We took two trips to visit churches during the last few days of December. Both were very different experiences. Turtle Mountain Church is about 3 hours away up past Hot (pronounced with a high and falling tone) in the hills around Turtle Mountain Lake. This church needs encouragement. They’ve lost nearly 80% of their members just in the last year. We went up to visit them and just spent time talking with them and encouraging them in the Lord. They were blown away by the progress we’ve made in language in the year we haven’t seen them and we were blown away by how their congregation had shrunk (though we tried not to show it). Check out more pictures here.
Goat Village Church, on the other hand, saw 1,500 Lawa people gathered to fellowship, celebrate their history and to show their cultural pride. Rather than feel as though we needed to encourage these believers we ourselves felt blessed and honored to be there. It was fun to watch them act out their history including the arrival of missionaries from New Tribes Mission to tell their people the Good News about Jesus. I have created a folder of the 28 best pictures from the experience with extensive captions that tell an interesting story. Check them out here.

What do Elijah and the widow of Zarephath have to do with tribal missions? The answer might surprise you. Tomorrow I will have the opportunity to talk about it at Sunnybrook Community Church.
One of the things I intend to communicate is that God has a heart for the unreached people of the world. This was in fact the driving force behind a week of meetings that I had in Florida earlier this month. I had the opportunity to meet with Culture and Language Consultants that are working in countries all over the world who have a heart to see churches planted in remote areas. Working with unreached people groups and being able to understand their culture and communicate clearly is vitally important. As consultants who give guidance to missionaries all over the world, it was our desire to compile our resources and fine-tune our tools to be able to be more effective.
Right now in the Patpatar there is another difficulty with communication. One of the Bible teachers is quite sick and another one is away. Pray with us for them that they will recover and get back soon and that the task left to the others of communicating the truth of God’s Word will be accomplished.
For those of you in the Sioux City area without commitments to a church service tomorrow, I would like to invite you to either the 9:00 or the 10:45 service at Sunnybrook. For those who cannot make it I believe that it will be available online during those times and then later on in the week at http://sunnybrookchurch.org.

The biggest joy and privilege that we have is to interact with our Thai church and to encourage our Thai friends. It’s a great honor to be just 27 years old and be able to share God’s Word with our church! This Sunday I shared James 1:1-5, in particular about where to find wisdom and what God promises He will do if we ask for it. Afterward I asked several people for their feedback and got some helpful responses and I hope to improve for next time. The important thing is that in getting outside my comfort zone I’ve opened doors for people to speak into my life and that it’s another opportunity to learn more about myself.

Hey, take a few seconds to check out our very latest newsletter. It’s short, sweet and to the point with plenty of pictures. It has some succinct statements about why we live in Thailand and what we’ve been doing since we got back. Thanks for taking time to read it! If you’d like to download the actual file you can grab it in our dropbox here.

The local church that we are a part of here in Asuncion, Iglesia Renuevo, celebrated their 9 year anniversary and 2nd Annual Missions Conference this month! It’s a joy to be a part of a local fellowship of believers and to serve them by helping set into motion their own missions movement.
Mike had the honor of interviewing the visiting missionaries during the Conference. In the above photo Mike is with Ronald, a Bolivian missionary married to a Paraguayan and planning to serve on a full-time basis among the tribal groups of Paraguay! It’s a joy to see young couples pioneering missions in Paraguay!

We were invited to participate in a Missions Conference of a local church that is very proactive in ministry. Mike taught a practical class on identifying and partnering with ministries using the “things God has put in your hands.” The church planting movements in Paraguay are often perceived as “unattainable” due to having foreign origins and it’s financial backing. That is why it’s necessary for the Paraguayan cross-cultural mission’s movement to take on a sustainable form and strategy.
It was a highlight for us during the Missions Conference to watch coworkers who are Bible Translators among the Sanapana people, sharing about their ministry and interact with the members of this church! They were a tremendous blessing to the church and to us as they talked about the challenges they face in the task of making God’s Word accurate in the Sanapana language and yet understandable. We were overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task and their commitment to see it through.

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. Acts 20:24

This has been an exciting month for Mike in ministry with the invitation by two different rural church associations asking him to provide teaching and training for their outreach programs.
In both cases, the Guarani language has been the primary communication tool. Paraguayans are generally bilingual, speaking both Spanish and Guarani. This creates many complexities in evangelism and discipleship for the Paraguayans and thus the importance for practical equipping at the church level.
