Why we love our job…

Posted by Lance and Laura Ostman on Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Happy Easter Everyone!

We are half way through our time in the village and have seen quite a bit accomplished. We are very conscious of the fact that many are praying for us.

Imbos

One of the reasons we love our job is seeing people who were once bound by the power of evil spirits, now set free by the power of the Gospel! That’s the true message of Easter! Dag-ay and Imbos were two such people. The gospel had such an impact on them that they freely gave of themselves to help with scripture translation. They loved their job but at the same time, they were looking forward to being with Jesus! Two years ago, God took Imbos home to be with Him but Dag-ay continued helping with translation during our visit last year. After we left, she moved to another village to be near other family members. (more…)

Off and running

Posted by Ian and Julie Fallis on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

Would you please pray for Julie and me as we start 2013 at a dead run?

This week I’m helping teach missionaries who’ve come to Florida from around the world about dealing with the media in crisis situations.

Next week we head to Thailand, where I’ll take part in a forum of pastors and NTM members across the globe. We’ll discuss the partnerships that will help New Tribes Mission carry out its role in completing the Great Commission.

We’re back Feb. 1, and then Feb. 8-10 we go to South Florida for a couple of days. And Feb. 11-14 we’re bringing folks who work with our Communications team from all over the USA and Canada to Sanford for a seminar on persuasive communication.

The weekend of the Feb. 23 and 24, Julie and I have plans to see some people in Tampa. And Feb. 25-27 I’ll make a trip to Pennsylvania, to talk with the people who run Wayumi about how we can help them communicate better. Wayumi is becoming a key part of our program to bring more people into NTM, which is a key to completing the Great Commission, so helping them is strategic.

March 8-12 I’ll join our Communications leadership team in Austin, Texas, for SXSW Interactive, the premier conference for interactive media. By knowing what’s going on with interactive media, we can see what we can use to help NTM in carrying out the Great Commission.

The following weekend Julie and I are supposed to head back to Tampa.

So far, things slow down a bit after that, but we already have three out-of-state overnight trips planned in each of the following three months: Georgia in April, Tennessee in May and Missouri in June.

Here’s how you can pray for us:

  • Pray for good health. And pray that we’ll make time to get the rest we need between traveling and meeting, so we can get the most out of, and put the most into, those meetings.
  • Pray for smooth travels, which we’d like, but more importantly, pray that we’ll be able to see and carry out God’s purposes if our plans are interrupted.
  • Pray that our car will hold up to the travel required, or that we’ll be able to replace it.
  • Pray that I’ll be able to do all the other work I need to do between meetings – writing, editing, planning, etc.

Blessed

I sometimes wonder why I put up with the hardships of serving as a missionary.

But not for long.

It’s inspiring for me – and I hope for you as well – to be part of reaching tribes and transforming lives. To help hasten the day when people from every tongue, tribe and nation have the opportunity not only to be disciples of Christ, but to make disciples. To bring an end to hundreds of years of darkness that men, women and children have lived in … and died in.

This week Julie and I have been talking with the men and women who represent New Tribes Mission in the USA and Canada, hearing their thoughts and getting their input on what we can do to better serve them, and therefore do a better job of raising up the next generation of missionaries – the generation that may very well complete the task that God has set before us all, making disciples of every people group.

So what if our car had difficulty making it here? (It’s fixed, but still should be replaced; the mechanic found more issues that are going to need to be addressed.) So what if it’s a lot colder here in Pennsylvania than in Florida? (I know, I know, it’s not even really cold here yet. Humor this Florida resident, OK?) So what if we have some serious financial challenges?

Julie and I get the blessing of being right in the midst of what God is doing worldwide, and spending time with co-workers we don’t get to see much – and who don’t often get many opportunities to be with others committed to what God is doing among tribal people – is inspiring.

Thanks for being here with us through your prayers, gifts and encouragement. We leave here Saturday for the trip home; please again pray for a good, safe drive home.

Halfway there

This morning finds us in Dublin, Virginia, a little more than halfway to Pennsylvania, where I’ll take part in a conference Tuesday through Friday.

For New Tribes Mission to play its role in completing the Great Commission in this generation, we need to send more people out to establish churches among unreached people groups. And to do that, we need more church planters coming into our training and more experienced people stepping into support roles, such as teachers and journeyman writers and accountants and IT professionals and electricians.

Helping people get involved is one of the highest priorities of the folks who serve as NTM representatives across the country, and I’m going to be at their conference to find out how we can best help them.

We want to find out what they’ve learned, so we can give them the printed materials, the websites – perhaps even the smartphone and tablet apps – that will help people take that important step into becoming missionaries.

Pray for today’s travel north. The car, though a bit cramped, held up well the first day. Pray for a productive time at this conference. And pray that this investment in working together helps raise up more laborers to reach tribes and transform lives.

An empty nest

Julie and I took Jon and Meghan and our grandson Daniel to the airport this morning to fly back to China – Hohhot, to be precise. Please pray that they have a good trip back, and especially that God sends people their way to be an encouragement and help to them as they fly literally halfway around the world with a tiny baby.

We also just got word that another grandbaby is on its way. Our youngest daughter Brynna, who lives in Altamonte Springs, is expecting; her due date is in May. Pray for a good pregnancy and safe, healthy delivery.

Jackie, our oldest, is moving to another house in the San Diego area. Pray that the move goes well and the new place works out for her.

Our youngest, Evan, is in Tallahassee, with plans to start at Tallahassee Community College in January. Please pray that he is able to find a job soon.

Learning to Live Free

Posted by Barry and Denise Spor on Friday, August 10th, 2012

We are happy for the answers to prayer in regards to Irlei and also to Jhoni getting back up to his house in the tribe. Thank you for supporting the Guanano work in this way. Irlei came to church with her parents Moise and Delfina this past Sunday. Let’s keep praying that the Lord will heal her spiritually as he has physically.

Our co-worker Carol has been developing some materials to teach Guananos how to read and write their own language a key in seeing a mature church. This way they can read their Bibles and grow because they understood what they read. The last couple of weeks she has been testing the materials by teaching Gustavo’s kids. She taught all three of her girls how to read many years ago. But this is the first time she has taught Guanano kids. She is gaining valuable experience that will help her improve the materials as well as be ready to train others how to use them. The kids also are learning how to read and they enjoy the daily drilling and writing exercises. Unlike most kids, they eagerly ask Carol if there’s homework! Pray: for these materials to become an effective tool so the Guanano believers can grow through reading and understand.

God is using Romans 6 to teach Guanano believers they have been set free from the power of Satan and the sin nature and are no longer slaves to them. They have been reluctant to believe this, because some not all obviously continue to struggle with being slaves to the power of drinking, immorality and other sins. In order to illustrate our freedom from sin, Gustavo suggested using the phrase “yaria wahyo”. “Yaria wahyo” means to die first and leave someone behind.  He used the example of a married man who mercilessly mistreats his wife. Her life with him is miserable. Then for some reason, perhaps from sickness or sadness, she “yaria wahyos” her husband. She dies before he does, leaving him behind. Suddenly her husband has no one to mistreat anymore because she’s no longer there. Gustavo explained his illustration by saying, “That is like what has happened to us. When we died together with Christ, we ‘yaria wahyoed’ Satan and the sin nature. That simply means we got out from under their domination. They can no longer mercilessly mistreat us and demand that we do the bad things they ask because we have died and are no longer there. Since we died together with Christ, we have been made members of God’s family, and Christ now lives in and through us.” Please thank the Lord for bringing Gustavo from Colombia to work with us in editing these Bible lessons. Please continue to ask God to use the teaching of Romans to sanctify and grow up his Guanano church.

Thank you for your ministry of prayer on our behalf and on behalf of the Guanano church!
