Amos and Sali, are further along in the lessons because they are helping the team prepare lessons that not only communicate truth, but also flow well in the Siar language. As Jonathan sat with them he realized that they were clearly sharing about Christ and His finished work on the cross for their sins. They both also shared that they now know that they can do nothing to received God’s free salvation, but that God gave it freely to them. Rejoice with us in the Lamb of God that died for Amos and Sali, and rose again to save them from the punishment of their sin. Isn’t God awesome!

An Exciting Week in Siar
Last week was an exciting week for the missionary team living in the Siar village. Thursday and Friday’s lessons really challenged the lives and worldview of their Siar friends. On Thursday, the people learned that God judges all sin, just as He did many years ago in Sodom and Gomorra. Many became convinced that they were no better than those who lived in those two towns and that God has the right to judge them of their sin. God was convicting them of their sin as He promised He would do (John 16:8). Then on Friday they heard the wonderful message of God providing a substitute for Isaac. I was again reminded of God’s wonderful character as He provided everything that Abraham and Isaac needed. Many were amazed at the love and grace of the Lord as He kept His promise to Abraham. Truly the picture of a perfect God lovingly and freely providing what a sinner needs.
