Lauje Tribal Bible Dedication Postponed

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

lauje baptismWe were getting down to the wire. The excitement was building. Financial gifts for my trip to Indonesia were beginning to come in. Even with our third child due to arrive the end of March, I was going ahead with my plans to be in Indonesia for two weeks the end of February. It hadn’t sunk in yet for Delena that I would be missing her birthday, the one that she has been talking about since forever — she is going to start school after she turns four, don’t you know!

As much as I wanted to go to Indonesia, as much as I wanted to be there for the Bible dedication, for a Bible I have helped prepare for the last two years, I didn’t have a peace that passes all understanding. I just didn’t have a peace.

So I put a condition on my trip. I wouldn’t travel alone. If the Lord didn’t provide someone to travel with me, I wouldn’t go. I approached one of my best friends. He wanted to come. His wife was okay with it. His work was okay with it. It was just a matter of the finances, for him and for myself.

While salvation is free, bringing the gospel to the unreached can be very expensive, especially when the people who need to hear live in hard-to-reach places. Our trip into the Lauje tribe will cost each of us more than $2,500. Not only do we have international flights to Jakarta, but domestic flights, and then renting a helicopter to fly into the tribe.

As we got down to the wire, needing to make some decisions and commitments, neither of us had a peace, but we pressed on. Why wouldn’t God want us to be a part of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration?

Then I got the call. An email actually. The decision to go or stay was not actually ours to make. The Bible translator learned from the printer that the Bibles won’t be ready in time. The Bible dedication has been postponed till April or May.

The relief I felt was quickly followed by regret and dread.

I was relieved that I didn’t have to say no. That I wouldn’t be seen as unwilling to trust God for the money. I was relieved that I wouldn’t have to make a hard choice between going and staying. But I also realized that I was very close to making a bad choice. Actually, I was very close to being disobedient. I didn’t have a peace with going, and I knew it.

So why didn’t I have a peace? Was it simply that the timing was off, and the Lord knew it? Was I just being told not to buy the tickets for February? Or am I not to go at all? I don’t know.

While the pressure is currently off, my friend and I still have to decide if we should move ahead with going to Indonesia in April. For both of us, the deciding factors will have changed. There will be no risk of me missing the birth of my 3rd child, but I will be leaving Angie with two preschoolers and a 4-week-old.

I covet your prayers. Not only that I would have a sense of the Lord’s leading, but that I would have the boldness to listen.

Missouri and back

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Sunday, December 12th, 2010

We made it back safely from our 1.5 week trip to Missouri. We had lots of stops along with way and back which made it nice for the girls. Our longest day on the road was 10 hours and I think the girls might have done the best that day, but I’ll explain that later.

Our first stop, after crossing the border on Friday, was lunch with my Uncle and cousins for a yummy lunch and leg stretch. Then on to his daughter’s house, in Ohio, where we stayed for the weekend. We celebrated a very late Canadian/early American Thanksgiving! Delena and Lorelei had fun playing with their two boys as they are all fairly close in age.

Sunday found us in the car and heading downtown St. Louis, MO. Jason has a couple cousins here so we stopped in for supper to see everyone and stayed overnight. On Monday we went with Jason’s cousin and her 3 girls to the St. Louis Zoo. It was a blast. With the cooler weather –quite warm for us Canadians –the animals were pretty active. Jason’s cousin goes there all the time and she kept commenting on all the things we were seeing that she had never seen. I think my favourite was the hippo that we could see through the glass –above and below the water. He kept swimming in circles for us. Another favourite was the orangutans that were sitting RIGHT beside the glass. Delena leaned in closer to see them and they leaned towards her. Boy, did she jump! LOL

When the girls were good and tired, we hopped in the car for our last drive to the Missionary Training Center in Camdenton, MO. We arrived for just in time for a delicious supper with our good friend, Sherry, who was in missionary training with us. We spent the next four days with her and she really spoiled us! Jason was able to sit in on some partnership development classes and bounce ideas off the staff down there. I did some shopping and Jason even watched the girls for a full day while Sherry and I headed to the city!

The only low point of our stay there was waking up to find ‘bites’ on my hands and feet one morning! I had felt a couple in the night, but they were all over my hands and feet when I got up for breakfast. By the end of breakfast they had spread all up my arms and legs and even on the insides of my hands and feet! I realized then, that these were NOT bites, but some sort of allergic reaction. None of us could think what it might be, so Sherry called her nurse friend, who asked me a lot of questions and we finally figured things out. The week before our trip I’d had a chest infection and was put on antibiotics. It was day 9 (of 10) for taking those, but apparently that’s when a reaction will show up your first time. I’m now allergic to penicillin! I’m pretty sure I’ve been on it before, but strange things happen when you’re pregnant! So I was itchy for a few days, but it didn’t stop me from shopping!!!

We left MO on Saturday morning by 8am. The girls weren’t ready for breakfast before we left for our 10 hour drive, so I let them bring their breakfast in the car. We were maybe 10 minutes down the road when Lorelei threw up! I should mention that the roads leaving the training center are VERY curvy! So we stopped and cleaned her up. About 15-20 minutes later, Delena announced that she was going to be sick. Thankfully she’s done this a few times in the car before so we were prepared for her and she got it all neatly in a bag!!! YEAH! Note to self: don’t eat on the curvy roads! You’re probably wondering why, in my first paragraph I said that this was the best travelling day. Well, I gave them both Gravol after that and they slept until 11:30! We made a pit stop for the toilet and then ate snacks in the car. They played and were quite content until 3:30, which turned out to be 4:30 when we decided to actually stop for supper, because of the time change. After supper they watched a movie in the car (thanks to my cousin’s DVD player) and before we knew it, we’d arrived back in OH at my cousin’s once again!

We spent our second weekend with my cousin and her family and then left early Monday morning to head to ON! We had NO problem and no wait at the border which was wonderful so we were able to head straight to a friend’s place in St. Catharines for supper. Then we spent the next two days visiting friends in Port Colborne, our first home as a couple. We finally made it back home on the Wednesday and I spent Thursday, no, not putting stuff away, but putting up Christmas decorations!!!

August Email Update

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Thursday, August 5th, 2010

This summer has been filled with activities. To kick off the summer we took a day trip, as a family to Storybook Park in Owen Sound. We went with the Moms ‘n’ Tots group that I have been attending, from the Hanover Missionary church. Delena spent most of the day on rides with her friend, Caleb.

Vacation Bible School

The next big event was Avalanche Ranch VBS. Jason and I were both on the planning committee once again, so we’d been building up to this event for months. It finally came the week of July 12-16th. We had a profitable week with 39 kids registering and our highest day being 35 kids. I played the roll of the behind-the-scenes director and Jason was a group co-leader for the Gr. 5/6 group. We were quite pleased with the turn-out and everything ran very smoothly. One of the highlights of the week was the Thursday night family night. There was only one family missing from the group of kids attending for the week and some great conversations were had with unchurched families.

Home Project of the Summer

This month has been characterized by a deck for Jason. He is putting a deck on the back of our house from the second story (main level from the front). He’s never done something like this before, so it’s been weeks of planning and calculating and now, building. I’m so proud of him for sticking it out even when mistakes happened! It’s still not done, but it looks great so far!

Learning to Swim

Delena at her swimming lessonsAnother fun thing this month has been taking Delena to swimming lessons. It’s her first time and there are 5 kids in her little class with 2 instructors. The lessons are at the Durham wading pool, which is up to Delena’s chest almost, in the deep end. She’s done very well. She didn’t want to put her head under the water at all on the second day (which was their first time) but now she’s the only one who will do it without the instructor’s ‘help’. :) She’s good at floating on her back and will attempt to swim forward, but hasn’t quite figured out how to kick your legs, move your arms AND put your face in the water! Thursday and Friday of this past week she told the instructors that she “was tired of yessons”. Today she was wanting to do them again, so hopefully this long weekend was a long enough break for her and she can finish off this last week of lessons with a bang.

Lorelei Turns 1

Uncle Sean Bechtel sharing his birthday with Lorelei
Lorelei is so much fun these days. She celebrated her 1st birthday on July 4th with celebrations on the 1st and 4th of July. She is now walking everywhere and falling lots too. She has two teeth on the bottom (old news) and her two eye teeth on the top so it looks like little fangs. :) She enjoys playing with her big sister and especially with whatever big sister DOESN’T want her to play with! :)

Thanks again for all your prayers and a BIG thank you for everyone who financially helped us out this last month.

Family Outing to Storybook Park

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

After Jason got back from his conference in Indiana, we had the opportunity to go to Storybook Park.  I’ve been going to a Moms and Tots group for the last couple of months and as our last “hurrah” before the summer we all went to the park for the day.  Jason was able to join us, so it was a nice family outing.  Lorelei went on a few rides, but mostly enjoyed the swings.  Delena went on EVERY ride and enjoyed each one.  We also had a tag-along for the day — Delena’s friend, Caleb.  It was nice for Delena to have someone with whom to go on all the rides.  Of course, us parents supervised!  It was a good day because it was overcast.  It only rained a little around 2 and we didn’t even feel the earthquake! :)

Birthday’s Galore

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Among our weekend activities have been a few birthdays. This year we have been celebrating the birthdays in twos since it seems there are few weekends where everyone’s schedule works together and always two birthdays near each other. Three weekends ago Jason was preaching at Bethel Chapel in Waterloo, so we were able to go down on Saturday to my sister’s apartment to celebrate my mom’s and Jason’s birthdays.

This was Jason’s first birthday under the gluten-free restrictions, so that made the cake-baking effort a little more challenging. My mom’s favourite cake is a special 3-layer cake that her aunt used to make. I decided to make that for her and the rest of us. That turned out to be a little more challenging than it should have been. I had never made it before, but I had the recipe, so I checked it over a couple days in advance to make sure I had all the ingredients. I did, but I noticed that the recipe for the filling between layers was missing. I called my grandma to find out some answers, but she didn’t have that part of the recipe. So I decided to just use the information I had in hopes that the icing was the same as the filling.

On the day of the cake-making I made the cakes and the icing only to discover that no, the icing is NOT the same as the filling. I knew the filling was some sort of pudding, but I couldn’t remember what the icing was like. That’s when the phone came out again. I called everyone I could think of and finally someone was home to tell me the coveted pudding recipe! :) So I completed Mom’s cake.

Onto Jason’s cake. He told me that he wanted cheesecake, so it actually turned out to be more straightforward than mom’s cake. It was only the crust where I had to make a substitution. Instead of 1 cup of white flour, I used a mixture of white rice flour, potato starch and tapioca flour! A little brown sugar, some butter and crushed pecans and voila!

Here are some pictures of Delena with the cakes. It was her first cake decorating experience.

Weddings and a Wedding Anniversary

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Okay, so it’s been awhile since we’ve posted anything on here. Thus, we’re taking you back to March! For Spring break, the girls and I headed down to Ohio to visit my cousin and her family. They have two little boys who, at the time, were 2 years old and 2 months old. Delena and the older boy had a blast playing together while the younger two tried not to get mauled by the older kids! :) My cousin and I thoroughly enjoyed having the WHOLE week together. We haven’t spent that much time together since before she and I hit the teen years! We had beautiful weather, thankfully, so we spent a lot of time at local parks keeping the kids busy and tiring them out. :) Check out the pictures on the web album.

A Baby Shower! As we posted earlier, my sister had a baby boy, so of course, being the wonderful aunt that I am, I had to host a shower. It was lots of work and lots of fun. I tried my hand at fondant icing for the first time and let’s just say that it’s a lot harder than it looks! :) Here’s a few pictures from the event.

Wedding Anniversary at Niagara Falls

We couldn't quite see the Canadian Falls

Among our numerous weekend activities have been two weddings. We went to one in April for a former co-worker of Jason’s down in Port Colborne. We also decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary early (May 6 was 4 years!) and got a hotel for the night. We played tourist Friday night at Niagara Falls. It’s a good thing it wasn’t our only opportunity to see the falls as they were mostly covered with fog!

We were also at a wedding this past weekend for a friend of Jason’s from college. This second we were a little more involved with as Jason was the best man! :) Jason went down Thursday night and stayed through until Saturday night. I joined him for the rehearsal and dinner on Friday evening and then we parted ways for the night since they didn’t invite me to the bachelor party! :D I, on the other hand, got to stay the night at a friend’s house from college and stayed up until 1am talking with her. Good thing the girls were with grandparents because I would have been way too tired to get up with them in the morning.

I joined Jason at the 3pm wedding. Thankfully it was inside with the touch snow in the air and the gale winds! The wedding went off with only minor glitches that an inside person would know about and I must say that Jason did the best “best man” job that I’ve ever seen!

Introducing Titus Rosh Poidevin

Titus Rosh Poidevin

Titus Rosh Poidevin

The phone is ringing. What time is it? 4:30am. It could only be one person. It could only be for one reason. Krista has had her baby.

On Wednesday, March 10th, we welcomed our nephew, Titus Rosh Poidevin into our family.  He weighed in at 8lbs, 14 oz, only one ounce smaller than Lorelei when she was born.  He is my sister’s first baby and my parents’ first grandson.  Delena is always playing pretend that her cousins come to visit her and now she has one that can come to visit for REAL.  So she is super excited!

Delena Turns 3!

Delena's Uncle Sean celebrated his birthday too, princess crown included!

With family and fanfare, Delena celebrated her 3rd birthday on February 26th. The actual day wasn’t that eventful for her because she’d already had all her parties. Yes, I said all. This year we were actually able to consolidate a bit and only had 2 parties, instead 3 or 4! She had her first party in Kitchener with Jason’s family and the second one was at my parents’ place which was with Jason’s Mom and my siblings. It was really cute to watch her open her present from us on her birthday though because I had a lot of little things individually wrapped and after each one she would say, “Thank you Mommy!”. She always enjoys doing stamps when I make cards, so I got her her own little tote and a few stamps of her own. She’s been having a blast with them!

January 13th Ministry Update

How has the New Year been treating you?

For me it has been an exercise in jumping in with both feet. Last weekend Angie and I had the opportunity to get away for a married couples retreat at Joy Bible Camp near Bancroft. You can read about that adventure here: http://blogs.ntm.org/jason-bechtel/2010/01/13/laugh-your-way-through-marriage-retreat/

This weekend I am driving to Florida with two co-workers for a week of meetings. We really do appreciate your prayers. Safety on the road is one need, a profitable week of meetings is another. While I am gone Angie and the girls are going to spend some of the week with her parents.

I continue to squeeze in time for the Lauje Tribal Bible. It is supper exciting to think that later this year the Lauje people of Indonesia will have the New Testament in their language for the first time. Praise the Lord with us that the funds for the printing of this New Testament have already come in. If you are interested in helping fund other Tribal Bibles (or maybe your church is) please let me know! Please be praying for me as I continue to format the Lauje New Testament. There is so much potential for a slip of a finger and a letter being added in or taken out!

Angie and the girls have all had minor colds in the last couple of weeks. Praise the Lord that this has all been minor. Please be praying that both girls start sleeping better so that Angie and I can sleep better too (I know, we are selfish!)

In cause you were wondering which prayer card was the most popular, option #1 ended up with a significant lead over my (Jason’s) personal favourite! Don’t worry, my feelings aren’t hurt (that much).

Oh, and Lorelei is officially sitting up on her own now. She still is prone to “tipping over”, but for the most part she has this mastered. Yay Lorelei! Please continue to pray for Angie and I as we raise these two gifts from God. We really want to live lives in step with God which our girls want to model their lives after.

Please check out this video on our website: http://blogs.ntm.org/jason-bechtel/2009/12/31/dagamee-does-your-heart-hurt-too/
Dagamee, a baby-Christian in the Moi tribe of Indonesia, explains: “The Creator God is our true Father and we look to Him to meet our needs — our hunger, our wounds, our hunting. For things big and small we cry out to the Creator.” Angie and I are also keenly aware of God’s blessings in our lives. He went to Calvary for our greatest need, and continues to care for us, even down to money for our hunting trips to the grocery store!

Angie and I feel so privileged to have a part reaching , and others like him around the world, with the Good News about Jesus Christ. All of you who are supporting us, either in prayer, financially, or with much needed encouragement, are also helping the Gospel go where it has never been before!

Millions unreached, none unreachable.

Jason for Angie, Delena and Lorelei too
