keeping those suitcases free of dust…

Posted by Jerry and Joyce McDaniels on Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Yep, it’s time to get out our suitcases again. We are preparing for an important trip to Bolivia. We leave the end of this month for Bolivia. One project we’ve been working on is to update the literacy training that missionary candidates receive and then to train the trainers. This trip to Bolivia is a part of that process. We are so excited to work with about 15 students from Bolivia and Peru, as well as help train the literacy course teachers and field literacy consultants. And we have an added blessing of being able to visit our daughter and her family who are serving at a school for missionary children in Bolivia!

What is going on?

Off like a turtle!

“What is going on in the tribe and what are you guys up to?”

That is a question we have been asked a bit lately and we wanted to give you all the answer.  Occasionally we get updates in regard to the Bible teaching that is continuing in the tribe while we are absent.  Here is part of a message I recently received:

“Tasin Malom a bilai na matarahien ta mutal taman ma iau ta kap no num hinhinawas wara balbalu no nu metal hinhinawas palai.  Io tasin mehet ta wor ma ira tena nurnur… iau at iau lik be haleng diet manga kap timan no buk Galasia… io huo kai metal gi lik be mehet na laka harsakit at mon ta no buk Rom…

Tahut mah tasin wara hinhinwase hapalaine mehet ta no nu mutal hinanuat balin ukai ma mehet kanakana sakit ma mehet kis kawse mutal mara gungunuama wara nasnas habalin leh mutal.

Kaikek mon tasin.  No tasim narakoman ta Krais, Tokiung”

Here is the translation:

Brother Aaron (Malom).  Good afternoon to your family.  I have received your questions and will respond with some information.  Brother we have had discussions with the believers…and I think that many of them really understand well the book of Galatians [the study they just completed]…  So, because of this we think we will go right away [instead of further review] into a study of the book of Romans…

Thank you brother for the news to us about your return here.  We are very excited and we are waiting for your family with joy to see you again.

That is all brother.  We are brothers in Christ, Tokiung

There have been struggles in our absence but we are thrilled that they are continuing to study God’s Word.  Our excitement to see them again too is beginning to grow. Last week we had a wonderful family reunion in Colorado and were able to see many friends, cousins, aunts, and uncles along the way – many for the first time since we have been back in the States.  Now with only 6 weeks left in the States our days are filling up with details to prepare for the next 4 years in Papua New Guinea.  In case you are interested or in the area, here is where our family will be for the next 6 Sundays and we would love to see you:

April 14 - Sioux City, IA - Sunnybrook Community Church – get together after am services

April 21 – Camdenton, MO (Aaron only)

April 28 – Crete, NE – Crete Berean Church – adult SS class and morning service

May 5 – Sioux City, IA – Morningside Bible Church – am service

May 12 – Tulsa, OK – Calvary Bible Church – am service

May 19 – Kansas City, MO area – LifeSpring (am attendance); Grace Bible church – pm service

May 26 – Omaha, NE – for departure

You can find details for most of these churches online or you can write to us for more info, but we would love to see you if possible.  Also, next week I will be in Missouri for a week and half of meetings in regard to curriculum in tribal locations as well as meetings for consulting tribal locations in regard to culture and language.  I would appreciate your prayers for these to be helpful and productive.

Our girls are doing well with the traveling and packing up and are excited for the return.  And to answer the other common questions we get…Yes, Briella is doing great.  She is now rolling around and slowly dragging herself all over the room.

On the move,

Aaron

Fact – Tax deadlines are on Monday, which reminds us again of so many of you who have given those “tax-deductable” donation through our New Tribes Mission account.  Thank you so much for your part in keeping us in ministry.

Moving like a turtle

Dallas

Posted by Torre and Narah Meissner on Monday, March 11th, 2013

Texas is a big state.  So even though we live in the same state as family and partners, we have never visited them.  You see, it’s a 10 hour drive to Dallas, 10 hours of desert.  And while our ministry has flexibility, we can’t just lock up the guest house and hang a sign that says, “Be back in in a week!”

However a few weeks ago God organized a way for us to take a trip to Dallas for a week.  A wonderful couple filled in for us at the guest house and we took off!  The kids traveled really well and we had a safe ten hour drive.

While there we stayed with friends Vern and Mary Schutter (oddly enough we didn’t get a picture with them), who treated us with such love and care, it was truly relaxing.

We connected with their son Josh and his family.  I grew up with Josh and it’s still kind of weird to see him has a dad.  He probably says that about me.

Josh and Jenn

Good friends Scot and April Keen are in Dallas for six months while Scot takes classes at Dallas Theological Seminary.

We had time as a family to check out some playgrounds and a state park.

We also filled our time visiting with my Aunt and Uncle and friends the Baileys.  It was a fast and fun week filled with blessings and encouragement with God’s people.

Travel Plans & Ministry Pressure…

Posted by Joel Potter on Wednesday, March 6th, 2013

On The Go...

It was inevitable that the time would come when I had to hit the road. I’ve logged a few thousand miles on a trip to Michigan and most recently Pennsylvania and now, not long after my latest trip, I’ll be back in the air on my way to Texas.

I love traveling and when it’s combined with the ministry I’m so passionate about and my department covers the expenses, it’s all I could ask for…except for my sweet family at home without me. Would you praise God for how well things have gone over my last few trips here on the home front and also pray that during the next trip later this week, things are calm and healthy at home?

I’ll be frank though, traveling is one of the easiest things I do in a ministry that I find myself so stretched in. The level of responsibility that I have, the trust that is placed in me, the sheer volume of communication that it takes to keep many important things going at once is so easily overwhelming!

I’m freshly assured though of God’s promise that He makes me adequate for whatever He has called me to! The Apostle Paul’s encouragement to believers will refresh your weary heart if you like me are on the brink of being overwhelmed. Take a minute to let God’s word encourage you! Click here to read.

Crystal’s Crossings :: February 2013

Crystal’s Crossings :: February 2013

Thank you so much for your prayers and constant support.  I pray this new year finds you and your family looking for the will of God in your own lives.

Well, last time I wrote, I was in El Paso, TX in December, helping translate for Edwin & Anita.  Since then, Edwin had finished his 12 days of therapy with the chiropractor, and we went back to Chihuahua.   He had recovered quite well, but he wasn’t a 100% better.  After making it back to Chihuahua, he continued heading to physical therapy to continue to strengthen the back muscles.  But after Christmas, he sneezed, and he was back in bed with a ton of pain.  So after much prayer, he did decide to have a back surgery, which happened a few days after Christmas. Since then, he is still going to therapy every day plus water therapy.

Please be praying for him.  This school year has been so rough, because as director, he was only able to teach about 6 weeks of classes, and the rest of the time he has been in bed.  He feels like he is useless during this time of healing.  Please be praying for his healing and for strength for his family.

It has been a very good test for us as a team.  We’ve all had to work hard and in different ways to help Edwin get to therapy.  I’ve helped drive him and Anita the 40 minutes to therapy numerous times, and other staff members too.  We’ve also had to team together to get the kids to and from school each day.  It’s been a very good test for us to work together as a team, and help each other out.

Plus I’ve also been helping out the Grangers, my other co-workers, since the middle of December.  In December, Mexico got a new presi.dent, and one of his first actions as presi.dent was to change the immigration and visa process.  The Grangers turned in their paperwork for their visas right after Thanksgiving and they have to wait two more weeks (almost 3 whole months) for the visas!  We used to be able to get the visas in about 3 weeks!  Because their car papers expired in December, since then they had to leave their two vehicles in El Paso until they could get their visas. Therefore I have been working with them in coordinating rides to the city and letting them borrow my car to take the kids to school and pick up them up each day, plus for meetings, church, ministry, etc.

Oh.  And the water pump plus a valve in the engine on my car went out on the Grangers as they drove it into town three weeks ago. :S  And I will start my visa process, and probably sell my car in the states in March.  Then try to figure out the options of buying a Mexican car down here, and the whole registration process, etc.

The good news is that the Grangers got their visas last week, and this wek they were able to bring in their van, so that will help a lot.  And my car has been fixed and now I’m free to travel back and forth to the city!

Some days it just seems to be one thing after another, right? And I know I’m not the only one.  Plus, then there are days when Satan is a punk.  And he knows how to discourage us almost constantly.  For example, since I came back from Christmas break, I honestly had not been 100% excited to be back.  I was in a hard core funk.  I just had no desire to do anything.  And I have no idea why.  It’s not that I wanted to leave Mexico, or that  I wanted to move back to the states.  But I was having serious doubts about almost everything.  All these new visa rules, issues that constantly come up with the students, not knowing what God has for my future (tribe or the Ranch), just a lot of things were stressing me out.  I just had like 5 weeks of constant discouragement.

Plus, before I even crossed back into Mexico in January, I got an email from a place where I used to work, asking me to come back and help them out.  It’s a really good job, and it has awesome benefits, and there would be a secure outcome.  It’s the kind of job that parents dream for their kids to have.  And I had to turn it down.

But it’s not what God has for me.   He has me serving here in Mexico, amidst the difficulties, and trials, and issues.  And I have been daily relying on Him, and His strength to keep me going. Things are going better now here for me.  I’m staying encouraged, and looking forward to what God has for me here in the Ranch, and the rest of the year.

This is our group of young adults, jr. highers, and high schoolers.  This is a picture we took after one of our studies.  I taught for three weeks on our Identity in Christ.  And for the group it was eye opening and freeing.  Now they do not feel the pressure to “perform” but instead they can rest in their acceptance because of what Christ has done for them!  Such a good reminder for us all.
This is a photo with (L-R): Ana’s mom, Ana, Kari, Anita, and myself.  We attended the Quincenera for Ana’s niece.  Remember the family that I keep having y’all pray for, it’s them.  We enjoyed the night together!  Her niece’s color for the party was purple, that’s why we are all in purple! :)
Something awesome happened at Christmas time.  My parents blessed our family with a three week trip to Germany!  What!  Our family hasn’t had a vacation in 15 years or so.  And as a part of my dad’s retirement this month he wants to take us on a trip.  We, which includes my parents, my grandma, her sister (my great aunt), my sister, brother and sister-in-law, and me, will be heading to Germany & France to visit family and see some sights.  As a family we have always wanted to do something like this, but we never thought it would be possible.  Germany is the birthplace of my grandma and her sister, and my father was born in France.  This trip happens at an awesome time for me, because we will be having spring break during my trip. :)
Praises ::

Check out the stories about the Guarijio and my friend Katie!  It’s pretty cool to see what is happening among tribal people in Mexico.I’m hoping that within the next two months I’ll have an update on moving to a tribe.  It’s looking like I might be heading to work with the Mixteco people in Baja, but keep praying, because it’s not final yet!  And I’m really wanting to follow God’s timing.

Also, I’m working on planning for a 3-4 month furlough this summer (mid-June-mid-September)!  I’m excited to be able to head towards Oregon for a few months to visit my three supporting churches, lots of friends, and enjoying summer activities with my family! :)

Crystal

Crystal’s Crossings :: Christmas 2012

Posted by Crystal Pierce on Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

So the weather is finally changing here in Mexico, and the temperature is dropping in the mornings, while it stays in the 70′s & 80′s during the day.  I’m ready for it to be cooler so I can wear sweaters & my cowboy boots. :)

The above picture is of the two missionary teams that work in Baja California, their children, the 8 consultants and myself.  I really enjoyed my time in Baja, visiting the missionaries, getting to know them better, seeing what life is like over there, and getting a different picture of how they are doing church planting.  Please continue to pray for me as I work on planning an exploratory trip to visit the Tepehuan people.  We thought it would work out to visit in November, but that didn’t happen.  So hopefully next year I’ll be able to make a trip with one of the student couples in the Ranch, and then I can start taking some decisions.

After getting back from Baja at the beginning of October, things changed drastically at the Ranch.  First thing, our director, Edwin, injured his back and has been in bed since (8 weeks)!  At the beginning of November  he was able to get an MRI, and they found out that Edwin has two herrniated disks and a bulging one, which is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.  He’s not been able to drive, so myself along with the other teachers, and some students have been helping with getting the kids to school, or getting Edwin to doctor’s appointments.  Edwin has had such bad pain, that when we take him to docto’rs appointments or the city, he has to lay down the whole trip.  And he’s only been able to teach a few classes from his house, but he’s in pain the whole time.

The plan as of last week, was that he would go in for a back surgery on Tuesday, but that didn’t happen.  Edwin has never wanted a back surgery (since there aren’t good results for back surgeries), so after a lot of prayer, and that morning he was all prepped for surgery, God allowed the x-ray machine to break.  God cancelled his surgery!  So the next plan was/is for Edwin and Anita to head to El Paso, TX and have daily appointments with a chiropractor.  Edwin and Anita don’t know English, so as a part of a team decision, I was selected to bring them to Texas and because they already have visas to the states it was an easy decision for us all to make.  We have plans of being in El Paso for two weeks, and then returning to Mexico.  I’m helping them out with translating for all the doctor’s appointments and in general living down here.  Their three teen boys stayed in Mexico with one of the other staff families (the Grangers) at the Ranch, and then next week some teachers will go out to the Ranch and stay with them.  Then we shall all be reunited after that.  These appointments have already helped Edwin out so much already in just 4 days.

Please be praying for Edwin & Anita while we are here in El Paso, and for me as I’m constantly translating.  God has given me constant reminders of what it means to be on a missionary team and why we work in teams.
Here is a picture of me with Edwin & Anita.

I’m excited to be able to spend another Christmas at home with my parents & siblings!  If you will be in the Baker City, Oregon area between Dec. 19-Jan. 2, let me know and we can hang out! :)

Blessings to you and your family during this holiday season,
Crystal Pierce

happy iguana month

Posted by Jerry and Joyce McDaniels on Thursday, February 21st, 2013

iguanaA very happy “Iguana Month” to you! That is February in Kuna-land. This month the Kuna literacy teaching teams in Panama are beginning their classes.

Recently we received word from Hernan, the Kuna brother who is coordinating the literacy effort that he has been training literacy teachers from several more Kuna communities who didn’t participate in the workshop last November. (more…)

In the Philippines…

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Thursday, February 14th, 2013

A sunset we saw since being back in the Philippines

Thank you to all who prayed for us as we returned to the Philippines.

1Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord.

  • We arrived safely in Manila the end of January and got over jet lag in time to help with child care at a conference Justin and Nicole attended. Their conference went well and we enjoyed having the grandchildren in tow (along with a few other children) We are back in Manila and tomorrow we will be traveling with them to our island. We are scheduled to fly into the village on Monday so they can show the children where mommy grew up. They plan on spending 2 nights and then out again as they have to get back home and back into language study. Please pray for the weather to cooperate for all the flights and that our time in the village together will be a blessing and encouragement to all of us. We have really enjoyed being with our daughter and son in law and are encouraged with how they are doing after one year in East Asia.
  • Once Justin and Nicole leave, we will be back into full time checking of scripture. Please pray for us as we adjust to living in the village. Pray for wisdom and strength to accomplish all God has for us to do. Thanks to those of you who pray for us and for those who have given extra finances for our time in the Philippines. What a blessing each of you are to us as you partner with us.

We need your prayers!

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Friday, January 18th, 2013

Greetings in Jesus’ name!

Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. What a wonderful message!

This month has been quite busy.

The first week, Lance continued translating the book of Leviticus.

The second week, we both attended a workshop to learn how to talk with the media during a crisis, which our leadership team in the Philippines asked us to attend. It was very challenging, but also very enjoyable!

The third week started with our helping good friends get to and from the funeral for their father-in-law/dad in Greenville, SC. Now Lance is back to work on translation as well as our least favorite task – PACKING!

Please pray as we leave for the Philippines on the 30th of this month. We have been blessed to live in the church missionary house while in the US. With the prospect that a new pastor might need to use the house, we are packing away our belongings. Please pray for us, as we get ready to leave.

One of the things we are excited about and hope to accomplish over the next 4 months is getting Genesis and Exodus ready for final checking, so it can be officially published for the Higaunon church.

We just received word that the satellite company that we use in the village for email is “down” with problems. This leaves our co-workers without internet communication. The company has ordered a part from outside the country that will be expensive for them, as it has to get through customs. Please pray!

We are very thankful for your partnership with us in prayer and financially.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura

PS – we have been made aware of a need that our daughter has for their ministry. Write us if you’re interested in helping.

Literacy training in Panama

practice teaching the literacy class

practice teaching the literacy class

Last year at this time we were looking ahead to the Kuna literacy training as a huge step of faith with a whole lot of work needing to be accomplished. Here we are looking back on the pictures of the literacy training held in Panama a few weeks ago, thanking God for His provision and wisdom! Many of you were part of the team through your prayers and gifts toward the project.

More than 110 people from 42 different Kuna villages or churches attended the literacy training. The joy and energy was fueled by their enthusiasm for teaching people to read in preparation for the whole Bible in Kuna! Who can’t get hyped to think that soon the Kuna people will be able to read the Psalms, Proverbs, and all those beloved Old Testament stories? (more…)
