Family Update

Posted by Mandi Brower on Sunday, April 21st, 2013

As I try to write this update, I am continually interrupted by “Mommy, I’m hungry,” cries from Hannah as her brother takes a toy, or Josh tripping over noisy toys. It’s fitting because I’m writing about the kids this time :) . Despite the hard work, they are the sweetest part of each day.

Seth has been growing into such a communicator. His biggest frustration since he was even a small baby was not being able to talk. Now that he’s acquiring a vocabulary, he loves that he can have conversations…even if Mommy is the only one who can really understand. I play translator a lot. If we meet someone new he will ramble on about everything that he can remember that we did or are going to do. He loves to introduce all of his family to anyone who will stop and listen. I love the way he says his sister’s name; Hannah woze.

Little miss Hannah “woze” has been growing quite a personality of her own. After months of being tackled by her big brother, she has learned that if she swings her arms in a helicopter-like motion very quickly, he might back off. For the most part she just likes to keep her distance from brother. I don’t blame her :) . She knows how to charm everyone in the room with her cheesy smiles and is still the happiest baby I’ve ever met.

Florida has been a great move for us. I am loving being at home with the kids and have gotten to know several other moms in the community. I’ve even been able to go out walking with other moms in the neighborhood that I randomly met. Josh is loving being in the same location as all the guys that he has needed to communicate with daily. We are so thankful to be a part of New Tribes Mission and playing a part in expanding the reach of the Gospel.

Two weeks and counting.

Innovation in the jungle! WIFI via a tin can!

In this fast-paced world we live in today, two weeks without internet was quite the adjustment! Our only way of communicating with “the outside world” was via our 2-way radio. How thankful we are that our line of communication with our Heavenly Father is never “offline!”

Lance and I arrived in the village two weeks ago. Rats and bats had taken up residence in our house during the time we were away (at least there were no snakes this time)…so it took a few days to get things cleaned up and for us to feel settled in. Lance has finished checking through 1 and 2 Samuel and continues checking in other books he’d been translating while in the US this past year. He’s thankful for his two language assistants who help to make sure the meaning is clear, while they endeavor to stay true to the text. We so appreciate your prayers for this huge task of translating the Old Testament into the Higaunon language.

God had different plans than the ones we had made for our daughter and her family! There was much disappointment that they were not able to visit the village. The weather was not good on the only days they had available to fly. They returned to their city in East Asia only hours after we flew back to the village. They are back into full time language study.

We so enjoyed the time we had with our daughter and family, as well as their coworkers, during a conference they attended. Lance and I took care of the little ones while their parents were in meetings. There was plenty of time for us with our three grandchildren and we made lots of fun memories. After being together for more than 2 weeks, we really missed them when we parted. We’re so thankful we had that time together.

Please continue to pray for wisdom for us in the work God has for us to do. Our hope is to get Genesis and Exodus through a final check so it can be printed and distributed to the people. Imagine getting these books in your language for the first time! We take our copies of the Scriptures very much for granted, don’t we?!

Once again we want to express our deepest thanks for your partnership in this ministry to the Higaunon people.

Secure in Christ’s love,

Lance & Laura

We had a great time with our daughter and her precious family.

Crystal’s Crossings :: February 2013

Thank you so much for your prayers and constant support.  I pray this new year finds you and your family looking for the will of God in your own lives.

Well, last time I wrote, I was in El Paso, TX in December, helping translate for Edwin & Anita.  Since then, Edwin had finished his 12 days of therapy with the chiropractor, and we went back to Chihuahua.   He had recovered quite well, but he wasn’t a 100% better.  After making it back to Chihuahua, he continued heading to physical therapy to continue to strengthen the back muscles.  But after Christmas, he sneezed, and he was back in bed with a ton of pain.  So after much prayer, he did decide to have a back surgery, which happened a few days after Christmas. Since then, he is still going to therapy every day plus water therapy.

Please be praying for him.  This school year has been so rough, because as director, he was only able to teach about 6 weeks of classes, and the rest of the time he has been in bed.  He feels like he is useless during this time of healing.  Please be praying for his healing and for strength for his family.

It has been a very good test for us as a team.  We’ve all had to work hard and in different ways to help Edwin get to therapy.  I’ve helped drive him and Anita the 40 minutes to therapy numerous times, and other staff members too.  We’ve also had to team together to get the kids to and from school each day.  It’s been a very good test for us to work together as a team, and help each other out.

Plus I’ve also been helping out the Grangers, my other co-workers, since the middle of December.  In December, Mexico got a new presi.dent, and one of his first actions as presi.dent was to change the immigration and visa process.  The Grangers turned in their paperwork for their visas right after Thanksgiving and they have to wait two more weeks (almost 3 whole months) for the visas!  We used to be able to get the visas in about 3 weeks!  Because their car papers expired in December, since then they had to leave their two vehicles in El Paso until they could get their visas. Therefore I have been working with them in coordinating rides to the city and letting them borrow my car to take the kids to school and pick up them up each day, plus for meetings, church, ministry, etc.

Oh.  And the water pump plus a valve in the engine on my car went out on the Grangers as they drove it into town three weeks ago. :S  And I will start my visa process, and probably sell my car in the states in March.  Then try to figure out the options of buying a Mexican car down here, and the whole registration process, etc.

The good news is that the Grangers got their visas last week, and this wek they were able to bring in their van, so that will help a lot.  And my car has been fixed and now I’m free to travel back and forth to the city!

Some days it just seems to be one thing after another, right? And I know I’m not the only one.  Plus, then there are days when Satan is a punk.  And he knows how to discourage us almost constantly.  For example, since I came back from Christmas break, I honestly had not been 100% excited to be back.  I was in a hard core funk.  I just had no desire to do anything.  And I have no idea why.  It’s not that I wanted to leave Mexico, or that  I wanted to move back to the states.  But I was having serious doubts about almost everything.  All these new visa rules, issues that constantly come up with the students, not knowing what God has for my future (tribe or the Ranch), just a lot of things were stressing me out.  I just had like 5 weeks of constant discouragement.

Plus, before I even crossed back into Mexico in January, I got an email from a place where I used to work, asking me to come back and help them out.  It’s a really good job, and it has awesome benefits, and there would be a secure outcome.  It’s the kind of job that parents dream for their kids to have.  And I had to turn it down.

But it’s not what God has for me.   He has me serving here in Mexico, amidst the difficulties, and trials, and issues.  And I have been daily relying on Him, and His strength to keep me going. Things are going better now here for me.  I’m staying encouraged, and looking forward to what God has for me here in the Ranch, and the rest of the year.

This is our group of young adults, jr. highers, and high schoolers.  This is a picture we took after one of our studies.  I taught for three weeks on our Identity in Christ.  And for the group it was eye opening and freeing.  Now they do not feel the pressure to “perform” but instead they can rest in their acceptance because of what Christ has done for them!  Such a good reminder for us all.
This is a photo with (L-R): Ana’s mom, Ana, Kari, Anita, and myself.  We attended the Quincenera for Ana’s niece.  Remember the family that I keep having y’all pray for, it’s them.  We enjoyed the night together!  Her niece’s color for the party was purple, that’s why we are all in purple! :)
Something awesome happened at Christmas time.  My parents blessed our family with a three week trip to Germany!  What!  Our family hasn’t had a vacation in 15 years or so.  And as a part of my dad’s retirement this month he wants to take us on a trip.  We, which includes my parents, my grandma, her sister (my great aunt), my sister, brother and sister-in-law, and me, will be heading to Germany & France to visit family and see some sights.  As a family we have always wanted to do something like this, but we never thought it would be possible.  Germany is the birthplace of my grandma and her sister, and my father was born in France.  This trip happens at an awesome time for me, because we will be having spring break during my trip. :)

Check out the stories about the Guarijio and my friend Katie!  It’s pretty cool to see what is happening among tribal people in Mexico.I’m hoping that within the next two months I’ll have an update on moving to a tribe.  It’s looking like I might be heading to work with the Mixteco people in Baja, but keep praying, because it’s not final yet!  And I’m really wanting to follow God’s timing.

Also, I’m working on planning for a 3-4 month furlough this summer (mid-June-mid-September)!  I’m excited to be able to head towards Oregon for a few months to visit my three supporting churches, lots of friends, and enjoying summer activities with my family! :)

Crystal’s Crossings :: Christmas 2012

Posted by Crystal Pierce on Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

So the weather is finally changing here in Mexico, and the temperature is dropping in the mornings, while it stays in the 70′s & 80′s during the day.  I’m ready for it to be cooler so I can wear sweaters & my cowboy boots. :)

The above picture is of the two missionary teams that work in Baja California, their children, the 8 consultants and myself.  I really enjoyed my time in Baja, visiting the missionaries, getting to know them better, seeing what life is like over there, and getting a different picture of how they are doing church planting.  Please continue to pray for me as I work on planning an exploratory trip to visit the Tepehuan people.  We thought it would work out to visit in November, but that didn’t happen.  So hopefully next year I’ll be able to make a trip with one of the student couples in the Ranch, and then I can start taking some decisions.

After getting back from Baja at the beginning of October, things changed drastically at the Ranch.  First thing, our director, Edwin, injured his back and has been in bed since (8 weeks)!  At the beginning of November  he was able to get an MRI, and they found out that Edwin has two herrniated disks and a bulging one, which is putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.  He’s not been able to drive, so myself along with the other teachers, and some students have been helping with getting the kids to school, or getting Edwin to doctor’s appointments.  Edwin has had such bad pain, that when we take him to docto’rs appointments or the city, he has to lay down the whole trip.  And he’s only been able to teach a few classes from his house, but he’s in pain the whole time.

The plan as of last week, was that he would go in for a back surgery on Tuesday, but that didn’t happen.  Edwin has never wanted a back surgery (since there aren’t good results for back surgeries), so after a lot of prayer, and that morning he was all prepped for surgery, God allowed the x-ray machine to break.  God cancelled his surgery!  So the next plan was/is for Edwin and Anita to head to El Paso, TX and have daily appointments with a chiropractor.  Edwin and Anita don’t know English, so as a part of a team decision, I was selected to bring them to Texas and because they already have visas to the states it was an easy decision for us all to make.  We have plans of being in El Paso for two weeks, and then returning to Mexico.  I’m helping them out with translating for all the doctor’s appointments and in general living down here.  Their three teen boys stayed in Mexico with one of the other staff families (the Grangers) at the Ranch, and then next week some teachers will go out to the Ranch and stay with them.  Then we shall all be reunited after that.  These appointments have already helped Edwin out so much already in just 4 days.

Please be praying for Edwin & Anita while we are here in El Paso, and for me as I’m constantly translating.  God has given me constant reminders of what it means to be on a missionary team and why we work in teams.
Here is a picture of me with Edwin & Anita.

I’m excited to be able to spend another Christmas at home with my parents & siblings!  If you will be in the Baker City, Oregon area between Dec. 19-Jan. 2, let me know and we can hang out! :)

Blessings to you and your family during this holiday season,
Crystal Pierce

Merry Christmas

Kylee and the manger

I wish I could freeze this moment. All is quiet; I am sitting in front of the fireplace by the Christmas tree; the snow is falling outside. My girls are getting ready for family pictures and then a Christmas Eve service where we will reflect on God’s gift to mankind through His Son Jesus. Meanwhile half a world away in a hot and sticky climate, I know there is a get-together planned in the Patpatar tribe among the believers. One of the Bible teachers has been preparing a message to share about the birth of Christ.

Being out of the country for so long I had forgotten the crowds and commercialism that surrounds the Christmas season here in the States. I had forgotten how much tradition and fanciful tales were elevated and how the true Christmas story was demoted and despised. So in a world where the gifts have replaced the Gift and Father Christmas has more influence than the Father of Christmas, it is nice to pause in the quietness of this moment to consider what the multitudes of heavenly hosts were praising God about and join them in their song.

May you and yours enjoy some tradition and have fun, but most of all may you “see the thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about” and may you “spread the word concerning what had been told [us] about his child.” (Luke 2:15,17)

Merry Christmas!

Aaron

A Buyer’s Market….

Posted by Josh and Mandi Brower on Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Good morning!

We wanted to write bring you up to speed on a major Praise with us, if you haven’t heard already–

When we first considered moving down here to Florida, we realized that we would need to almost double our support because the cost of living, specifically housing, was so expensive compared to Michigan. With the economic troubles of the past few years, the housing market in Florida has become a major “buyer’s market,” and we realized about a year ago that we would not need to raise as much support as we originally thought, because we would be able to get housing much cheaper—

To make a long story short, we have been looking for housing the past couple months, and have found that it will be much more efficient to buy a house, than to rent—With the Lord’s provision, we have enough for a down payment, and are supposed to be closing on Monday (Dec 10).

You can see a photo of the front of the house at the top of this post….

We just would ask that you pray for us over the next month—For wisdom and strength as we come to the end of this process, and get ready to move in the end of December….

Thank you for your continued support and prayers–

In His Love,

Josh & Mandi (& the kids!)

Christmas in the Country 2012

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Sunday, November 25th, 2012

Where were we earlier tonight? At Christmas in the Country, of course!

logo for Christmas in the Country

This was our second time going. We had a blast!

The girls (and Jason) all got to ride in a little atv-drawn train. And we all went on a horse drawn wagon. We saw geese, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens. Even alpacas.

And we got to hold baby rabbits.

But the best part was likely getting our photos with… nope, not Santa Claus (that line up was too long) … but with Vixon.

“Benjamin of the family”

Posted by Elijah and Moira Hall on Monday, November 5th, 2012

Benjamin is 11 months old now and although he may be the youngest, he isn't far behind the rest!

Ever since the birth of our fifth child, people ranging from friends to complete strangers have greeted the baby and, upon learning his name is Benjamin, made comments such as:

“Oh, so he’s the last.” (Our thought: well, it is our fifth…I guess a lot of people are thinking that).

“Benjamin! It’s a great name for a fifth baby.” (Well, we thought so!)

“Ah, the Benjamin of the family! So you’re done having kids now…”

People are generally surprised when I tell them we’d like to have more. But I thought the astonishment was all because of the number until someone at last said to me: “Well, why did you name him Benjamin then?”

THAT comment astounded me! So I asked my language helper about it at home and she began to laugh. “It’s a saying we have here in Paraguay,” she said. “The ‘Benjamin’ is the last child in the family because Jacob’s last son was named Benjamin in the Bible…so everyone just KNEW that you were making a statement that this would be your last child! No wonder they’re so surprised when you say it won’t be.”

So I’m enlightened now, and I have a fresh appreciation of how subtle the differences between cultures can be! My friends speak Spanish and so do I, and we had thought we were communicating well, but without the same shared cultural background I had been totally missing the point. This incident and many others have made me very thankful for the training we received, teaching us how to observe and investigate the way a different people group thinks and the things they share in common…it’s not just this tidbit, but hundreds and thousands of different sayings, different ways of seeing the world, and other methods of interpreting everyday happenings. That all adds up and can make all the difference of whether people understand us or not!

Now when people comment to me, I reply – “Yes, his name is Benjamin, but he won’t be the ‘Benjamin of the family.’ I’d like to have more kids!”

Camping Anyone?

Posted by Jason and Angie Bechtel on Friday, September 28th, 2012

This past weekend we were able to head a bit north for some extended family time. We stayed at Miller’s Family Campground with Jason’s dad, brother and sister-in-law. It rained on and off all weekend and it was quite cold, but we weren’t bothered by any of that. Thankfully we’d had the foresight to book two little cabins, which had cold running water, but best of all, they had wood stoves! We were toasty and dry all weekend! :) It did stop raining enough for us to enjoy some walks and a little trip into Tobermory. The girls were pretty disappointed that they couldn’t go swimming in Miller Lake, but they seemed to enjoy themselves despite that fact! :)

Here are a few pictures of the older girls (the youngest was napping at the time) taken by our wonderful sister-in-law:

You can see our little cabins in the background.

The view from our cabins.

Sisterly Love.

Even Lexi joined in the fun!
