“Ms. Bechtel, you were going 85 in a 50.” Our 5-year wedding anniversary was off to an expensive start.

The police officer was kind enough to knock the offense down to 60 in a 50 km/h. It was on a fairly rural road, with homes only on one side of the road. The speed limit along there kept going from 80 km/h to 50 km/h and back, so I think he knew what he was doing, waiting for us at that particular spot.

Angie’s embarrassing moment was soon over-shadowed by one of Jason’s.

When we got to the hotel, we realized that when we had dropped Delena and Lorelei off at the sitter’s, that Jason had unpacked a little too much. Myelle’s bag was no longer with us. No clothes. No diapers. No snugli. Thankfully Angie had two outfits in Myelle’s diaper bag, which was still with us, and we were able to buy some diapers.

Embarrassing moments out of the way, we had a really relaxing two nights away in Wallaceburg, ON. Co-workers of ours, Wes and Brenda Dyck, were so kind to keep Delena and Lorelei for us.

While Angie’s favourite part about the hotel was the extremely large pool, Jason liked that our room came with supper one night, and breakfast both mornings!

On the way home to Durham, we were able to stop in and wish our mother’s a “Happy Mother’s Day” and do a little bit of shopping! Both Delena and Lorelei were thrilled to see us too! All said and done, it ended up being a very restful weekend, once we got beyond the shaky start.

We were getting down to the wire. The excitement was building. Financial gifts for my trip to Indonesia were beginning to come in. Even with our third child due to arrive the end of March, I was going ahead with my plans to be in Indonesia for two weeks the end of February. It hadn’t sunk in yet for Delena that I would be missing her birthday, the one that she has been talking about since forever — she is going to start school after she turns four, don’t you know!

As much as I wanted to go to Indonesia, as much as I wanted to be there for the Bible dedication, for a Bible I have helped prepare for the last two years, I didn’t have a peace that passes all understanding. I just didn’t have a peace.

So I put a condition on my trip. I wouldn’t travel alone. If the Lord didn’t provide someone to travel with me, I wouldn’t go. I approached one of my best friends. He wanted to come. His wife was okay with it. His work was okay with it. It was just a matter of the finances, for him and for myself.

While salvation is free, bringing the gospel to the unreached can be very expensive, especially when the people who need to hear live in hard-to-reach places. Our trip into the Lauje tribe will cost each of us more than $2,500. Not only do we have international flights to Jakarta, but domestic flights, and then renting a helicopter to fly into the tribe.

As we got down to the wire, needing to make some decisions and commitments, neither of us had a peace, but we pressed on. Why wouldn’t God want us to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration?

Then I got the call. An email actually. The decision to go or stay was not actually ours to make. The Bible translator learned from the printer that the Bibles won’t be ready in time. The Bible dedication has been postponed till April or May.

The relief I felt was quickly followed by regret and dread.

I was relieved that I didn’t have to say no. That I wouldn’t be seen as unwilling to trust God for the money. I was relieved that I wouldn’t have to make a hard choice between going and staying. But I also realized that I was very close to making a bad choice. Actually, I was very close to being disobedient. I didn’t have a peace with going, and I knew it.

So why didn’t I have a peace? Was it simply that the timing was off, and the Lord knew it? Was I just being told not to buy the tickets for February? Or am I not to go at all? I don’t know.

While the pressure is currently off, my friend and I still have to decide if we should move ahead with going to Indonesia in April. For both of us, the deciding factors will have changed. There will be no risk of me missing the birth of my 3rd child, but I will be leaving Angie with two preschoolers and a 4-week-old.

I covet your prayers. Not only that I would have a sense of the Lord’s leading, but that I would have the boldness to listen.

Okay, so it’s been awhile since we’ve posted anything on here. Thus, we’re taking you back to March! For Spring break, the girls and I headed down to Ohio to visit my cousin and her family. They have two little boys who, at the time, were 2 years old and 2 months old. Delena and the older boy had a blast playing together while the younger two tried not to get mauled by the older kids! My cousin and I thoroughly enjoyed having the WHOLE week together. We haven’t spent that much time together since before she and I hit the teen years! We had beautiful weather, thankfully, so we spent a lot of time at local parks keeping the kids busy and tiring them out. Check out the pictures on the web album.

A Baby Shower! As we posted earlier, my sister had a baby boy, so of course, being the wonderful aunt that I am, I had to host a shower. It was lots of work and lots of fun. I tried my hand at fondant icing for the first time and let’s just say that it’s a lot harder than it looks! Here’s a few pictures from the event.

Among our numerous weekend activities have been two weddings. We went to one in April for a former co-worker of Jason’s down in Port Colborne. We also decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary early (May 6 was 4 years!) and got a hotel for the night. We played tourist Friday night at Niagara Falls. It’s a good thing it wasn’t our only opportunity to see the falls as they were mostly covered with fog!

We were also at a wedding this past weekend for a friend of Jason’s from college. This second we were a little more involved with as Jason was the best man! Jason went down Thursday night and stayed through until Saturday night. I joined him for the rehearsal and dinner on Friday evening and then we parted ways for the night since they didn’t invite me to the bachelor party! I, on the other hand, got to stay the night at a friend’s house from college and stayed up until 1am talking with her. Good thing the girls were with grandparents because I would have been way too tired to get up with them in the morning.

I joined Jason at the 3pm wedding. Thankfully it was inside with the touch snow in the air and the gale winds! The wedding went off with only minor glitches that an inside person would know about and I must say that Jason did the best “best man” job that I’ve ever seen!

It was great fun, as usual, but it was extra special for me because two of my very good friends from our time in training at NTMC were able to join us. One of the girls is on staff at our sister school in Missouri. She was able to come as our guest speaker and did a great job of getting us into the Word and opening up to each other. The second friend attended our church when she was in the training so I snuck her in! It was a bittersweet time as I had a fun time with her, but I’m going to miss her as her and her family head off to the Philippines this month! Her whole family actually came down for the weekend, so Jason and the girls were with the rest of her family.

Jason did well managing the whole weekend. He only had to go to ER once! The girls both got eye infections while I was gone, but Jason took it all in stride. They even had supper ready for us when we got home from the retreat!

Last Friday, even though I was watching three kids from NTM for the morning, I still managed to clean AND I made 2 pies and lemon squares in the morning before our friend, Annette, came in the afternoon for a visit. Annette arrived with some gifts for the girls and food for the adults. She played with the girls and chatted with me while I made supper. My brother Sean arrived in time for supper. We had chicken enchiladas with sweet potatoes in them…a new experience for Annette and Sean!

After supper we played Killer Bunnies with Delena (she mostly watched). Then we played until 9 when Jason went to bed. After that Annette and I pulled out the Christmas decorations. We managed to get lights and garland on the banister and the tree up before going to bed.

After a pancake breakfast, Annette and I went shopping for more Christmas lights, and of course got additional goodies.

Jason has been working diligently on the crawlspace and was able to finish it Saturday night. YEAH!!! He has pretty sore knees though!

Yesterday I was supposed to have another friend and her daughter for lunch, but thankfully they were sick and didn’t come. I still had Delena and Zach Masse, so while Lorelei slept, I let them help me make cookies–which makes it take a LOT longer!

Jason had the men’s Bible Study here last night. I went to the library really quick before it started, so Lorelei was left for a few minutes with all the guys. I don’t think she likes crowds or maybe just all the men scared her. Jason said she freaked right out, but she also had a bit of gas. BUT, she was totally fine the rest of the evening in the bedroom with me. It’s kind of weird being in your own house, but confined to one room! Oh yes, the other reason I don’t think she likes crowds is because she was perfectly happy in the corner of the living room ALONE when all the kids were here. I also stuck her in her crib for a bit and she stared at her star for probably 15 min. I checked to see if she was sleeping and she wasn’t!

Today I had Zach again, so we carved a pumpkin. It was my first time as an adult…it’s harder than it looks!
That’s our week,
Angie
