We drive to church in the mission’s “Big Red”.

Driving to a local Haitian church.
You can see a picture of us on our way to church by 4-wheel drive, on our NTM blog where we post a new picture each month (see our web address at the bottom.) The churches here in Haiti may read from a French Bible, but the preaching is done in the language of the people: Creole. Since Creole was developed as a language by freed slaves from West Africa during the colonization of Haiti by the French, there are certain similarities to the French language which help me follow along in the Creole services. But there are also significant differences that are not always obvious, (more…)

How did the sun stop?

Entrance to our new apartment
Without a Biblical foundation, even in how we teach science, people with an animistic worldview grapple with how to explain that the Bible says the sun stopped (Joshua 10:12-13). An animistic worldview believes that spirits, or some unknown Force, controls all events on earth. Some people in Haiti believe that the sun “rays” are the Force that causes the earth to spin. So a Christian from this kind of animistic background can think that God told this “Force” to stop spinning the earth for a day. (more…)

Volunteers building kitchen cabinets for new apartment
Finding a routine in a new milieu is challenging!
We find there is always more than enough work to keep us busy, and we are asking God to give us His wisdom in setting right priorities. I have been able to set up an office corner in one of the BHM offices, and to pick up a routine for continuing the final revisions for the 2nd Grade Bible lessons. I am praising the Lord for the excellent help I have been getting from a Belgian lady here who is married to a Haitian man who works for the Haiti Bible Society. Martha too has been very busy helping the missionary ladies, especially while the director’s wife is gone for a month – and her help is being very much appreciated (right now they are preparing for a national Haitian pastor’s conference to start this week.)
We also are very thankful for how the Lord sent not just one but two finish carpenters (more…)

PTL that all our luggage arrived: with us, and with no customs fees!

Trying to load our crates on the BHM pick-up.
First we were over-weight for the amount of luggage we had told the Missionary Flights International (MFI) that we would be needing to take to Haiti. We had packed all night long, Monday January 28 to 29th. Then we drove a U-Haul truck from Alabama to the MFI guest house in Ft.Pierce, Florida. At weigh-in, Wednesday morning, they suggested that our larger crates might need to go on a later flight, the following week. But the next day, when we landed in the Bahamas to let off a missionary family there, the missionary pilot assured us that all of our crates were on board. Arriving finally at Port-au-Prince, we expected our 3 crates to be delegated as cargo for separate customs negotiations the following week. To our surprise, even the largest 300+-pound crate came through on the baggage-claim carousel and was put on a luggage cart. By God’s grace, the customs officials waved us through (more…)

We fly to Haiti, this month!
We start by driving from Alabama on the 29th, to take our 30 or more trunks & totes by U-Haul to the Missionary Flights International (MFI) center in Florida. They

Stories with our grandkids
will fly us to Port-au-Prince on the 31st. The Baptist Haiti Mission complex, where we will be living and working, is about 20 miles up the mountain from the capitol, but it takes one to two hour to drive to Fermathe. (more…)

From Florida to Mississippi, and from Alabama to Idaho -
We will be travelling a lot this month. Mom is recuperating well from her surgery and 2-week stay at a local rehab center. She is still receiving out-patient physical therapy – until we move her (Dec.11th) to Mississippi, to stay with her son Paul & Latresa for a month. Martha & I are with her here at NTM Homes in FL, helping her sort & pack up her 2-bedroom apartment, in preparation for her permanent move to my sister’s (Marcy & Dan Schuring) in Missouri in January.
Over the Christmas season, Martha and I will be visiting our daughter Heidi & Mark Miller – thanks to a generous designated gift! Oh, and did I mention (more…)

Mom had kyphoplasty back surgery on the 5th.
I’m writing this from the waiting room in the Sanford (FL) Hospital. Mom fell again, this time fracturing at least two vertebrae in her mid and lower back. The neurosurgeon is doing microscopic surgery to insert cement to stabilize the brittle crushed bone(s), hoping to not need to fuse them. This is expected to be a 2-hour procedure. Hospital rehab will likely follow. As the eldest son, I’m trying to coordinate and inform siblings in Brazil, Canada, Missouri, Mississippi & around Florida as to mom’s condition and future needs.

Bible curriculum and Creole Bible
When we get back to Alabama, we need to move our things out of our home by the end of November, for our house-sitter to be able to move in. We will stay the last couple of months in the church’s “mission house” as we prepare, purchase & pack for Haiti. I will also still be working on the revision process for the grade two Bible curriculum. (more…)

It looks like we are cleared to go!

Training teachers for their new Bible curriculum.
No, our house did not sell. But a lovely Christian lady from our church will be able to house-sit it for us while we are on our “2-year” assignment to Haiti. Praise the Lord! We are planning to move to Haiti in January 2013, Lord willing. (Yes, straight to Haiti, without stopping in Florida for several months, like we had been planning earlier.)

Grade 1 teachers in Haiti with new Bible textbooks.
My trip to Haiti last month went well. There were 40 first grade teachers and school coordinators who attended the workshop on how to teach the new Bible curriculum in their schools. Schools started late again this year in Haiti, and God also answered our prayers to release the new textbooks from customs earlier this month, so that they can still be distributed to the 330 Baptist Haiti Mission schools for this Fall. BHM School Director with Grade 1 Bible textbook
Will each of the 330 grade One teachers receive a Creole Bible this month?
The new Grade One Bible textbooks have been printed, and are being shipped to Haiti. The director of schools for the Baptist Haiti Mission has invited me to give the school coordinators and area teachers an orientation workshop on how to teach this new Bible curriculum for their 330 schools in northern Haiti. So I will be in Haiti from September 25 to October 2nd. Although education in Haiti is done in the French language, the teachers need to help the Creole-speaking students to understand the materials being taught … in Creole. I want to affirm to them the value of teaching Biblical principles in the children’s heart language … by providing them each with a Creole Bible for each grade one classroom. Do you want to be a part of seeing these Bibles distributed to the schools in Haiti? Each Bible costs about $11. (more…)

Thanks to all who prayed for Lance and the team from our church who went to Haiti. They had a great time! God taught them much and used them to be a blessing to the people they ministered to. What a blessing to be involved in what God is doing around the world.
